Finally got my chance to see the Boris/Melvins show tonight. I've seen the Melvins many times, but it was my first time to see Boris. Dayum, that was a show. The closer for both of the headlining acts was entirely appropriate, and both were amazing.
In the world of gear, I bought a Stylophone Gen X-1. At $75 or so, it's gotta be the cheapest way to some nasty, spacey synth bass notes.

Bordering more on the "mid-tempo death" side than the stoner/doom, man these guys just killed it on this album and I missed it upon release. Riffs everywhere.
I hear these guys hyped all over the HM-2 focused boards/threads I occasionally frequent. Do they stand up to the hype? With my series of cursory listens, I've found them to be a "polished" and maybe more sophisticated (if that makes sense) version of old school Swedish death metal like Entombed. Maybe a generic version of that? Which is not what I look for in that style, though I can't fault them for what they put out. It's all solid, just not catching my ears these days. I guess I prefer stuff that may be a little rougher around the edges (not talking distortion here) with character, and not as tightly produced?
I don't know what I'm saying here, or if it makes any sense at this point. Maybe I should stop typing, or maybe I'll blame the medical procedure (nothing big to worry about, thankfully!) I went through earlier this morning. Thanks for entertaining my ramblings, regardless.
Nah I know what ya mean. I'm still getting into death metal and don't know much, but I think I can kinda follow what you're getting at.

Got to play today for a bit, and went all out with my "B" board getting similar dirt tones from different pedals from my "A" board. So now I have Pork Loin/Green Rhino, MBD2/B3K, Volt Thrower/Tremond, and Pharaoh Supreme/Swollen Pickle. None are identical in tone, but all get the job done. Feeling good, and am now debating how to best thin the herd of extra pedals. I've had some listed locally for a while, but am getting few bites, and while my goal this entire year has been to get rid of excess gear, I haven't been incredibly successful, even if I HAVE slowed the accumulation of new stuff considerably. Regardless, I was happy to play today, and am seriously looking at finally upgrading the preamp in one of my basses like I've been planning to do for a while now.

An actual bass question. I've got an SX short scale P bass, that I brought out for a break from my SS J-mutt. Both are strung with Chromes (I'm pretty sure the same size). The P sounds way more bright and zingy than the J. Now, I'm pretty sure both are alder bodies, I know both have maple/maple necks. The question is would a change of the pickup to something with a different character get me more in to the bassier side of things? I don't know offhand what pickup is in it, I know it's not the original. I'll need to take it out to see if there are any identifying marks or scars on it to ID the thing.
I'd say yeah a different p pickup can change the character alot. I'm a fan of the emg geezer bottlers. Often overlooked is pickup height too. Being too close to the strings can make them really bright.
Now for my weekly update. I got my custom pickguard in amd routed my bass vi for himbucker sized pickups. Mounted a bare knuckles Stockholm p90 in the bridge position. Lookin pretty good I think.

I'm also finally getting the finish applied to the new pedalboards. The oil based urethane amperes the birch reqlly nicely and the walnut dowels look really nice. I think it's turning out pretty good.
When you play them both unplugged do they have a similar tone? If so, the pickup upgrade might be the way to go here. The Geezer Butler pickups as mentioned above would be good. However, if you are feeling super adventurous, a Guild Bi-Sonic would make for something really interesting in that short scale.
I actually thought about a G&L MFD 'bucker as well.
That looks fun. I don't about 'dark' pickups, but as far as direct swap options go, you cannot beat the G&L MFD's, they were 80 bucks last I checked. Other than that, I like DiMarzio's.
If you're thinking about routing out a big hole for something bigger, obvious choices for thump might include a Guild or Novak Bisonic, DiMarzio DP120/145, or somebody's discards off an EB-0 or whatever, the possibilities are endless. I like putting odd ball pickups in cheapo/beater basses and rocking them out. Every now and then I stray and end up with some foo foo coffee table potato bass in my hands, that cost too much and didn't really bring anything to new to the table. Very easy on the eyes though.

Agreed on the throwing oddball pups in a bass and rocking it. I need to stop dragging my feet and get an mfd too. Oh and to add more options to the list, Reverend started selling their bass pups on their website.

I've always dug DiMarzios. Usually on the cheaper side when it comes to quality pups, and they always sound great to my ears. Also for Kaa- are the strings on the pbass way newer? Seems odd to me a pbass would be brighter than a jazz...
No, the strings on the P are actually lots older than the J. The J has DiMarzios wired in series, so they act like one big humbucker with coils that are 3 inches apart. That may be a reason I'm hearing that. I played both last night, and they aren't that much different, now that I'm really focusing on the toanz. The DiMarzios are a good bit louder than the unknown P pickup, I will say. I'll most likely leave everything as is, since I have a new car t pay off since I smashed up my old one. Gotta pinch those pennies, doncha know.
