The Combo Club

@KaraQ @StatesideRambler @iagtrplyr totally get what your saying! The strap locks are just the way you’ve always done it. Most guitar players I know use them. It’s become the norm and you wouldn’t do it any other way. It would feel just as wrong to you without them as they do to me with them. I get that. I can see the convenience of being able to switch from guitar to guitar with the same strap easily too. To each his own. Their not for me. Whatever works!

@iagtrplyr I think that Marcus Miller combo could be great for your new tele! Like @G-Dog said bass amps can be great for 6 string guitars. Big full sound. But I think a good guitar centered pedal or two would be good. Let us know.

Yes at @Morrighan ALWAYS loop my cable through the top amp handle. Doesn’t everyone lol.
How did the session go? Did they notice you and your short scale?!

It’s true right @G-Dog and @iagtrplyr acoustic guitars are especially unique I think. You can build the same model guitar by the same manufacturer with the same top, sides, back and neck and each one will have its own unique sound. I think electric guitars and basses are different. They are all “individuals” but not as much as acoustics.

We all notice each other's instruments, natch. 'Fessed up at the start of class. Looks like the DI from my combo, and the DAW, are now permanently part of my practice space.

42.5 year old strap I love it @Morrighan ! I got ya beat by a little. this strap is 45 years old. Bought it for my 1st bass guitar a Ventura copy P-Bass.

That’s me in 1985 with it.

View attachment 4471044

That’s it today. I had to retire it.
Straps are so much better now!
I think most things are. I think we tend to look back fondly on things that perhaps we’re not as great as we remembered them.
I have 2 LEVY padded straps one 3.5” and one 4” that my shoulders thank me for everyday. Lol
My first strap is 45-46 years old, don’t recall exactly when I bought it. Not at home so no photo, but it was barely long enough for guitar, too short for bass since I don’t wear mine like Timbuk3’s bass player. Kind of a hippie weave pattern.

I LOVE the rich full sound of my guitars thru a bass amp! My Rumble Studio, like your Stage, has some very guitar-ish effects on it, too!

I'm with you, Michael. Those rubber washer blocks work for me! :smug:

Yeah, ya just gotta have lotsa effects for guitar. Love my Fender Cyber-Deluxe.

All my guitars feel very personal, but the acoustics really resonate with me, in more ways than one. ;)

Ya might try a new Fender Mustang GTX modeler, Iago. After all, it's the guitar version of your Rumble Stage bass modeling amp. Even uses the same Fender Tone App on your phone or tablet to control it..

Guitars! Guitars! Guitars! Sheesh! All you guys oughta get a room ... ... over in the Guitar Players Corner here on TB. I've been waiting there to see more of my old friends. :D
.
Had the Mustang IV and while I totally loved the cleans, the dirties were not very impressive. blackface - check, but I also have to have at least a decent Marshall tone or two and then maybe at least one hi-gain model. Will definitely check out the new versions though, thanks. The Katana is the current GOAT and it will be tough knocking him off his perch.

There's a guitar players forum? Seriously, I had no idea. Excuse me, I have to go to the bathroom...

My first locking straps were Schaller but after 15 or 20 years I converted to Dunlop. Last year I bought a flush mount Dunlop set but I haven’t yet installed it. The luthier’s been living well off the work I’ve sent his way this past 18 or 20 months. Three months ago I picked up my first mandolin and it’s next in line to go to the shop (for a full setup; I’ll do electric guitar and bass but mandolins are above my lay grade). My second mandolin arrived perfectly set up and ready to play (bless you, dear seller!). Maybe the bass’s time is near … fingers crossed.

I've seen this before in Holland.

"Dropveter" or licorice lacing :D

Sir wraub, so nice to hear from ya! And wouldn't ya know it, you're joining us in the hot topic of the moment...guitars and amps. It's all my fault, I blame no one else, but ya post a Tele on the board and receive all kinds of positive comments. I promise the mods we'll get back to bass business very soon, but it is a nice break.

Speaking of your Katana, it's on my shortlist 'cuz papa needs a proper guitar amp next year. I owned the 50 myself and really enjoyed everything about it. It's now in the possession of my nephew and he won't let it out of his sight! Depending on how I fare with the selling of some gear, I'm kicking around the 100 Mk ii or, if Aunt Gerty finally passes, maybe the Katana Artist and call that my retirement gift. I'd love the Fender Vibro Champ (my first amp back in the 70s), but the modelers fit my purpose so much better, kind of like you said. Enjoy the heck out of it and thanks again for stopping by!

The Katana 50 is more than enough for me and my needs, for sure. I have been playing guitar more lately, partly just because and partly because I keep finding good deals. I think I genuinely have enough now, simply enjoying playing.

The Katana is not perfect, but the editing is useful and the stock sounds are pretty good imo, but, again, I mainly leave it clean. After some time with pedals I'm enjoying just playing straight in, and using the guitar for more sounds.
And, not to unnecessarily continue the lack of bass business, but here's some of mine- :D

Are those treble basses?

Ehmmm..... I see you're already a member of the Grumpy old f*rts.... :smug:

[ ... mumble ... grumble ... Rumble ... grump ... ] Hey, you kids! Git offa my lawn!! :rage:

Eh? What?? Yeah, I'm a GOF. What's it to ya? Or, ... well, ... at least, I was one ... oncet upon a time ... .... :bag:

Time was ... it started as a amp technician's thread, talkin' all tecnical, tubes 'n' wires 'n' stuff. But that was back in the olde days, before my time, an' beyond my expertise. By the time I came along it was just a bunch of crusty ol' cusses complainin' 'bout the aches & pains of gettin' olde, so I fit right in by then. :spit:

But it wasn't all grumpin' & complainin' all the time. No, sir, by cracky! In fact, there was a whole lotsa commiseratin' and encouragement goin' out to those who were havin' some really bad medical times. :) Heartfelt personal empathy was occasionally mixed with righteous indignation at certain situations. And, of course, the inevitable politics nearly closed it down more'n oncet. If you didn't see it, you can only imagine the grumpiness! :sour::blackeye::mad: But, fortunately, that was usually only temporary and oncet resulted in a move to the "Off Topic" forum, though some TB memberships didn't survive that move.

And, just between us grumps, there was quite a bit of appreciation and thankfulness for life in general and the great outdoors in particular goin' on there! Fond rememberances of giggin' 'n' livin' in days past. Some here will remember @alaskaleftybass in particular, a right jolly olde young'un, who would often "call roll" of the GOFs just to stir up the conversation and interject his own love and gratitude for music, his beautiful Alaskan home & work and his lovely wife (not necessarily in that order). Then one day we heard he had passed, ... suddenly, ... and without warning. :crying: Not so long after that, the thread was closed and it has now joined our other bittersweet memories.

So, YES, I say proudly. I was a grumpy olde f:spit:rt. An' if I sometimes seem to still be one, ... well, ... just chalk it up as a tribute to my fellow GOFs, ... wherever they may be now, ... they know who they are, ... and who we were ... ...

Mmmm, ... uh, ... Huh? Wazzat?!? Now, I'm not tellin' you kids again! Stay offa my lawn!! [ ... grump ... Rumble... grumble ... mumble ... ]

Love this pic, wraub. I’d be a traditionalist and be partial to what looks like a 50s/60s Strat on the right, but I just admit I’m intrigued by the one in the far left. Looks like it’d been owned by Eddie Van Halen or something!

If this guitar-thing takes hold a Strat would be next on the list. Have always had one in the stable.

One thing though. Why are yours all backwards? :smug:

Why are yours all backwards? :smug:

I’m a left hander who learned to play right handed. At the time, I didn’t know that there were left handed instruments. Turns out that the music school believed that nobody should play left handed. It makes sense for stringed instruments in a orchestra, you don’t want to take someone’s eye out with a bow. There aren’t left handed pianos. I’m glad that I play right handed now, but it wasn’t easy.

They're just as backwards as I am. :)

The one on the left is a Squier Strat, a Tom Delonge model. I'm not especially a fan of his playing, but it's a good guitar. It's a hardtail, so no springs, and I consider it my "Strat-shaped Les Paul Jr". :D

The one on the right is indeed my traditional example, another Squier. Inexpensive, with low resistance pickups and a one-piece quartersawn maple neck. I got it to keep and mod, and then the guitar in the middle happened. It's my 70s example, sort of, it's also my #1 guitar.

Now I think I'm done for Strats... but, you never know. ;)

Look I don’t know if I fit here but I feel like I can say I’m a bass player now.
Here’s who I am:

I’ve been doing this music stuff for 48 years now. Had my first six string guitar and took my first guitar lesson in 1973. Bought my 1st bass in 1976. Someone gave me a set of drums around the same time. My older brother was a drummer so I used to sneak in to his room at risk of death when he wasn’t home, before I got the free drums, and play along with his Chicago albums! (The absolutely powerful, socially conscious, rocking, Terry Kath version of Chicago)

My best friend was a drummer (he gave me his old drums) so I bought a guitar to jam with him. Just the bass and me and him didn’t work. So I started playing guitar. Then he got a gig with a real band. I became their sound man/roadie fill in drummer/guitarist/singer/bass player when someone didn’t make it.

Then 1980 came along there were no jobs in Buffalo so me and a friend traveled out west I packed my drums in the back seat of a 68’ Olds convertible. Stayed in Denver a while. (Ate nothing but 5lb bags of potatoes!) No jobs there so We figured we would try Vegas. I got tired of sleeping with my drums in the car so we pulled over on the side of the road on RT 15 and I set them up in the dessert and we drove away lol. We were on the road for about a year and put about 10k on that car.

When we got back to Buffalo my mother had hung on to the bass for me. Still no work in Buffalo so off to Virginia where a friend of mine had moved when I was on the road (he was the bass player in my best friends band) I took that bass with me to Virginia and lived there a couple of years and played just that for a couple of years.

Came back to Buffalo. Got married. Settled down. Had some money. I started building home studios. Playing all the instruments and recording original stuff. That was mid 80s. In 1990 we bought a house and I started a few bands and we did several gigs. I was playing drums in those bands but had my home studio and played all the instruments and would have friends sit in with me and lay down tracks for me recording original stuff while playing covers in bars.

Skip ahead to today. I’ve done the band thing/studio thing for the last 30 years in various combinations with various people.

About 3 years ago I got hurt. Hanging from a gutter I ruptured my right distal bicep tore up my shoulder and my wrist. I was no longer able to play the drums. My right arm is shot. I had played guitars and basses all my life so it was time to switch gears. I decided to throw myself in to bass. Been doing that non-stop for 3 years now. A couple of hours just about every day for over a thousand days now. I consider myself a bassist now. Yes I was a drummer for many years in bands. I purchased 60 guitars and basses in my life and untold boards and lights and PAs and drums and guitar amps and bass amps and recording consoles and mics and on and on and on.

I’m kicking myself because I should have just thrown myself in to the bass from the beginning. I know that now with the wisdom of age. It’s where I belonged my whole life. But I can tell you that finding a drummer that can keep good time like I can is not easy. So I had value there. And I can sing while playing drums and that has real value. (And I owned the PA and had the rehearsal studio and that used to have real value lol)

What I’ve learned through the years is that bass players are the hardest to find and a good bass player is REALLY hard to find. And if your a lead singer/bass player forget it your are the messiah! Bass players are like gold. We are gold.

So I dunno. Do I belong here? Yes I can play guitar and drums and I won’t apologize for that. But I feel like a bass player now and it’s how I will finish out the rest of my life. I will die a bass player. A proud bass player. I feel like my whole life’s musical experience has led me to where I should have been all along.

I’ve learned many songs on bass in the pst 3 years but I currently am on a quest to learn 125 Beatles tunes and remember them all. 90 down 35 to go. I found a community here. People I like who play bass. I’m learning from you folks. No matter how old you get you still have stuff to learn. I believe that. Some here even play guitars. I especially enjoy the the Rumble Club run by the venerable @G-Dog and this combo club run by our fearless leader @iagtrplyr . I like you people. But if I don’t qualify as a “bass player” and the occasional discussion of our guitars (I have not been talking about guitars but I think it’s ok btw) is not allowed I can go elsewhere.
It’s all good.

Why would you even doubt it? If you have/had an approved combo, posted a pic and received a number you are welcome as far as I am concerned. Qualifying as a bass player is up to you to decide...not "suggestions from others" ;).

Sometimes I wonder if I qualify as a bass player but that's when I consider myself more of a "clams" player :laugh::laugh:. You are welcome in my book @Michael Favata.

Thanks @SoulReflection ! You guys who have been handing out clams since the 60s are awesome to me!
I was referring to a few recent post here that seem to not want the occasional discussion/share on guitars to be allowed and seem annoyed by that. Again it wasn’t me discussing guitars but I think the occasional mention is fine if others want to do that. Actually come to think of it I did mention that I am reacquiring an acoustic I sold some years ago. Thanks for the welcome @SoulReflection its meaningful to me. Respect to you “old guys” :D:laugh:

Us "old guys" have seen a thing or two...those you are referring to regarding guitar discussion had better watch out. FL was a drummer and guitar player turned bass player and believes its OK to mention guitars here. So, those critical had better watch out or they will suffer the wrath of the FL! And we all know what that means...:)
