Thunderbird Club

I just bought the classic and hope to at least jam with it tomorrow night. It's bedroom tone is not to my liking and I worry it's too aggressive for the bulk of stuff I do.Lots of British Invasion, 70's classic rock, blues and country....

Does Lynyrd Skynyrd count as classic rock? Their first big tour with the Who was when I first decided that I wanted a Thunderbird. Leon played the crap out of that and it sounded awesome. (I don't recall if that was all he played that night, but he definitely played it.)

John Entwhistle (the Who), Gene Simmons (Kiss), and Tom Hamilton (Aerosmith) also used Tbirds for some biggies in the 70s.

Granted they were all Gibsons, but the tone isn't *that* different.

Interestingly, John Entwhistle was playing Thunderbirds on the Quadrophenia tour that Skynyrd opened for. So both bands were Thunderbird-intensive that night!

Which night? 1973-Nov-27; Atlanta, GA; The Omni. We had cheap seats but moved in fairly close. We had to move a couple of times when seat holders showed up, but eventually settled for the duration- still up close.

Speaking of which, a few months ago we discussed that bass. It's not a 76, it a 1990's natural/walnut finish. I emailed the store about it and they decided not to reply. TODAY I emailed customer service about it and got a response, saying they will notify the store.

Yeah.. i saw it months ago, I was surprised it wasn't fixed yet....

I have noticed most cover bands don't get the bass line even close to Leon's...guy was a monster player/writer

Ahh yes...a "1976" "Korina" t-bird for 3200 clams....I'll take it ! (not)

Nice to see they're really up on things there at GC

You are one of us. No need to be humble in here.
Thanks... BTW the emoji of the smiley face laughing so hard it's crying didn't show up in my post the way I typed it. I was trying to be funny/sarcastic with my "honored & humbled"-ness but without the emoji I guess I sounded like I take myself way too seriously. Hahaha :)

I realized another reason I love the Thunderbird that's probably not too standard. Left-handed FSOs I think tend to look awkward. The Thunderbird's body shape doesn't really look "backwards", and even people I've played with haven't even realized right away I was playing left-handed. That I find hard to believe, but it's happened more than once.

I'm out near Pontiac. Motorcity guitar in Waterford has several birds including a Gibson and a studio as well as epis
The Guitar Center over here has had the same bolt-on Epi with a ski jump neck on it for sale for years... literally! A couple of used ones have come & gone over the past year... but that same crappy new one still hangs. When I asked them if they planned to get any of the new VPs in, they said quite simply, "no". I offered up a polite and contained rant about what it was, and why they should... to which they responded, "yeah... but nobody around here buys them". Then he pointed at the sad, neglected bolt-on that was hanging on the wall & said, "We've had that one for years". Total headsmack moment! It was then that I realized I was talking to a tree stump with sideburns & a name tag.

Excellent! I'll use that. And call his jeans 'slacks'.

LOL - I can hear it now. Kat and "Him Indoors" out At the local guitar shop trying different basses and Kat turns to hubby and says, "honey I'd ask you to hold my purse for a minute while I try this 'guitar' but I'm concerned it might clash with your slacks and blazer, do you mind?":roflmao::roflmao::roflmao:

Actually, Entwistle was playing FenderBirds by then, custom Peter Cook made bodies, maple Fender P necks, 60s Gibson pickups and bridge/tailpieces. He gave Leon one of them at the end of the tour.

The basses played on Quadrophenia were FenderBirds.
