It's not always the case, but usually cabs from the same manufacturer match-up better than those from different manufacturers.

Bag End does make some very good cabinets, so it would be hard to make a bad choice between the two companies.

I'd go for sealed cabs with the V8 or any other tube amp. If two 2x10"s are your thing, Thomann also sells the G-K 210SBX (8 ohm), but with those you'd be forced to use two because the V8 has output transformer taps for 2 ohm or 4 ohm loads.

Agreed. This is why I usually recommend Bergantino's NV line. I really love my NV215 with the V8. However, of the ported cabs I have tried with tube amps, some standouts include the Accugroove Whappo, Jr. and two or more ACME Low B-2's (I presume Low B-4's would be great, too, but I have not heard them).

Another promising cab is the upcoming 4x10 by Jim Bergantino and Roger Sadowsky. This cab is ported, but was designed to work with the Sadowsky SA200 all tube head, and as such it is highly efficient and tuned to respond well to a tube amp.

Just got my V8 back from the Doctors. Hui-ui-ui, I love the sound. My Ric now sounds so much more alive and fat and the highs aren't nearly as sharp as they were with my Peavey. I'm only running at half-power since I'm at home and my neighbours already hate me. Can't wait to give it a real workout in the practice space.

I'm having a small problem with noise though. It's rather noisy in the clean channel and when I engage the second(dirty) channel there's a quite a bit of squeaking, so much of it that when I turn the compressor on it actually compresses it even at the lower settings. It's not feedback(it's there, even when I turn it on standby) and ground lift has no effect on it either. What's going on here and is there an easy fix?

I'm looking for a little info on the Trace Elliot GP7SM-130. Its a combo with one 15" speaker, 7 band pre, 130 watts/260 watts max. It has a big slot in the front instead of the usual metal speaker grill.

Anyone ever used one of these? Are they any good? It seems like they were early 90's, but I'm not sure about that. I need a combo for home practice, but also loud enough to jam with others. Any info you can give would be great.

to me that sounds like it might need some biassing, which is said to be really easy on the V8. so if the doctor didn't check that, i'd try that out first.

uh well, i have to admit that my v-type seems to have the same problem, and i just read somewhere that it's probably a biassing problem. But i can't really figure out where the trimpots in my amp are, so it's not like i really know stuff about it or anything.

How much is a GP12 SMX 300W 2x10 Combo (Green Carpet era) worth? I've played the GP12 SM version and liked it a lot, as far as I can tell the SMX ought to be even better. It's just there's one on the bay and I'm toying with buying it. Also, what's the weight like, I read 45kg somewhere but the SM I played didn't feel anything like that heavy. Opinions on the amp too?

Yesterday I played with a Trace Elliot amp for the first time. It was a combo with a 15" speaker (unfortunately can't remember the model right now). It sounded very powerful and I really liked the tone quality, but I noticed that I only could get a pleasant tone with the mid shape on. It works as a mid contour and again, I liked the way it works, but being myself a player who stopped using the contour button from amps years ago, I couldn't find an usable tone with the mid shape off. I don't use the contour feature anymore because I want more presence when playing harmonics and overall more defined notes, specially in a melodic bassline, but scooping the mids is great for thump-thump and slap lines, not for jazzy lines or simply for cutting through the rest of the band (IMO). Of course, maybe it's a matter of spending more time with the amp, but I've played with lots of amps that work for me without the mid contour feature in no time. Is it just me or is that a common situation with TE amps?

to revisit the stuff i talked about a few pages earlier: this week i got my trace 212 cab where it should be: underneath my amp. it sounds pretty good, but i'm not sure whether i like it or not. i a/b tested it with my 410, and it goes deeper as well as higher, so that's the good part. the less good part is that it seems to miss out on mid frequencies, where the 410 has its excellence... so: lots of 'oomph', but lacking 'cut-through'. i know, the way to go is to keep both of them, but darn, they're big, and my room is small. i'll think about it for a while... now here's some pics of my trace stuff
