Thunderbird Club

yeah mine feels flimsy (doesn't even say Gibson)....the old one (like yours) is built more like a 7ender case as is the '13 (in the back of top pic).....have been using this one for gigs with no problem but don't think I would check it in on a plane or ship it without box....

Yeah. All my Gibson cases have the Gibson logo. Even the Gibson case I bought for my Aria six sting acoustic guitar in ‘78 has the Gibson logo on it.

Thanks for this!!!

So:
  • 2017 Epiphone VP 10 15/16" 14 11/16”
  • 2023 Epiphone 64: 10 3/4", 14 9/16"
To those of you that have both, do you think the slight difference in pickup placement or the actual pickup(s) construction is why the ‘64 sounds like it has better lows?

The other thing I’m wondering is if the pickguards are interchangeable between the VP and the 60’s/64
I will be able to answer this question tonight.

The Amazon gigbag for the Rex Thunderbird fits well. I approve of this gigbag.....good quality, plenting of padding.

Oh my god! What an outstanding video. Of course. Legends of surf.
“Long Way to the Top” was a 6 part TV documentary in 2001 celebrating Oz Rock n Roll, Rock and Pop from the 50s on. Also came out in a 3 CD set which I have, although they interspersed comments / commentary from the artists through the cd so a track might be the song plus a comment / memory from the artists through. Which was good at the first listen but sometimes you only want the music.
In 2002 they took it on the road and wheeled all the oldies out (ok, only the live and mobile ones). Sell outs around the capital cities. That would be where that clip was from. Billy Thorpe was probably the “King” of the LWTTT Concerts. Ironically AC/DC didn’t appear but Billy lead the ensemble in playing LWTTT to close each show.

Edit: I would have loved to be up ^ there with that mob playing along to that

I'm pretty sure that was the original. He's English, in spite of what he sounds like.

Then there's these English guys.

Every track on that album is insanely great. It is one of the greatest records ever recorded. I had the honor of seeing them at the Civic on the tour for that album. Three plus hours of nonstop awesome! $7.50. GA. The mosh pit was crazy! No one got hurt. Everyone had a great time. I almost started to cry when they broke into Stay Free.

I’m sure the different pup locations play into the tone difference a bit but probably barely noticeable at only 3/16” difference on the neck and 1/8” difference at the bridge. In all my playing around with Tbird pup placements I found easily noticeable differences on the neck pickup at 3/4” or more and on the bridge at 3/8” or more, anything less than those just didn’t amount to much.

You moved the bridge pickup on the Willbird 1/2”. But since I also went with SD pickups, can’t say which added the most to the low end.

The pickups are different between the two versions, the Epi '64 has a better bas/lo-mid response. They are not branded as 760 either.
