We had 3 break ins in Tahoe City. Last one the bear turned on the stove burner and charred the cabinets and refrigerator. If the meter reader hadn’t noticed, we’d have lost the house. That was it for my mom. Sold the house in the middle of the downturn.

Knobs always removed from the stove when we’re not there.

That helps. But bears just move them unless they’re firmly nailed down. And accidentally stepping on one isn’t fun. I tell you they are smart buggers. We’re doing electrified bungees I think.

So it would deliver a slight shock? As long as it doesn't hurt the animal. If being attacked yes, do whatever to defend yourself - I just think harming any animal in any way that could be avoided is optimal. Needless to say, bears lived there before humans...

Obviously a serious matter you now have to contend with. I really sorry to hear that and see the damage. I'm just thrilled no one was there when it happened. I hope getting it put back together goes well. Wish you were close enough to lend a hand.

Over the years I've done morning bike rides returning to Pacific during Fog Fest. I ended up walking a few blocks w/the bike as it's a mob scene. Maybe on of those little bikes and definitely not motorized. Check out this crazy bike that CJ has hanging at Winters' -

CJ being an overgrown skate-boarder was able to ride it - I passed as I could see it coming to no good...

There’s some paid parking at the nearby high school (Oceana), which is just up the street from Winters.

For those that aren't part of the CA scene, the bears that are left in California were the primary prey of the California Grizzly. So, they are genetically programmed to fear things standing on two legs. I still wouldn't stand between mommy and a cub, but there aren't any reports of human attacks. I have seen them go running off crying when hit with paint balls...very sad.

Exactly. They were extinct in SoCal for a long time. Grizzlies and Native Americans saw to that. Then in the thirties, an idiot hotel owner in San Bernardino thought it would be a good idea to import some so his guests could experience nature. And now it’s a problem. And get this. There is some prof at UCSB that wants to reintroduce the Grizzly to Los Padres. I love watching Grizzlies. On TV. Not in my backyard.
