Thunderbird Club

I’m all for adding a variant with a “modern” sound, but (1) keep the original version as well and (2) do something that lets me tell them apart visually- pickup shape, headstock flip, control layout, whatever.
Yeah. There’s certainly a place for vintage and modern, like that Simmons version. I’d play ‘em all.

It's been a while since I was in these parts but I've been lurking for a couple weeks and enjoying all the beautiful birds, so I thought I'd introduce myself. I've been a bird fan since 1979, and got my first (a black '76) in 1982.

My old bandmates and I got a drummer on Fiverr and threw this together as a tribute for Syl last week. Though my bass part was recorded months ago. It just took a while to get the rest done; don't look too close at my mimed video clip though, because it's obvious I'd forgotten the nuances of the part by last weekend! I know Sami used a Jazz bass in this era of the Dolls, but Arthur is seen with a bird in a lot of the old clips, so this seemed more appropriate.

Awesome! Nice to see you here George!
I've known George since the wild and wooly days of The Dudepit, which was a pretty unhinged place! Over the years many Birds have graced his collection including this one that our mutual friend Uwe owns.

Definitely interested in the new NR. The logo stamped on the headstock isn't perfect, but I can live with it.

I bet the painted Gibson on the headstock is in direct response to people slapping Gibson TRC's on VP's. Of course I realize that won't stop it from happening with plenty of aftermarket options available but maybe Gibson will be doing the painted Gibson on the R's as well. On second thought, who the hell knows what they're thinking. :banghead::banghead::banghead:

That sounds so....logical. Now who's giving them too much credit?:roflmao: This is true and confused me when I got the '06. Why alter what was not a problem? Not to mention PUs that sound little like what people have come to love and expect. Who intentionally messes up a perfect thing? Oh yeah, those who think they are really clever......but are not (Dunning-Kruger effect at play I suspect).

Maybe it's simply because times have changed. People have gotten much more into the fetishizing of guitars where as at one time they were approached as instruments to be played and mostly professionally. (more akin to tools of the trade) There were less players, less people buying instruments and brands usually produced a standard and deluxe model and that was that. There were a few pro musicians (John Entwistle/Steven Stills to name a couple) who amassed huge collections of rare/vintage guitars but it just wasn't like today where many people own many guitars/basses. I guess what I'm saying is such details have become an obsessive focus today.

Earliest mainstream (comedic) sign of that fetishizing was seen in Spinal Tap.

It would take a brave experimenter but it's possible the hs face could be wet-sanded with emory cloth (using a wood block to keep it flat) to remove the Gibson (stamp?/decal?) w/o breaking through the finish. It could then be buffed back to a gloss sheen and a tr cover w/Gibson installed. But having said that, I'd have to see one in person before I could determine how it is applied.

Many animals are tasty, but I dislike deer. I hardly ever like it, but had chilli and summer sausage with jalapeños that were both really good.
Lean meats like Venison, Moose, Bison, Elk taste great when not-over cooked. Too many people over-cook and ruin them. Rare or medium rare is best.
Over cooking is a big factor. That said, an equally big contributor to taste when eating wild meat (especially deer and elk) is where you harvest it from.

Animals that graze on scrub brush, bark, twigs and weeds are going to taste gamey. That's largely what you get when you hunt in the woods. If you hunt near farm land where there's wheat or corn for the deer to eat they will taste completely different.

Some of the worst venison I've ever had was from SoCal where there's an abundance of scrub brush and tumble weeds to feed on. Some of the best was from Nebraska where they consumed a lot of corn.

I don't think I'd ever mess with a headstock decal, just sends to many red flags up on a resale. What I would consider is painting the truss rod cover to match the headstock so it blends in and doesn't stick out like a sore thumb. Then the Gibson name would look like it belonged where they put it.

You're giving the suits too much credit. I really doubt decisions have anything to do with anything other than the bottom line. But addressing your take, if I had sway at say, Rickenbacker.., I'd push for a redesign of their bridge. I have seen that they actually did offer this on a recent signature bass (the one with TWO of their (poorly designed) pu covers and (aesthetically debatable) green block neck inlays), but not their high-priced/money-maker standard 4001 models. So commended for staying with the "original" theme Ric.. but...not so much for refusing to fix its (poor) bridge design.

Actually, their redesigned bridge is now standard on the 4003 and 4003S models I believe.

Interesting how the angle of observation affects perceived headstock size...

That it does. Here's a pic I took a while back with my VP next to my short scale Bronco...

Maybe I'm just a bit thick, but I never really ever look at the VP and think yikes that's a huge headstock. To my eyes it looks about in proportion to the rest of the bass. It's not until I hold it up against a different bird that it's obviously much larger. Spot the VP...

Then there's my FrankenGoth with the headstock that I reshaped to give it the flipped and much smaller look, alongside the much larger VP...

Sooooo true, everyone knows a 13 headstock (center) is about 2/3 the size of the 60’s and that a BaCH hs is bigger than all of them....love every photo angle of TBirds, specially NRs...
