Thunderbird Club

Very generous :)

It’s way easier to get a great bass sound with one track than it is guitar

Back in the days when I was annoying ... ... ... and used to have a full stereo rig, we played a large venue once and I had 2 DI feeds from the preamps and 2 mics -- I thought I was flash as anything!

There are three T Birds I like ‘better’ than the VP. In no particular order.
1. Cataldo, exactly the way you want it.
This will cost 3x what you paid for a VP, minimum, but they’re also that good.
2. Used Gibson- replace stock pickups, with Thunderbuckers, Lollars or Lulls. Better than a VP, at least twice the price, probably more.
3. Mike Lull- full custom goodness. Probably 4-5x the price of a VP.

Duke - thank you for tips
All pretty amazing basses but those Mike Lull basses...DAAAMMMNNNN GIRL! Those are sexy
The research continues......

Boy my wife is gonna hate you guys. So I have been digging into the VP, love the white. Several videos to get a feel for the sound, rock solid reviews for the most part. This may be exactly what I am looking for.
Hey I work hard, make decent money...pretty sure I deserve this step up. Any gotchas or things I should look out for if I go on this hunt?
If you're buying new, check out Sweetwater, they usually have a good selection and list the weights. The VP weighs in anywhere from the high 7 pound range to the low 10 pound range. General consensus is the lighter ones sound even better than the heavier ones. Mine is just over 8 pounds and sounds fantastic. If you normally transport your basses in a case be sure to buy one with the bass, the VP is a long bass and will fit in very few hard or soft cases. The factory strings are very nice but had more top end than I like (might be perfect for you) so I switched to Cobalt flats and they sound phenomenal. The used VPs are holding their value very well. Don't expect to save more than about a hundred bucks by going used.
Good luck with the hunt.

Fancy!

Have you looked into the Shure KSM 313? Some weird new substance in place of the ribbon. Tech that Shure took after their purchase of Crowley & Tripp. Clips I’ve heard are really impressive, but it’s quite expensive. I don’t know enough about that sort of thing, but the ‘ribbon’ supposedly never loses its shape and it seems like really great tech.

I've had dogs since I can remember. Two years ago I got me a little yorkie mix bitch from the shelter and although VERY good around my grandson she literally goes feral when confronted or getting near her food.....you never know what you get with rescue dogs...

That’s a fact! I’ve had a few. One sent me to the hospital in an ambulance and I had to get a whole bunch of stitches, couldn’t walk or play bass for awhile. The crazy part is he wound up becoming my favorite dog I ever had :)

(Quietly) That could be arranged.

A friend of mine named his cat Elf. Stands for Evil Little Fvck.

Mine, on the other hand, is literally the sweetest, most gentle cat I've ever known. She'll also wait for me outside the bathroom.

One of my cats will wait in the sink. Snapped the pic mid yawn.

Live in a van for 35 years, play thousands of shows, play on as many records as you can, produce a couple that do well and be nice to everyone you meet, because you never know :)
Just generally good advice that. Except for the part about living in a van (down by the river). Do what you love, do it well, learn new skills, and be nice to people.

I took my series 3 Bachbird to rehearsal the other night and it didn't disappoint. Big and powerful the bass sounded monstrous. It is loaded with a Dimarzio Model G under a chrome cover and is decked out with my pickguard, tug bar and tail piece. I love the cherry finish and the mother of pearl dots on this bass. My favorite of the three Bachbirds I own.

Just like racing sponsorships. I got tires at half price, which on a 600 meant something like $300 per race weekend instead of $600. Which just goes to show that you could be spending money on worse things than Cloud mics.
Blown alcohol race engines go through a set of spark plugs PER PASS! Crankshaft bearings every 15 passes. Never mind the fuel itself

Thanks, Mark! Actually around twice as much as VP street price for a single pickup Cataldo when you factor in free shipping, no tax, and included case.

I have not tried a Shire KSM 313. The price is higher than my mediocre playing skills and recording capability warrant, unfortunately. I sure would love to try one, though. That doggone missing rich uncle has failed me again!

Well, were you flash as anything? Being annoying is ok if you earn the right.

There is another reason to stick to sport bikes. You get corners to play in, getting fuel mileage down to around 15 mpg means you are flying, and you have to rebuild the suspension a few times per season. Oil and tires every weekend if you have serious power. Tires a couple times a season if you ride an SV 650, which doesn't have the same kind of power, but turned out to be a whole lot more fun for a slowish rider like me. Now, I just ride on the street. It is even cheaper! The Triumph gets close to 40 mpg in bad traffic and tires last a few years. Hmmm.... Maybe I can talk myself into spending the racing money on a KSM 313. This club never fails to enable! Brilliant! I like the way you think, Vince.
