The Mandolorian feels like the direction Star Wars might have evolved onto the small screen (comfortably embracing 70s/80s TV tropes) in a parallel universe where the 1978 Holiday Special had been a well-received fan favorite. And I mean that as a compliment. It's like a time capsule of 1979 pre-ESB fandom, when A New Hope, the Holiday Special, the novelizations, and the Kenner toys were the entirety of the Star Wars canon.

I donnoh about "anything else" but I agree that it's better than Eps 1-3 and 7-9.

I watched the first three episodes with my wife and kids on New Year’s Eve. Super disappointed. By a few minutes into the second episode, I was playing on my phone.

For various reasons, I wasn’t in a super great mood (namely, I quit drinking early last year, and this was my first stone cold sober NYE in probably 20 years), so I’m gonna give it awhile and try again. That said...

I don’t like baby yoda.

I enjoyed it up until the last two episodes; I thought the writing got sloppy, particularly in the final episode. But production values were top notch!

It seems to me that it's not really made for kids. But I could be wrong. It's more like a spaghetti western set in space.

I agree, and I like spaghetti westerns. I don’t remember a lot about the show, aside from it being really predictable, like the opening bar fight. Also, that I thought of Mongo from Blazing Saddles every time they said Mando.

And also the incredibly annoying baby yoda.

Well, I mean, to each their own. Just saying that I'm enjoying it, even Baby Yoda. If you don't care about Baby Yoda, you probably think all the fighting and death are for nothing. The characters risk life and limb for him because they care about him. That's their whole motivation.

I’m gonna give it another shot later. I wind up loving all sorts of stuff I started off hating. Guess I was expecting something entirely different.

Season two is coming in October according to a comment made by Disney CEO Bob Iger Tuesday. Also, there will be additional seasons after two.
He also mentioned possibly spin off series for other characters from the show.

I find the writing to be weak and the dialogue, for the most part, to be downright awful. If it wasn’t Star Wars based, it probably would have been a failure. That said, it IS Star Wars, with a good amount of fan service, and combined with Baby “Yoda”, it delivers on that account and I found it fun to watch. Not a great moment in filmmaking history by any means but a part of me finds it highly entertaining despite the obvious flaws.

I think a TV-Y rated spin-off series was a no-brainer, a foregone conclusion, from the first moment in Ep. 1 when the character in question opened their big beautiful eyes and wiggled their long green ears. If there's one thing Disney Corp understands better than anyone, it's how to market the **** out of a cute and cuddly puppet character.

You just know somewhere at Disney HQ there is a list on someone's desk that looks something like this:

• Baby R2D2
• Baby Greedo
• Baby Admiral Akbar

• etc.
