Thunderbird Club

Hi Fellow Birds of Thunder!

Just wondering if there was a forum or collection of posts of Thunderbird Rigs. Mostly looking for the amps that make a TBird sound as glorious as possible. So far I like my B-15r but I’ve been on the hunt for something more portable but striking out.

Thank you!

Depends on what you consider glorious!
For heavy rock, I like my PF50T into 2 x 210AV cabs or an Ampeg 810.
I also have a Marshall tube power amp I drive with GK MB200 and run into Ampeg 210 and 115 Classic cabs.
There's lots of love for Ashdowns here, and Mesa, and Sunn

As mentioned earlier yesterday when picking up my Portaflex amp I stumbled across a GC Clearance sale on a bass I’ve been eyeing for a while. A brand new Epiphone Jack Casady for a price lower than many of the used ones I’ve been looking at. Played it and was very impressed, so I snagged it for about $500 out the door. This one’s very light at 7 pounds 6 ounces, no neck dive and no obvious flaws or damage. A unique and useable sound, plenty low when needed and plenty of bite when needed.

Factory rounds will probably get changed to something else, what are other JC players stringing with these days?
Nice one. Good color!
I'm also thinking about strings for mine. I think mine has Roto 66s now.

I want to check that out!
There's a couple different ways to do it, but this is probably the simplest I've seen thus far:

The gang here discusses amps all the time. There’s an eclectic mix of good stuff. Personally, I don’t know much about portability.

I have Ampeg V-4B AV, Ashdown ABM 500, and really lightweight, Ashdown RM (class D) series. I have these and am very happy. The Ampeg 212 cab is not heavy and sounds great.

As mentioned by Engle: PF50T into 2 x 210AV cabs. If I were buying something really portable, this would be very high on my list, as it first option.

Lots of ways to do lots of things these days. If I had all the money, my personal rig would be a carbon fiber GR 610 and a Darkglass head, but there are still gonna be big time fans of the SVT for use with thunderbirds. I kinda split the difference: 6 pound head, big dumb cab on wheels that weighs what a 90s supermodel does. Also, that Dingwall weighs nothing.

This is lightweight, very portable, and sounds fantastic with my Thunderbirds. Orange TB500 and 2x OBC112 cabinets.

Both cabs, the head, two basses (in gig bags), small pedalboard and stands all fit in the trunk

Of course tonight I’ll be going all tube with an AD200B and one OBC115.

What’s your budget?

Of course this is certainly not portable.
But it gets, “that tone”

On the replacement topic, I just replaced my 2002 Dodge Cummins of 22 years with a 2024 Ram 3500 HO Limited Night Edition. OMG, talk about $$$$$$!. Wife says I can keep my Dodge, but it's always been garaged and would now have to be stored outside, I won't do that to her. Good news is after 22 years, I'll get over 1/2 what I paid for it, bad news, a little piece of my ❤️ will go with her.

Trucks are definitely keeping their value these days. During covid, I was offered more than I paid for my 2015 GMC Sierra. Problem is, when they were back in stock they were over twice what I paid for mine. :greedy:

Ok, help me spend or not spend some money. Not sure if this is a reasonable deal on a 1978 Greco II I got them down to $1150. Says electronics needed changing but pickup is original.

Greco TB-900 Thunderbird Electric Bass Guitar 1978 Vintage Brown Rosewood | eBay
The Greco looks to be pretty much original except for the bridge which looks like a replacement (that’s ok). The slack E string is puzzling but probably just loosened to take pictures of the frets (which they didn’t show, so who knows for sure, bad neck???). The pup visually looks to be original, if it isn’t then hard pass on the deal. Not sure what is meant by “electronics needed changing”. Does that mean they don’t currently work and still need to be replaced - if so, hard pass since you can’t verify it’s the pickup that isn’t working properly. If they mean they already replaced them, then have them provide a photo of the control cavity to see if it was a hack job or not (replaced pots/cap/jack are ok as long as it was like for like and not some odd mod).

Personally, my opinion is that there are plenty of Greco basses to choose from. None are selling super fast because most are overpriced. I’d hold for a good working no issues II or IV in all original condition for $1200 or under, they are out there. Player wear and skanky hardware are ok with these basses, they are not what I’d consider investment grade instruments, just damn good sounding birds.
