Thunderbird Club

You'll need a long 1/8" (or so) bit so you can get a good angle without your drill chuck hitting the body. It's not far from the cavity to the treble side insert.
Yessir... I was actually thinking that drilling from the post hole to the cavity would maybe be 'easier' - bigger target - if the small diameter allows for adequate angle without the bit scraping the opposite side.
Heavy tape protection is a must.

I think that’s what some people don’t get by rolling off lows, not only are you protecting the speakers, you actually gain a little volume, really I should say headroom.
Not to mention clarity in tone.
But you get it.
That's part of why the Ampeg 210AV cabs work. They naturally roll off lows. And are also not super efficient so the amp is cranked a little more.
If I'm in a big room or outdoors, the sound person will fill in the lows for FOH with the PA.

This 60's Epi is at GC priced at $629 . I paid the -10% clearance price, so a good discount but no return. I'll get it cleaned up and post a better pic...where can I get a gig bag?

Does anyone here have any interest in a pair of TB+ pickups?

I have an original neck pickup out of my ‘97 Gibson and a brand new Gibson “Thunderbird Modern” that I recently bought. The original’97 bridge pickup was bad when I bought the bass. I bought the new “Modern” just a month or two ago ($110) so that I had a working pair to put in my EB. It solved the problem I had in the EB, but I wasn’t happy with the tone (I’m basically not a fan of the TB+, I much prefer the vintage style both for tone and aesthetic).

They both read around 9.75 DCR.

$75 plus shipping.

Help! This Epi is isted at GC as a 60's & priced at $629 . With the strap over the bout it balances ok. Is this a good Bird?

They usually balance well with a decent strap. Some do place the strap over the bout. I don’t. They were $749 new. Not a great price for a used one when you can get a new Epi ‘64 for $849. Many prefer the pickups in the ‘Epi ‘64. They’re different than what came in the original VP and the 60’s. A bit more on the bottom end. Also, GC is famous for mixing up models. Confirm what it is by getting the serial number and running it. Good luck!

Totally makes sense.
And from some vids you posted playing through those 2-210AV’s.
I was more then impressed.

Correct on the VP. I just want to add a mudbucker into one of my favorite sounding birds to give even more tonal possibilities. That way I can better channel my inner Jack Bruce, however poorly that IJB may play in comparison to the Real Deal. The other pickups would be unscathed.
Did something similar with my Silver Goth a few months back. Used a DiMarzo One pickup in the Mudbucker position. It’s not the same as using an EB clone pickup, a bit more range on the DiMarzio. And I used an Aguilar OBP-2 preamp with an added Dingwall four way selector switch to maximize tonal options. Sounds great!

The pic was taken prior to adding the four way knob.

Here’s a couple sound clips…
Mudbucker solo - bass neutral, treb max

Center and Bridge mix - bass neutral, treb max

All pickups on - bass neutral, treb neutral

I routinely cut the bottom end with a HPF and sometimes EQ if that isn't enough.

I have HPF’s immediately after my tuner on all my boards (1 at each rehearsal space, one at home, one for live).

I recently had this made by Sine Effect:

IMG_7052.jpeg

Always on HPF/LPF with adjustable gain setting inside, 18db/octave (his standard ones are set at 24db, and the commons ones, such as Broughton are at 12db). Pre-set for 3db makeup gain. I have yet to experiment with it, but the plan is to use it on my live board, just to dial out the sub 35hz and over 5-6khz. The HPF currently on my live board is his H24, also modified to work at 18db instead of 24. His standard ones have switches, but I really do nor need the switch.

It’s why I still very much like the 212AV.
Even though it’s ported, the lows roll off at around 71Hz.
So even as a 4ohm cabinet, it’s also not the most efficient.
But it does give it the feel and sound of a sealed box.

If I could only afford a Berg NV610.
But of course I’d have no need for one.

Thing that would make the most sense for me is to just get another Eich 112XS.

Then I’d have a 4ohm system.

This is very likely my favorite cab. It’s a perfect match for the newer re-issue v4b. It has all the bottom I need, even in lower tunings, and combined with that head, the mids and higher mids come through.

And it’s not too big, nor too heavy.

Still, I’d love to find some neo drivers that would not change its basic tonal qualities, power handling, or efficiency (or even better, improve them).

I couldn't get the necessary headroom with that setup, but we have 3 guitars in our band :woot:

Did a short notice, one-off trio gig last night, no set list, just shooting from the hip for about four hours. Really fun, the guitar player just kept starting tunes and there we went. I knew all but a couple- that were in the library but not in the hands.
Again I came away realizing my Classic Pro is the best player in the stable. Wearing it close to the knees these days, lol, super-natural. Love that bass.

I think any new speakers will absolutely change all the characteristics.

And as you said. Would need to be compatible with that box.

I’m sure it’s doable.
But would take a bit of research.
And could be costly.
