I guess I have a thing for single pup passive basses. The active preamp in my L2000 was giving me fits. I figured out what was wrong after I ripped it all out. I decided to hook up a single volume control just to mess around and it sounds dangerous!!! Strangely enough almost any pedal sounds great with this bass (and headphones). Maybe I've been using the wrong bass for dirt for all of these years.
Now what do I do with a spare MFD?

Once you remove them they become highly toxic. You can go ahead and send that to me, for proper disposal. I have experience in these dangerous matters.

I would leave it in for visual continuity and maybe just leave it unwired. A bass with open holes would trigger my OCD like crazy. Same for me with stickered basses.

I have toyed with the idea of doing the same with my sb2 and making it an sb1 with a single coil thumb rest. Sometimes I like to roll that single up though and get some jazz bass grind.

Side note about my sb2. When I got the bass, the pots were all kinds of scratchy. I could have cleaned them but I like to solder and decided to replace them. Now I looked long and hard at the old wiring job before I cut anything. I mean it's a super simple circuit. Somehow despite the fact that it appears to be wired identically, my neck volume is a master and bridge volume only works when the neck is on. Not a big issue because I would never solo the bridge but I was quite perplexed. Probably a simple biff. Any ideas?

You're completely on the other side of the US. If you were any kind of responsible you'd know they should come to a safe midway point like Texas.

Head and cab score?

Yep, $700. The cab looks to have never been opened, and it's at 8 ohms, so I'm guessing the D140s (I'm assuming here, I haven't opened the back yet, thing is REALLY on there, but as you can see the aluminum dust caps are there) are 16 ohm versions. And if they are the OG D140s, that means I now have very iteration of the JBL 140, D,K, & E. The head recently smoked some apparently and won't turn on. I'm guessing it's the valves (two are the same type of Tung-Sols in my other 2000s, so they very well might be original), and the fuse. At worst, it's the transformer, which is like $300 for a rewind. Even if it IS the transformer (fingers crossed it isn't), with work needed for it I'm looking at maybe like $1200 total into the purchase, which, for an original matched 2000s and cab in decent condition, I'm totally okay with.

Pull it off and tell us what new sunn smells/tastes like.

THAT WOULD LET THE MAGIC OUT! But in all seriousness, I showed it to my housemate, and the first thing he does is start to peel it. I slapped his hand away and asked what the F was wrong with him, he was like "Oh, yeah, sorry, I just sort of...". He was just totally absent minded about it. Some people!

BTW Sunn thread, you own 1200s head also, don't you? How is it different than 2000s? Can it get much louder and dirtier?

Indeed, I do have a 1200s. The 1000s series of amplifiers are all very similar. They all sport the same output section, 4x6550s (originally KT88s, but they switched in 1968 I believe as the KT88s were getting more expensive to import from England, if I remember correctly) producing 120w (150w when they switched from 5AR4/GZ34 to SS rectifiers). The only differences were EQ points in the Bass vs. Guitar intended versions (or so I've heard, I don't know enough about the internals to look and determine that by myself), and, of course, the reverb and trem. The 1200s I have is a bit louder than 2000s #1, which I believe is a combination of the SS rectification and that the 2000s could probably do with a new set of tubes. As far as dirty...they're all Sunns, and they'll all stay clean to ungodly volumes (there's a story about Hendrix and Sunn having some beef over distortion, it's rather funny).

Or find an original L-1000 from the late 70's early 80's. They had the single pickup in the p-bass spot. Passive electronics. Had one for awhile, sounded awesome, got replaced by my 78 fender Pbass. Which got replaced by my 77 Aria Pbass with the OG dimarzio in it.

Oh See Demon into that Acoustic 140 I picked. believe the hype of those old Acoustics, that thing smokes my SVT IIIPro. single ported 15" cab tho, no boners here. that is one of those old Peavey tube hybrid guitar amps tho

Yep, I'm familiar with the theory. I'm asking coz I used to have Sonaro but only Sceptre stayed with me. Of course lots of people say Sunn are in general similar sounding amps, but for me there are lots of differences between these two (to make it simply - Sunn 2xKT88 bass amp and Sunn 2xKT88 guitar amp). And to be honest, both of them can't get loud and stay clean - Sceptre can be almost as loud as my 2000s, but it's super fuzzy, thick but kind of squiashy and eats attack, while Sonaro get just a little bit of dirt and stay solid, open and very accurate, but it's rather a quiet amp. I'm talking about cranking them up to 7 or more - guys at Sunn forum don't do that so can't tell me what I want to know. So I wonder if it's the same difference between 2000s and 1200s/1000s. If so, I definately need 1200s/1000s to destroy evil in my country.

BTW. My 2000s was tube rectified but I changed it to SS rect. Difference in volume and sound is barely noticeable. My tech made for me some black magic device to plug it in the rectifier tube socket, so I can put tubes back in any moment.Anyway if you're thinking about the same operation - I recommend it. From what I've heard in your videos you don't play with lots of super beefy low end, so a little less thickness and some more tightness instead might make 2000s even better.

What's that, a UK made Mullard in the preamp? Yes please.

Guess I picked up another oddity. In 1971 (pretty sure) they changed the 2000s to the 350B, but this one is a 2000s, clearly tested in April, 1972.

Guess it was in New Jersey at some point.

Interesting, turns out at some point they switched the front plate from Portland to Tualatin, though I don't believe there was ever an actual move of the factory (Conrad still lives in Tualatin).

Hey is it a good idea to put them on either side of the bass stack? The dually will be under the bassic in the middle. Then I'll just stack the guitar amp on too of the bass stack. How my room is setup they would disperse better across the room
