I hate to admit it but blocks, bindings and matching head stocks that don't conform to the traditional Fender aesthetics just don't do it for me.

it's a pretty personal thing...like what ya like 
fwiw; I have two matching headstock basses; both of which I bought used.
neither have blocks or binding.
I probably wouldn't have built either the way they are.
I think one looks really good that way, the other one doesn't bother me so much now that I'm used to it, and, it's such a monster.
I can post pics of it's helpful.

I think that a maple board with black blocks looks awesome with a matching headstock. I could be biased, but my Sherwood green Valenti with maple board and black blocks looks awesome with a matching headstock. I once owned a sonic blue jazz with maple and pearl blocks with a matching headstock and it didn't look that awesome. Most of the time I'm not a huge fan of all light colored basses though. The light and dark contrast looks cool to me.

That bass looks great. Killer with the matching headstock.Should have never sold this one...
Check out this mod I made to my Valenti 5. I wanted a bass with a fancy top, but I'm so used to playing jazz basses that the missing pick guard really bothered me and made it difficult for me to pull off certain riffs. I got the idea from Norm Stockton, but did my own design. The treble side is the exact curve of the Valenti headstock. The "slap ramp" is Ziricote like the top and the ramp between pickups is Ebony.

Funny enough, I played Jazzes and P's for many years until I got into more boutique basses 6-7 years ago. Now a Jazz with a pickguard drives me nuts. Totally screws me up. I now strongly prefer basses without pickguards.
I still have my 70's Fenders, but I don't play them much these days.
Funny how things change and even after decades, preferences can change.
Got a question for you guys, thinking about what guts I'd like in a new build. I love everything funk! Finger funk, slap, you name it, I love it! OTOH, I make my living playing rock. Hard, modern, 80's hair metal, and some pop. I'm playing through Ampeg and GK amps(SVT-4Pro, SVT-7Pro, GK 700RB-II). I just want some J-Style basses that can handle the rock stuff I play with my cover band, and the funky stuff I do on my own.
Right now, I'm leaning towards Nordstrand DCBs and the Nordstrand 3B preamp, but after listening to some Alter Bridge, and digging Brian Marshall's tone, I'm also thinking about Sadowsky soaps and pre. So, if you were making a living playing rock, and recording funk tunes at home, what would you put in your new Valenti? I'm open to any and all options...

I really like the Nordy Big Singles and 3B pre in my Valenti. Great for slap, pop, country, metal, etc. pretty much everything.
Thanks! I know you have some amazing gear, so if you say that's a killer, versatile setup, I'm gonna check it out. I'll do some research, but can anyone give me the quick and dirty on the difference between the Big Singles and the Big Splits?
Other than the American Deluxe Jazz V I had(beautiful bass, mediocre guts), all of my basses have been soapbar's. After listening to Brian Marshall's Sadowsky, I'm definitely open to other options. Not sure if he has SCs or HCs, but it sounds killer.
Talk to Nino as well. He has lots of experience with most pickups.
The big splits seem a bit warmer than the big singles and hum obviously goes away. I don't notice hum with my big singles at all as Nino shields well... But I rarely solo either PU.
Pretty much exactly what he said... This is the same setup I have in my Valenti 5 and it's awesome. Personally, I like single coils better than split coils or soapbars. Unless I'm doing solo stuff, I just feel like single coils sound better. I even had a Sadowsky and put single coils in it.
