I'm finally getting a chance to answer b's post from ten hours ago. I've had all day to think about it, and to be honest, it's a great question. In fact, I'm glad I had a school workshop today or I'da probably fired off something clever or snarky and that be that, but with the extended time, I'm going to give the question a fair shot.
What's the goal? Well, it originally was to play bass for fun alone and with friends and/or bandmates. So that would satisfy your personal satisfaction option. And that coulda been it if it was for playing with people the last few years who wanted to make recordings for what I'll call personal aspiration. Not professional in the sense of a musical career or anything, but to be better than just jamming in the basement without a care of how it sounds.
And that was fine until I enlisted in the online orchestra where the quality of what you play helps out the entire group. True, there are multiple bassists, but you can't go into one of these songs thinking "someone will cover me." Too many years playing in our community band to know each musician must know their part as it is with any group of players trying their best to sound good.
With that, I now had to purchase at least passable recording equipment, but more importantly, learn how it all works and use it to sound respectable. Honestly, if I had the money and could hire someone I'd do that in a heartbeat and then I could just do what I love to do, play. I say that, but at the same time, I have found it inspiring to hear back something recorded knowing it was only a thought a day before. You see, b, I'm a Gemini and we like to go back and forth with both sides!
So yesterday was tedious and what you read was me whining and moaning even though I was content, minus the final bass tone (still too dark) of the looping piece I created. I have to get better, and more efficient, at the recording process and try keeping my whining to a minimum so you all don't have to suffer.
Finally, and I've said this already once, on the first day of school when I talk about these special times and how it's going to be a challenge for all of us, young and old, this year, I'm going to tell them how I too struggled with new learning but fought through it (though I made my friends on TB suffer) to reach my destination.
And it all began with someone asking me, what's your goal? Thanks.
Now, does anyone want the job of being my recording engineer and personal club valet? It pays one million Schmackeroons a week. And don't listen to those who say the paper is worthless. I have a gazillion of 'em!
