Thunderbird Club

Thanks for this!!!

So:
  • 2017 Epiphone VP 10 15/16" 14 11/16”
  • 2023 Epiphone 64: 10 3/4", 14 9/16"
To those of you that have both, do you think the slight difference in pickup placement or the actual pickup(s) construction is why the ‘64 sounds like it has better lows?

I will be able to answer this question tonight.
It's a contributing factor, at least.

My original '76 Bird came with a case identical to yours when I bought it in the 80s. The '77 I currently own came with a case just like my 2013 Anniversary edition (white fur interior) and it's rock-solid.
IMO, those 2013s are the Cadillac of Thunderbird cases. Henry got a lot of grief. But he did some great things over the years.

The pickups are different between the two versions, the Epi '64 has a better bas/lo-mid response. They are not branded as 760 either.

One of the reasons that I bought the broken ‘64 is to get the pickups, knowing they are not 760’s, it gives me an option for my white VP. I also now have a genuine Epiphone branded gig bag for my VP, and some other extra parts I’m hoping will solve a minor problem on my Greco.

I actually like my VP with the 760’s. It’s a nice difference from my Gibsons. I think the strings are a good match for the pickups as well. But, a little more low end could be even better, so now I can try these new Epiphone pups.

I have very little experience with the 2013 cases since I very rarely take them out of the house, but the Thunderbirds themselves from that year, in my opinion, are just perfect. Practically flawless.

Ok, took the 300 and 500 to church. Both have some buzz, the 300 noticeably has more. Seems to get louder at higher volumes. Both do most buzz with the tube on. Found my old seems to get into creamy OD easier, which is not what is supposed to happen with the improved tube stage on the IVs. In a live setting I would hardly ever, if ever notice the buzz on the 300, but at home it's annoying and is likely going back. Really, really hate that. Sounded really good and I got a great deal. No one has one around here to see how normal my buzz level is. Not drastically more than the 500, but definitely more. While there I fired up the Ampeg, not the slightest sound at idle.

@TBird1958 Before I box it up, can you confirm yours is quite when unmuted and and a bass connected? Even so, what Chuck and Miles said just sounds right about sending it back. Hard to not follow such informed advise.

So, what's the wager?
Every cow and dog you own and every deer, snake, turkey, skunk, chipmunk I own. Then after hearing you will be shy some animals and some brain cells and can at that one one of life's regrets. Especially the brain cells and the sounds. especially the sounds.
I'll take my beef and new pets shipped UPS and not FedMess please. :roflmao:
