Aren't they just...
They stopped making them around '84 or '85 and now they are very hard to come by... eBay has it's share now and again but a good one will cost in the region of £5000 ($10000) although here's a beauty I was watching last week that went for much less...

No international shipping unfortunately (as is normally the case).
Time for a reissue...? One of the big problem is that collectors have snapped them up. I've seen a single collection of between 10 or 12 Ric 4005s just sat there gathering dust. It's just not right...!!!
My favorite Rickenbacker! I heard way back when that one of the reasons that it was discontinued was a feedback problem. The one I played back in '74 really sounded and played amazingly well and I always liked the way they looked, although I have spoken to someone at Rickenbacker who never cared for its' looks. Oh well, different strokes.

Oh i didn't notice-- is that a SD bridge p/u? It looks a lot better than a normal Rick bridge p/u without the cover-- i can't stand mine without it lol. How does it sound compared to a Rick p/u?

That is the standard Chris Squire pickup. However I believe it is the same pickup as in the above guy's 4001v63. I believe it is called the "horeshoe" pickup and it is not in the standard 4003. Right now the model that contains the Toaster in the bridge and the horseshoe is the Rick 4001c64 and 4001c64s....the Paul McCartney specials. They are very similar to the above v63 which means toaster and horeshoe pickup, mono output, and a dot inlayed fretboard.
The difference between the v63,c64(s) and the 4001CS is the Chris squire things. My fretboard is not made of rosewood but solid african vermillion. The body and neck is also thinner on the Chris Squire. Also, the creme finish is exclusing to the CS. I also heard that the pickups in the Squire are wired a little different to be a hotter output. There is no doubt about it that I have read on every rickenbacker forum that while you pay big bucks for the CS it is definitely the best sounding and playing rick out there. I read people's posts on the Rick forums who have owned the 4001, 4003, 4001v63, 4001CS and 4001c64. Everything I have read that the people who have played them all agree the CS is the best one.....just not everyone wants to shell out the big bucks. I think it was a wise investment for myself seeing as only 1000 were made and they are out of production....I called Rick and they said they will never put it back in production. It is truly a Lmtd. edition.

interesting... i do envy a 4001cs as well, but like you said-- the money is probably out of my league haha.
but i do see myself buying another rick one day.

I can remember seeing a Fireglo rick with a black pickguard.... i'm thinking of putting a hipshot bridge and a black pickguard on my 4003..... that'll be sweet

Sounds like the truss rods might need to be checked for proper setting.
Rickenbacker suggests a dead flat fingerboard (zero relief) for their basses. Any relief in the neck will "raise" the nut relative to the bridge (so to speak). This in turn, results in the bridge having to be adjusted lower to compensate.
So, all else being equal... check to make sure you've got as close as you can get to a dead straight neck on that Rick.
