Thunderbird Club

Supertone worked for me - early pic of my Saundersbird before installing the FCS/Kubicki 9v pre. I had a generic 4-band pre in it - it sounded ok.

Used it recently (Beaster Sunday) - just for fun.

Geo - I just love all the hidden gems to put in your builds!
It takes a very unique artistic talent to create something that looks so attractive from a distance and then gets even more exciting as you start to see the details up close. From 20 feet out that Saundersbird looks stunning, familiar and unique at the same time. The pickguard material and the mirror control plate, such original touches. Then as you look closer, the finger ramp between the pickups, brilliant player focused add. And the chrome bridge saddles in the black bridge that break up what would otherwise be a sea of black running down the center block. The use of black knob rings and strap locks to tie into the bridge body while using chrome tuners to tie into the mirror control plate. And all signed off with a custom and very 1960’s cool signature neck plate. Looks like you even found a creative way to stuff that preamp in a shallow Tbird control cavity utilizing alternating black/white materials to raise the control cavity cover.
Nicely done!

:) Thanks! Sharp eye G - this bass was a ongoing process before ending up like it is. Originally I wanted a graphite neck, but the NOS Saunders P neck came up and I pounced on it. $65 - made in the newly initiated FCS in the late '80s, commissioned by Saunders - an independent who launched a company making basses but failed to pull it off. I tried to buy another later but was outbid.

And yes - stuffing the FCS/Kubicki pre into a shallow cavity invited a creative solution! I dealt with the same issue installing the G&L L-2000 pre in my Factorbird fretless. :) Bottom line - the Saundersbird rocks hard as only a Kubicki Factor can and the neck is top notch.

Just in case you wonder why Saunders basses weren't successful...

Gluff makes some good quality bodies with really nicely figured wood as long as you don’t mind a semi hollow body. My BlingBird is a Gluff body that I had Pat Wilkins finish in tiger eye burst…

yeah I told him I didn’t mind and preferred the semi hollow , but no fancy wood, but that’s all he makes…

I can’t wait to pick up my Studio from Dave at the GTG.
Sitting in its excessively heavy case waiting for the day.

It will share the back seat, securely fastened, with a VP, National, and Dano. The Sunn 200S will make a visit too so Chucky can cure the hiss. Oh, and two cases of 805 on ice in the bed.

you never said how that story ended….was the bass playable with the crack? how did you finish the gig?
Totally playable. Finished that gig(wedding reception)and many more nights on our steady gig b4 taking it in for its first repair. Unfortunately, the little bastard's (who knocked it over )parents were, let's say, "connected" and I was told to drop it.

Other than his name and the fact that he plays a bass, I know nothing about Mike Watt either. So I looked up his information…

“Michael David Watt is an American bassist, vocalist and songwriter. Watt co-founded and played bass guitar for the rock bands Minutemen, Dos, and Firehose. He began a solo career with the 1994 album Ball-Hog or Tugboat?, he has since released three additional solo albums, most recently in 2010 with Hyphenated-man.”

After reading that, I still don’t know anything about Mike Watt. I can’t name one song he played on, and have never heard of any of the bands he’s been in, or any of their songs. All I can assume is he at least played a thunderbird at some point (most of the pics I saw of him playing were non thunderbird basses) and is probably an excellent player. Obviously I need to do a deeper dive.
Don't feel alone. B4 TB Club, I'd never heard/heard of him.
