I know you, M, and you’ve thought about a freshly-squeezed glass of Orange each day!

I re-tubed it yesterday. She’s now sporting a JJ 12AX7 Gold in V1 and a JAN Phillips 12AT7 in the effects loop. The box was dated 2/86. For me, that’s still seems like yesterday, but it’s 34 years old and looked to be in great shape. We’ll find out this week.

There are a number of reviews out there on the amp. Premier Guitar has a good one. Check ‘em out if your curiosity is too strong. :smug:

Appears I ask myself how much firepower do I actually need, considering the current state of gigosity. The PJB combo alone can likely handle most of the local sock hops. The C4 extension makes it .... beefier. But the BG-400 can really be a grab-and-go. It's the Elf and Cab 27s I've been recording with just because it's so fun.

Another C4 mated to [any amp] is certainly attractive. I do like that tube sound stuff ... going from my Peavey combo at home to a Bassman and 15 at rehearsal space was so good I didn't even know how good I had it. My memory of the Bassman is more than a little indistinct here a half a lifetime away. More or less I recall very little EQ tweaking. I plugged in and played.

At the time all that tube stuff looked positively antique, and I was GASing for ... what stopped me in my tracks was the moment when I briefly plugged into Alphonso Johnson's rig on his invitation. Of course I face planted :laugh: That was the rig I wanted ...

That the PJB cabs are [reportedly] designed for minimal colourization means I believe I hear the difference between amps. Unfortunately I am the one who plugs into one or another, and that means I'm never doing a real blind test.

In fact I find myself browsing amps nonetheless. Because I want to hear different amps. Not a lot of choices in the 200 watt to 400 watt range for the Cab 27s. Certainly I can drive the pair with a 500 watt amp with a good set of ears and a HPF. Actually the HPF is Always On for me, and to RTFM here on TB, that's a very good idea for reflex cabs.

That might have to be something I’ll have to look at down the road. With this 115, the filter might clean up the muddiness at the bottom frequencies that I remember.

Mind ye, this is a half a lifetime ago. What little I recall is it was a rack-mounted wonder. It felt to me then far beyond my reach, same as Alphonso's talent and skill :) ... but for a few minutes there ...

I'm the exception that proves the rule. I tended to be pretty out front once the band went from a 5 piece to a 4 to a 3 to a 4 to a 5 to a 3. By the time my rock band was a trio, I was front of stage and singing on about half the songs. These days, no so much with the rock.

But still pretty extroverted for a bassist.:woot:
