Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

pretty productive jam week, got two whole days of practice in and tried out a new vocalist, also loaded the peavey cab with my kappalites and it sounds awesome so i did a little recording of my band Eternal Dogmother durning our session today and it turned out pretty nice, this is a new song we just finished up, it currently has no name. hondo pro II/supercollider fuzz/bassman 1200 pro/ peavey loaded with kappalite 3015 (non LF)

I'm on both sides of eyeball's point.
The $100 hondo I picked up sounded better than my $2000 p-bass. So much so I sold the p-bass. Granted the p-bass was more comfortable and cooler. So it was a tone > all situation. That being said I'd love to throw the P pickup from the hondo into a more comfortable to play p-bass style bass down the line.
My sunn 1200s beat out a lot of heads that cost a lot more $ than the 1200s ran me. However, I'm super happy with my dunwich pre. The sunn was like 90% of what I would want from an amp. The dunwich pre gets me to like 98%. And that's only because the tone quest is never ending.
But dunwich + power amp still cost me less than a vintage svt would have. And then I would have still needed more power.

Got a pair of Technics speakers from the local thrift store (top set). Not much low end, but they sound alright with a sub. Might use em with the TV. Also found some Polk 5.5" bookshelf speakers there that sound great. Need to get my stereo tube amp up and running for some vinyl listening nights. Still, nice to relax and listen on some different speakers.

Got my gig rig set up in my ex dining room now personal practice space. Super glue worked great on tolex repairs. It's set up now so the bottom two cabs run clean and the top two get the Rat King, I have the cabs turned in about 20 degrees for dispersion.

I am continually wanting to build a Warmoth, but even for a basic build the $ far outweighs my skill/need/budget

Unknown probably squier neck with standard p width. I was told it was a mighty mite but either way I don't care cause it's hella broke in and feels great

Total cost in that bass as it's sits is under $300. At times it has been "worth more" but it's current state it's the cheapest parts it's ever had while together.
The white p is a mim jazz special neck with a mij/mik body, PAF model P. That one is around $300-400 with the most expensive part being the custom pickguard ;(

I never associate price with how good an amp sounds. There are amps in all price ranges that sound good. I'll spend money on an amp for quality of build and components as well as the "cool" factor. Is it worth it? Probably not and if I needed money the first thing i would sell would likely be my Matamp. Amps I find all end up sounding the same once you're in a band mix, I think for bass in a loud band the most important things are does the amp provide the headroom you want and the volume you need. The subtleties of the tone will just get buried by guitars and drums anyway. All of this is even more true with clean bass tones. If you're using your amp to create distirtion then I think you can justify being more picky but not much more. At the end of the day amps aren't that impirtant to tone as they are with guitars. I find cabs will affect your sound more I don't think enough people realize that.

I love that line of Polks, I got a pair from that series. My audiophile buddy had his house full of them after he heard my pair. Parts Express makes replacements for the small drivers if the magnets drop on them(common problem with those drivers in that series). I got hit in a thunderstorm and it fried the small drivers and Parts Express saved the day for cheap.
