Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

I can't realistically fathom how you ever made a .105 work tuned to A. I'm not going to say you didn't, I just can't comprehend it :P

My Circle Ks came in the other day. The .136 does not seem that big, I should have no problems playing finger style on it.

Drop B ;). And it seemed fine at home. The jam last night proved otherwise. The bigger I go the more flabby it sounds. And it's not a thing I can seem to fix with EQ. First set I had on it was .135 .95 .75 .55 GHS and that was too big. So I got the daddarios .050, .067, .090, .120 after that and for sure the B dead and worthless after 1 show. Think tonight, on top of taking a 115 instead of my 810, I'm going to take a different bass all together.

Still no email response from the dude that took off with my stuff. I sent the email to his business address, of which he is the sole employee and owner. So, that makes me think that my gear is long gone and he doesn't have the balls to tell me. He could at least fess up to robbing his former friend... what a dick.

As for tone quests and stuff. Priciest thing I've bought was the dually by miles. Nicest bass I owned was a Japanese made mustang bass, and I didn't pay for it. Some dude left a bunch of brass instruments at my parents house for a charity thing that never happened and he disappeared so I took one vintage cornet to a pawn shop and traded it for the mustang.

I'm under the belief that the cabs the biggest part, because I hate speaker fart/distortion, so once that's gone, I'm good. I use squier basses, danelectro pedals and amps are whatever I find cheap and interesting.

I'd like a blue beard or clone of one someday I think.

yeah.. i dont really have that much spare cash either. My gear fund has paid for itself mostly. I used to buy and fix up instruments and gear and resell it or flip things from craigslist. I hussled for a few years and saved up some dough. Now I just buy what I like and make sure I can sell it for about what I paid for it. One year I spent twelve grand on gear, but I also sold ten and a half grand in gear, so it really only cost me about 1500. ..

Call him, also how long ago did this occur?

I think I screwed up by buying the Orange Terror 500. It is way too loud for home use. It doesn't seem to open up/sound right till I play it about 9 o'clock which is too loud when anyone else is in the house. I have to play at like 7:30 to 8 and then it is too restrained like doesn't sound right. I hate to sell it but think I am going to and find a lower watt all tube amp that will also sound decent on guitar or go with a guitar tube amp that sound decent on bass.

You need to look for something very low wattage. 2 watts max. Something like the Blackheart Killer Ant.

Seriously, VHT Special 6. I got mine for $125 or something like that.

I used to have a Fender Champ but that seemed like it clipped from a bass input for some reason. I also had a Traynor YBA 200 that seemed so underpowered I could turn that bugger up half way through my 610(4X10 with a 2x10 over it) in my house and get away with it. So I thought maybe I could get the Carvin X100B that has the built in attenuator 100/50/25 watt and that the 25 watt would be good for bass. I guess I thought I needed more watts for bass to keep clean enough to use my pedals not really needing tube distortion, but seems like a few of you have guitar micro tube amps that do well on bass.

Spoke too soon, got an email back - He says gave the Sunn head to someone else who has since died. WHY THE shag WOULDN'T HE TRY TO GIVE IT BACK TO ME?!

What a slimy f*cking sh*tbag.

shag, that pisses me off. I'd be less pissed if he'd sold it for drug money than for him to give it away to somebody else. Should have just left it alone.

i missed this, what happened exactly?

6-7 years ago I was in a band with this guy, we were friends all through high school and after. I had a bunch of gear (Sunn Sentura, Fender 2x12 a few vintage pedals, some drum stuff) at his sister's place where we were having band practice. Suddenly dude up and disappears. No one knew what happened to him, not even his girlfriend. His parents said they knew where he was but wouldn't give me contact info. Tried for a few years to track him down to no avail. Earlier this week DMN was talking about picking up a Sentura and it reminded how much I want my amp back. So I did some more googling and was able to find the website for his business. Sent him an email a few days ago and just heard back now. Lost most of the stuff - GAVE AWAY THE SUNN HEAD TO SOMEONE ELSE.

We were great friends, there was no bad blood, no reason to rip me off, no reason to move away and not tell anyone. The whole thing is just baffling and infuriating.
