Seriously though, churches spend ridiculous amounts of money on **** that I'd never imagine going into a church. Strobe lights, colored lights, fog machines, top-dollar mixers and PA systems, broadcast-grade video equipment, video walls, you name it. A significant portion of my company's customers are houses of worship. The donations pour in, and a lot of that money is spent on flashy bullsh*t.

Like Joel Olsteen's church? The electric bill for this place alone could feed a lot of homeless.

LOL. The girlfriend's father plays gospel in his church. And the guitar player who is a cool old school country player, got told by the church inner circle to get rid of his vintage twin reverb because it doesn't look pristine enough. I was at the Mom and Pop's guitar store with her Dad and he was trying to get a $150 solid state combo in trade for it. I said no FN way I will find him something and buy it and sell it back if he wants it back, that's some BS. He has a cool vintage Jazzmaster that he plays too. I think he was like Joe is right I have a sweet amp and the church wants me to play then that's what I am playing out of. FN snakes in the grass.

You have no idea what a problem churches are for a recording studio. The biggest deadbeat clients we had at both studios I worked at were churches. They would ring up a 5 or 6K bill and then show up with like $800 and some sob story. They would always claim that they would have the money next week and then they would dodge you. This would happen with literally 80% of the churches we worked with. Then the effed up part is they would try and guilt you. I am sitting there thinking I am not the one who agreed to pay all this money when I knew I didn't have it. It was insane and you couldn't refuse their business because that other 20% were model clients. Also, this was a small town and it was the norm to work with people on price to make sure they could get their projects done, but the churches were the worst because they would just lie to you about how they already had the money and it was no trouble at all rather than telling us what they had and what they wanted to do so we could figure out how to make it work.

When I was a younger lad, I played in churches,and went to work as an auto mechanic for one of my fellow congregants and band mates. To date, they set the low bar for out and out weaselry when it came to quoting jobs, sourcing and charging for parts, and any kind of customer perqs. Just insane. But they were the first ones to shout how "religious" the business was. Told us to hold our paychecks, then show up the next day with a new van? Um, yeah, no.

Have you heard of or been to Muligans? Good venue for this kind of music in GR. Would be an easy split with a third band. Gives you a little longer set to play, instead of cramming 5 band in to 4 hours.

What normal ATM has a $10 fee? My bank reimburses me for fees charged for using an ATM not owned by them. Not sure why you're not understanding this.

Lots of them. They are not bank ATM's. Third party, that suck ass, but are in places like bars and liquor stores. I refuse to use them, but a lot of people are dumb enough to do so.

When we first started selling merch I would just go get change from the bank for that night and then make sure I pay myself back at the end of the night. Same if I booked the show and have to run cover myself. Now that we've got a solid band kitty going, I just normally leave some change in the merch tub for shows.

Oh and as far as physically selling the merch at shows, I usually try to hang out kind of near the table, but figure if anyone there wants to buy merch before we actually play, it's because they already know us and know to come ask me. Normally I'll have our singer go to the table as soon as our set is over in case someone wants to buy something, then I take over after I've loaded off stage since I'm band dad/manager/boss/kindergarten teacher. If it's a big night like we're opening for a big band or doing a CD release, I normally try to get a cute female friend to do it because people buy more stuff that way lol.

Yeah, I think maybe next time I'll ask my guitarist's girlfriend to operate the merch booth.

I usually carry zero cash on me on a daily basis. If I am going to a show where I know I am likely to buy merchandise, I have cash. Some people are not as prepared though.

I try to have cash for shows. I don't always, though, because, like yourself, I often don't carry any and sometimes forget to take some out.

All you bastards have smart phones. I was thinking of getting one of those credit card readers for craigslist sales. You guys ever consider one?

Per my outings to the bar. When I actually go out to drink, it is a $10 night. That covers a big ass shot of Jack($3), a 60 oz pitcher ($4), and tip.

On craigslist, all those shagers going "I have $150, but it's in CASH!!!!!!1" always make me want to say "Yes, I know it's in cash, this is craigslist, you shaging moron, stop saying cash like it's supposed to impress me."

Something important to know about those Square credit card readers for smart phones. The fees are about the same as PayPal fees if you swipe a card. If you manually enter the information (say, over the phone purchase) they're something like twice as much or more.

Wisconsin small towns usually have more bars than churches, the UW serves beer at the Student Union (even brews its own), I can think of a dozen bars within walking distance of my house, 3 of those are microbreweries. There's over a dozen microbreweries in town total (300k people), I can't even count the number of microbreweries in the state. The liquor store at the neighborhood grocery store is the size of an entire small grocery store. I love Wisconsin.

This guy who I know has a classic 400 hit me up via craigslist and we talked over the phone for once. Damn the guy seems nice but he's delusional about prices.

Told me a pawn shop with bad power blew up his classic 400 so they had it fixed, then he runs it with four original tubes and 4 new tubes, even though he has a new set of 8 matched tubes he thinks it's cool to run with half old and have new and suggested I do the same and hinted it's worth around $900...

I've heard from people who work restaurants that often church groups are the worst tippers, too. They think they're owed special treatment because they got the jesus.
