Thunderbird Club

My 2008 Gibson TBird - as a longtime Fender guy I have been totally surprised by the playability and sound of this bass. And nothing looks cooler!

I was introduced to Ryche through Kerrang! just prior to the release of the Ep. I walked into a local record merchant and he was cranking a great song on the system, I said, "Who is this?" and he said Queensryche. SOLD! Grabbed Warning when it came out, saw them open for KISS and was solidly hooked. Was a diehard fan up until Empire which kind of left me a little disappointed although that tour gave us O:M live in its entirety. As the years passed and Chris DeGarmo left then Geoff Tate started steering the band way off track, my interest faded quickly. Saw them in 2005 opening for Judas Priest and was horribly disappointed. It wasn't until things got so bad the 3 remaining originals canned his ass after finding Todd LaTorre. My interest was renewed and have been catching their shows every time they come around.

There are a couple of Husker Du show videos on youtube that I was at. The first, was at Love Hall, 1983. I was, I guess, 16 at the time and went with my older brother. The show was great but looking at it now its is pretty crazy. Pretty much total anarchy. No stage set up, no real PA, no stage security. The building it was in was a 3 or four story row style home. The top two floors had burned and soot would rain down as bands played and people moshed etc. When you left and blew your nose or spit, everything was black......

The second video was at the "West Side Club" which was the basement of a row home where DJ's from Drexel Universities radio station (WKDU) lived. When bands came through Philly they would often have shows in the basement. IIRC correctly somewhere in the video I am standing behind Greg Norton's Amp. He was using a Gibson Victory bass t the time. Kind of funny to see you 17 year old self staring back you through a computer!

We opened for them a second time on their final tour at Temple University in Philly. They did not seem to bee super happy as a group and not long after they broke up. The show was great though.

The coolest thing for me was that I got to meet a lot of the people whose records I owned and loved.

Yep, they played everything that you wanted to hear. There were some interesting covers. The playing was tight - clean and sober makes a big difference. Nobody interacts with Axl on stage making me think that they get along for the tour sake, but nowhere close to friendly.

And you have to see Slash before he dies.

They are Roto 66s that the original owner had on the bass. I exchanged them for a set of TI Jazz Flats I've had laying around for awhile and I was shocked at how good they sound. Rotos are my favorite round but these were a year old so I figured what the hell, may as well try the TIs. I had no expectation of them sounding good on the TBird but the combination is noticeably better than other basses I've tried them on (Jazz, P, MusicMan). To my ears the TI / Thunderbird combination is perfect.

I have Ernie Ball cobalt flats on one of my 'Birds. That's a good combination, too. I didn't like TI Jazz Flats on a Ric that I had for a while and haven't tried them on a 'Bird. Maybe it's time to try them.

Funny thing about them. I have them on a 'Bird that has Chinabucker pickups, and some days it sounds amazing. Other days it just goes splat. I think it may be a volume issue. Sometimes louder really is better. It has to compete with three guitars who don't necessarily respect the sonic space of the bass guitar, and when I turn down, it tends to disappear. But, then any bass tends to disappear in that kind of mix. Even the Precision had some issues unless it was wearing completely dead Sadowsky flats and had a foam mute stuffed under the ashtray. That didn't so much cut as bludgeon its way through like a heavy footed drummer can with a tuned down bass drum. I have found that EQing for low mids is one way to deal with the guitar thicket. It's always a little different, even if everything seems the same.

The 'Bird takes a little volume to sound it's best.

For those of you who have replaced your pickguard and put on a Thunderbird logo, how secure is the logo? I'm extremely disappointed in the new pickguard I got from the luthier. I was told their supplier makes them with the logo, so I was excited. Turns out the luthier got a Thunderbird logo sticker and applied it herself after the fact. It doesn't look great (one side thicker than the other) and I could peel up a corner with my fingernail. I was also charged extra for that sticker. It's not worth fighting it since in the grand scheme of things, but I'm pretty angry about it and will not go back to them. So either I try that girl in Germany again or just try and do it right this time, but no sure how much better the application is of the logos.
