The Eagle Has Landed!!! Sadowsky All-Tube Head!!!

Larry Kaye said:
I'd be very curious as to how you compare Roger's new head with an Aggie DB359, a mesa buster 200, or the new Yorkville 200 watt tube head (other than the Aggie not quite the same boutique mistique there as the Sadowsky but hey)/ I'd like to know, know what I mean?

Have you played through any of these others in your vast GAS history? If so, once you get acclamated to the Sadowsky, any comparison would be extremely helpful to us non spenders....like tone. adjustability, volume....how much clean vs grind? Etc Etc,

I have not played through the Traynor YBA200 (is that what you mean when you say Yorkville 200w tube head?), and I have only tried a Buster head in a music store, and that was some time ago. But I do own a DB 359 and Trace Elliot Quatra Valve (both of which are rated at 200w), plus numerous other all-tube heads, so needless to say, a major shootout is forthcoming! I'm especially interested to compare the SA200 to the Eden VT-300A, which was also designed by Dolf Koch.

Tom.

I think I told you I"m gigging in Detroit on the Saturday after Thanksgiving? Are you gonna be traveling over the holiday or eatin' turkey left overs at home that weekend. Love to stop by, hit Low Down Sound, and then check in at wherever they got us staying.

I used to own the DB359...it was built like tank in short and skinny form, but I had the same problem with it as I tend to with every head. I need to tweak the tone using my DOD 31 band eq rather than get my "sound" with "just" the amps tone controls. I like what you said in your original post on the Sadowsky that you got a 40 and 80 hz adjustability. Maybe (other than not having the stash to buy a tube head and it not being a priority right now equipment wise) this could be the right "one"...who knows, but definitely up the road and not now.

Let me know about Thanksgiving weekend. My "girlfriend" (definitely not young enough to be a girl) who also plays bass would love to meet another bass addict!!

Keep me posted on where you will be playing. Normally, we start our Turkey Day Extravaganza in Cleveland (Lyndhurst, actually), then migrate to Parma, then try to fend off the tryptophan long enough to drive back to Fremont and gorge ourselves yet again. Then it is sleep, blissfull sleep...

Or, more likely, football, football, then more football! :p

But, if I can, I'll see if I can squeeze in some extra-curricular activities!

Anything is possible in the future. If the SA200 is well received, a rack mount preamp would be a logical thing to do.

Roger

Count me in if this happens. IMO The market for an all tube head is limited, but a tube preamp is going to be a sure shot.
May I suggest a "hot-rodded" DI a la Aguilar DB680 where you can send different levels that even allow you to go straight to tape without using a mic-pre?

I'm excited about something that doesn't even exist :hyper: it must be a bad case of GAS :help: :D

Guys, I just got back from a practice using my SA200/NV215, and I was very impressed. (...)

dont worry, larry, i'm sure T will put another great compari review on his often visited blog.

besides, i too will try to listen closely to how it compares to my DB359, and my other all tube setups, when i go this afternoon. :hyper:

I have the Aggie DB359. I brought it in to the shop the other and did a quick comparision and my initial impressions with the amd setting on both amps at 12 o'clock is that the SA200 is warmer and fuller. Overall a better sounding amp.

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the DB359. Set flat with a bit of bass and treble on my bass and going thru the GS410, it cuts thru like a hot knife thru butter.

I'm thinking of getting it but we just redid our basement cause it was starting to look like Tom's basement. :)

 OKAY, NOW I'M HOOKED! DB359 has always been the greatest amp tonewise to my ears! If the SA200 is even better it must be a sound out of this world! :hyper: Nino, have you compared the two amps in terms of volume?

well, instead of making a whole separate thread, figure i amend to the beast that this thread is becoming. "Shroe-dah-Heads", eat yer heart out!

sooo, had a half day, stopped by the shop, and WOAH NELLY... its small.

hehe, yup, its small! despite being 4 rack, i was a little surprised by its depth. maybe 2/3 the depth of my DB728. dunno if it weighs as much as 6 walter woods, or 1 box of Total, but it was definitely lighter than i thought. admittedly, i havent been to the gym in 4 yrs. so there's no chance i'd lift my DB359 off the top of the NV610 in the standing position. but look ma! i could easily lift the sadowsky amp! my alessandro basset hound, nonwithstanding, its one of the lighter all tube amps i've cradled and caressed... errr, ahem... held.

and while, i didnt have my bass on hand, with 9 or 10 sad's on the wall, had no trouble finding one similar to mine. plugged in a sweet natural finish ash bodied, tortoise guard, maple board V-5, and started w/ the EQ flat on the amp, all running into the newly redesigned shallow Berg 210. granted, at this point, ii start my EQ arm twisting, but w/ just the tone controls on the sad bass, i nearly shed a tear. weighty, fat, open, airy, tastes great, less filling, yes its all in there. simply fantastic.

and while, i'm not a fan of the smaller/thinner newly redesigned Berg 210, w/ the Sadowsky amp, they were starsky & hutch, riggs & murtaugh, dean & jerry, heck, tom & jerry! the Berg translated the sad tone in all its glory. sure, the NV610 cab was ok to my ears, but then again, i'm too used to have tweeters, especially for slappin', and this coming from an Acme guy.

the EQ section was voiced nicely, and even tho, i've metamorphosed into a horrificly mutated, 8-armed, parametric EQ freak, i was more than happy w/ the front end's performance. the 80Hz knob did a great job of removing some boom, the 3kHz knob pulled away some of that awful string noise, and the 800Hz midrange knob gave me a nice upfront punch, without that annoying harshness i'd get in other amps. best of all, the "bottom" & "top" knob have me that saturating sadowsky fatness i get w/ the sad onboard pre. yay! again, i'm supremely picky about EQ's, and i'd probably use a parametric in the loop, much to the chagrin to Roger, but if i'm found without, no withdrawal shakes here.

what really knocked me down was the "clean / fat" switch, tho i thinks Roger should have named it the "clean shaven / FAT burly man w/ a hairy back who watches Longhorn football" switch. in the clean position, i could get a silky smooth tube sound reminiscent of the Demeter tube gear, but in the fat position, there's this hairy warm, furry yet musical glow of semi sweet overdrive that seems to bearhug the overall sound. addictive? like fresh lemon custard. w/ the fat switch on, you can take the gain and volume knobs further for that overdrive sound found natively in the sulphur laden plains of new jersey.

those are just some initial thoughts, and didnt have alot of time to spend with, so i'll be going back with my Epifani UL310 and Acme B2 for some real sonic understanding. i'll try and write something up in comparison to my DB359. that is, unless Tommy beats me to it... ;)

btw, if anyone wants to hear the Sadowsky amp live, get some tickets to a Vince Gill show near you. AFAR(oger)K, michael rhodes'll be implementing it into his live rig.

BTW, FYI,

i got to see the new two channel preamp pedal, which has been extreme makeover'd from the ol' version. the first channel is the same we know, love, and slobber over, but the second channel sports a midrange knob alongside a nifty sweepable freqency knob for all y'all clamouring for a sadowsky style midrange knob. and while, i wasnt allowed to try it due to some minor tweaks roger wanted to try, it functions much like a souped up BassBone; i.e. the ability to run two basses at once, or one bass into the two channels for some tonal switching. and the options ante have been upped to include a handy headphone out, as well as the ability to switch from an "instrument" level out, or a "line" level out to run into a power amp!!! precursor to the rackmount preamp? oh, the giddy adrenaline!

Excellent, Damn, I though my amp search was over with the DB750.... :crying: Thanks for the review Jokerjkny...Seems like this amp is gonna set a new standard for all tube heads...

AAARRRRGGGGHHHH! 2 channel preamp.... man, sadowsky just gets better and better!!!

Thank you J-man, for sharing your thoughts! I was somewhat fearful that maybe someone had slipped me a Mickey, or that I was high on some unseen gaseous stimulant while I was playing my SA200. It's nice to hear that a fellow TBer with a proven ear (and flare for descriptive remarks!) seems to like it as well! :D

I am really pressed for time right now, but I am so excited, I have to share these quick shots:

Man, if there's a better looking rig than that, I have not seen it yet! (of course there is better looking carpeting, and better photography...)

114_1412.jpg

It is a very compact head, and it fits nicely atop a Bergantino NV-series cab:

114_1424.jpg

Talk about compact, the package was very svelt, and smartly done! (Yes, I was so excited that I took a picture of the amp in the box, before I took it out!)

114_1406.jpg

How's about a little tube glow!

114_1423w.jpg

I promise more details, and hopefully better photos, later, but let me say for now that this amp is plenty loud! It pushed the NV215 quite hard, but with excellent control. And the EQ is extremely flexible. I'll try to get more detailed later, but let me say that I could easily dial in a number of excellent tones with this amp (and yes, having both a 40 Hz and an 80 Hz control leads to some interesting combinations!).

Gotta run, Tom.

Yeah, whatever dude, I'm not impressed whatsoever (the first sign of jealously is denial) :D
