Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Gotcha. Sounds like you have a bit of a middle-mids scoop. Where is your enhance knob?
A suggestion for bass dirt: When playing with guitars it will sound cleaner than solo. Use more dirt than you think you need when listening solo.

I usually kept the enhance knob at around 8 or 9 o' clock. Not a huge fan of the overly scooped sound. Also the tweeter was barely turned up. All part of the learning curve I guess.

Welcome Mike.
I used to own a WT550 too and loved the tone but sold it and joined the dark side (SVT/810)
BTW Fister are a great band.I ordered a tape from them a while ago and it did't show up. When I asked about it they sent me what I originally order plus a bunch of free stuff to make up for it.
How do you like the EB4? I've been wondering about them sense they came out.

The WT550 has probably my favorite pre-amp and most certainly my all time favorite EQ section. I have always been super bummed that the Eden WTDI did not have the same semi parametric. I would own one if I it did. I also tried the Empress ParaEq thinking it might be similar but it really didn't do much for me. The Q switches were cool though.

Kenny from Fister (Bass/vocals) is actually the older brother of one of my close buddies. Super cool dude who makes me come close to pissing myself with laughter near every time I talk to him. His younger brother and the guitar player from Bong Threat are in a folk band called Indian Blanket that are actually really pretty awesome. Indian Blanket did a split with fellow STL doom band The Lion's Daughter, called A Black Sea, that I honestly believe is one of the coolest albums that I heard in 2013. Who would have thought folk and doom would congeal into such an awesome album. I am not sure about the links to that one, but it is on spotify.

I love the EB4. I have not experienced the "chorus effect" that many others have but that may be because it is tuned Bb-F-Bb-Eb. Plays great, sounds killer and weighs 7.5lbs. I was unsure of the gold when I bought it here on TB but it has grown on me and now it is my favorite of the color choices for this model. I also really dig that Gibson got away from mahogany for this model and went with a classic swamp ash maple/RW combo.

Yay for lurkers! Welcome and enjoy your stay. Do you have any link to your band's material?

"Tooth and Claw" on the reverbnation page is my favorite tune that we do.

Damn excitement grew and dashed.

This guy who I know has a classic 400 hit me up via craigslist and we talked over the phone for once. Damn the guy seems nice but he's delusional about prices.

Told me a pawn shop with bad power blew up his classic 400 so they had it fixed, then he runs it with four original tubes and 4 new tubes, even though he has a new set of 8 matched tubes he thinks it's cool to run with half old and have new and suggested I do the same and hinted it's worth around $900...

Idk if he truly thinks that stuff, or he thinks I'm that dumb?

Fuccc what did you create a time machine? How the hell are you drinking at a bar so cheap? Are they like old man bars(NEPA slang for corner bars where functional alcoholics hang out) or clubs?

No, it is totally a mid 20's to 30's crowd in there. Actually one of my favorite venues to play, as they do a ton of loud music. Packed almost ever friday and saturday night, even in the summer. (Around here everyone is usually at the lakes on the weekends in the summer.)

There are not a lot of 400 watt tube amps out there. If he can get that price for it, good for him.

0 is a lot less than 00.

I thought you said they were like $500?

I didn't tell him no, I just said I'd think. I just swear they were supposed to be less and his sounded like it had been through some hard times.

Edit: He offered it to me for $700 before and someone told me it was too much. That's what it was.

They can be, if the amp has no tubes and is beat up a bit. I wouldnt be sad if he got a lot of money for it. Increases the value of my amp.

$700 for a 2-channel 400W tube amp is a good deal in my book. Especially if he's got an extra full set of power tubes - that's a few hundred bucks right there.

I hear it sold for $1200 :D

Hmm he's an older guy, he's got like 200+ pieces of gear as in heads and cabs at his home, a lot of it peavey. The problem for me is he lives like way on the other end of dfw, and doesn't have texting or know how to email pictures and seems to selectively ignore questions so the few times he's managed to send me a good description they were then priced out of my comfort zone and not worth driving 80 miles round trip to even see it.

Sounds like a guy telling his nosey wife, yeah, yeah, I know Babe, I listed them on Craigslist but all I am getting is lowballed and I am not going to give these away. Then he goes in the music room and tells his babies, don't listen to what she says, she will never break our bond LOL.

Originally it was not that set of tubes offered, it was a mixed bag of 8 at varying stages of life. Now it's two unmatched quads with a major age discrepancy or a matched set of 8 where 4 have never been used or tested.

It's really the fact the thing blew up the concerns me, I know he said it's fixed, but that's a lot of potential pricey problems so not worth it to me in addition to the potential need to retube it.

A glimpse at the future Max?

I assume (hope) the dudes got money and just has no rush to sell his stuff. Otherwise he's kinda making it hard on himself. He saturates the market with ads with no pictures few details and a crazy prices like $350 firm for a peavey 1x15. Then anyone else can sell at a normal asking price with a picture and get it gone.
