The Samick Club

I had the same model in the late 80s. It was the first brand new bass I ever bought. (Mine was blue/purple. It would change colour depending on the light.) I kept it until I bought my first 5 string fretless. (Also a Samick) I can't recall the model #, but at least it's a starting point, age wise.
Thank you for the replay. :)
Mine does not change the color, but it's a beautiful cherry wood like, wich I really love. :)

Hello Ayce,

The year was helpful. I've found two similar model, but I'm not 100% sure.
- YBE5-630
- SCBM2G

What do you think?

Samick seems to go through periods where they want to sell guitars in the U.S. under their own name followed by periods where they don't. As of right now they no longer want to sell in the U.S. under the Samick label and have discontinued all of the Greg Bennett line of electric guitars and basses.

The Samick distribution warehouse is 20 miles from where I live. Both last year and again this year they have attempted to liquidate the stock from the warehouse.

This year's sale was this past weekend and I would speculate that they probably have very little inventory remaining. I bought a 5-string Corsair P-J bass from them. Got it OTD for $150. Quality is about on par with the Squier VM line.

They also had a unique 6-string electric guitar that I had never seen nor heard of. Apparently, a few years ago they created a new Electrin line, separate from the Greg Bennett axes. One of these was the RS10 "Rose" model, a modern Telecaster designed by J. T. Riboloff who was a former designer for Gibson. It's a double cutaway with a contoured body but still nails the Tele sound. Got it for $175 OTD.

I kinda hate to see them go. They were a decent alternative to Squier.
FWIW Samick and Cort make the most basses and guitars than any other manufacturers. Both Cort and Samick are coming out with more of their own product because more of the 'big' guys are going to China for their lower cost models.
It is simply a matter of survival. Some of Cort's Artisan Series are gorgeous. I haven't seen too many of the newer Samick's to make an overall comment based on looks of which I am a sucker for. Eye Candy always ropes me in.

Welcome to TB!
Here's info on the Y-series model : Y
The YV-441 is listed but without a photo, just scroll down.
I don't know what they're worth, but even if I did I couldn't really tell you - questions regarding potential sale prices are limited to supporting members.

These guys might be able to help if their website is still active, but I don't think it is.

I bought this Samick 4 Artist Series bass for my son approx 1996. He used it through school and eventually got married before giving it back to me a few years ago. He found that having a young family didn't give him the time required to be in a band. I inherited the bass and added it to my collection of "big name" basses. It really is a nice bass and has a good sound and plays very well. It has a comfortable easy playing neck and I find playing it a pleasure. The deep cherry red finish is great and the bass looks a million bucks. I have it tuned with an old 5 string set minus the G so its a BEAD bass and I wouldnt sell it at all. Its a great little Asian made bass. Sorry about the low quality pic.

Hi, while trying to identify my bass I found "The Samick Club". I have a 4-string that has to be the same series as your 5-string. Googling around I found this site: G
The model on my bass must be Samick GB 637 and yours should be GB5-627 or GB5-639.
This is a very nice bass, easy to play but hard to find, even the information was almost impossible to find. I will never let this bass go, it's definitely a keeper. These basses was produced only 1991-1992.

Hi from Sweden!

Nice looking neck thru!

Hi i'am new here @ talkbass and i own a Samick, that i have bought since 2 weeks. I have restaurated her and now she shines like a chocolate bar...she was in a very forgotten and ugly condition, but most of the rust has gone now.. the luck is, that she is in nearby mint condition..no big scratches or dings and dongs..

But i know nothing about her, i dont find any information about her in the internet.. i dont know the specific model number nor exactly the Date of birth.
I guess she is from 1991, because the serial begins with S91..

it's definitly before the Greg Bennett Aera, because of the open-Book-Headstock and she has no carved Horns....

SHe plays like butter and weight like a fly, only 3800 grams.

Even the original pups are good enough..the pots are very good, no buzzle or hazzle..even after so many yeard unused....

Another nice looking neck thru!

Hi guys!
Just got the Cobra bass used(8 years old). Its a beast.
-It has weight, but not that heavy and has a pretty good balance. Minor neck dive.
-Sound is superb. The bass boost is really powerful. 4 knobs: volume, bass boost, treble boost, pickup balance
-Plays really well
-High mass brigde & the neck thru design gives you all the vibration you want
+1 for the fingerboard, its beautiful

Greetings, everybody! I've just found this thread - and thanks for all the useful information - and I was wondering if one of you could help me out. I'm considering getting an old Samick p-bass - I believe it's one made in the 90's, all black with black pickguard and a thumbrest on it. I might pay 450 Reais for it, here in Brazil, something around 120 US dollars. I'm not a full time musician, but I'm gonna need an instrument that I'd be able to play with live and in the studio. It seems to be in good shape. Is it a good deal? Again, thanks in advance (and sorry if I've broken any rules or anything, I'm new to the forum).
