the photos lack the brilliance of the contrasting woods...very difficult to get nice light on this specimen. buckeye burl top, birdseye maple neck, 24 fret. only have it a few days so the jury is still out on what i like about it or not? to state the obvious it is light years different than the sr5 i have been playing for the last 10 years.

Dang, dude. To be honest, I've never really been a buckeye fan, but this bass pulls it off in a big way. The BEM board is awesome. Nice!

Awesome bass!!! I am glad I got an MTD, or else I would have some uncontrollable GAS!!!! There are some killer basses on this thread!!
If you guys could help me out, since I just got my MTD, I am still learning how to voice the eq. I really like the eq suggestion that Mr. Tobias has included in the literature I received with my bass: Bass and Treble all the way up, cut the Mids at 1000hz, both pups on, gives me that killer Gouche style slap tone, from there I've been able to make micro adjustments on the fly. What are some of your "go to" settings? I know this obviously varies from bass to bass, venue to venue, and rig to rig, but where do you guys start out?

Yeah, I know that letter, I have a few of them. Thing is, that's one area I'd generally disagree with Mike. These are so bright as they are, I can't imagine ever boosting the highs... especially for slap. To be honest, most of the time I run them flat, because they're so "tonally complete" I can usually do most of the rest with my hands, but when I do use EQ, it's to cut the treble sometimes, or if I'm favoring the bridge, maybe to boost low mids and maybe (although to a lesser extent) bass as well. Keep in mind, my wood combos are typically bright as they are, and 90% of my time is spent performing in typical bars and crowded stage mixes, so take that in with my comments. In short, big low bass and lots of hot treble don't work great for me.

Solo the neck pup with eq all flat (depending on rig). My Avadore/Maple 535 offers a fat and round tone. I love it.

thanks everyone....i haven't begun to break it in yet so I don't have much to offer in the eq setting dept. but to me setting are all about what you like as in individual. the engineers might have a different view on this...haha...but it's all about YOU man! have fun....

Thanks for the advice everyone!! I must say that this particular MTD is very dark and woody sounding, to my ears, when the eq is flat. I am loving the versatility of this bass. It's a great instrument!!!!

One of my favs for slap is pan to the bridge about 25% and boost the bass a bit maybe 10-15% and to me that is a fat, modern, oraganic slap tone that is tough to beat. Mine is ash body with rosewood board FWIW.

Thanks Vic-Yes-I've been to that site too and you're right thats where some of my Questions should have been directed,though initially I was'nt sure whether the bass in the pic was an American or not. In any case-I'm hoping to soon be an MTD owner-I'm not predjudiced whether it will be an American MTD or a born on foreign soils MTD...only that it sounds really great, that it has a thin neck, that it has four strings, plays really well and preferably is fretless. As I'm obviously in the learning stage of these basses , I get confused at times-I hope you can forgive my "derailment"....thanks for the non-American MTD Thread. But I'll still be here reading, learning, and hoping to find a good used American MTD that fits my specs if possible...Peace...DAcat

No sweat. It's not my thread, either, but I do really like it a lot better when threads don't get too far off-topic.

I also posted the link mainly because I didn't want you to think I was just being a self-important jerk pretending to be thread police or something.

Also, per your USA vs non comment, at least with me, yeah, I do prefer to support USA jobs when I can (and please, let's not derail on that), but at least for me, that's not why I buy the USA MTDs. I buy them because Mike Tobias himself builds them, and to me, that's worth paying all the extra for. I've been wanting his instruments badly since WAAAAAAY before I could ever even consider affording one. If he moved outside the USA, I'd still buy his basses.
