Thunderbird Club

Some comparisons:

Left: CTS 250k pot, 3/8" each for the threaded shaft and the splined shaft

Center: CTS 250k no-load pot, same dimensions as the "plain" 250k pot

Right: CTS 500K no-load pot, 3/8" for the threaded shaft, and 1/4" for the splined shaft

Since I previously removed some material from the mounting area for the pots, this is how the "plain" 250k fit:

:)
Oh dear.... Looking at guts makes me squeamish.

I've got a 400RB 2nd gen from the 90's (removable power cable, & slightly different front details) - found as a backup/portable amp in comparison to my 70's peavey heads & i gotta say it sounds awesome. Played 800rbs too (live & rehearsal), doesn't do the trick, IMO. Feel the 800rb might benefit from being bi-amped as it was its design, though the ones i've played live went through hartke cabs (alu/paper cones didn't like the tone), the one in rehearsal space might need a good once over to bring it back to life - feels as though i need to really crank the volume to hear it, where my 400rb sits nicely well before reaching total rumble chaos xD.

I'll admit, it does take some time to dial it all in, though i've figured that if i took the approach of how i dial an ampeg SVT with it's hi & lo switches, with a slightly broader active EQ i got the sound i wanted. Mid scoop/contour switch engaged (sub Ultra lo Ampeg style), lo mids dialed back, hi mids dialed up a touch, Bass & treble boosted to 1 o clock. I'll use the hi switch in case i want some real cut through punk treble clank. Otherwise, i usually push the "channel" volume first to about noon, then dial the master volume to taste. Per GK manual, says if you want a cleaner tone, crank the master volume all the way & use the channel volume to bring the sound up.
Nice perspective!

Happy Birthday John Taylor.........
One of my all time fave bassist'.

That's quite a place to cut the video title text off there.

i got a 400rb a year or so ago. it lives up to its hype. i was really impressed with it. probably my most used amp now.

I find I can very quickly get a great tone from any GK by setting all four EQ knobs to just past 12:00. Then just season to taste. For my taste, the Contour button or knob is evil and stays off with extreme prejudice.

I like GK's for SS amps, they have a little bite.

GKs are a long time favorite….took a 400B with a custom built 2x15 enclosure to Europe in the mid 80’s and gigged that thing exclusively for almost a decade….
Bob Gallien is an awesome dude…would really like to get my hands on a 600B….absolute tone monster..
