Too much Maple?

Refinish?

Never been a fan of that bass, Terra Firma something or other. Ibanez maybe? The ones I've seen usually have a darker body, and with that extra upper I agree that there's not enough contrast there/ Pickup covers are too blond, and the whole thing just looks sort of washed out to me.

And you said you received it, as in a gift? Possibly traded for it? If it was a gift, that's a nice present for someone to give you, they're fairly expensive IIRC.

Maybe instead of them having to refinish it, maybe they could spray some darker tint or trans on it. Sure does have some awesome figure in the maple, and a slightly darker color might make the figure pop better.

Whilst this bass is pretty much as far removed from what interests me, I think that it looks good for what it is.
When talking maple, I think humanbase.
For me they are the company with the best all maple basses.

Maple tends to be a little too heavy for me when the whole instrument is made from it.
In terms of looks...I think it really can look excellent!

I don't know that I'd refinish that gorgeous top, but I do like gold hardware; and to change out the p-up covers, as I think that's what kinda takes it too far. While more black hardware would break it up, to me it would feel like too much hard contrast, but shiny gold would pop in a balanced way, i think. Even gold p-pup covers might be nice, as well as a matching truss rod cover. It would add a soft bling.

In other cases of too much maple, the best contrast is more bacon... and throw on another pancake or two. MORE BACON !!!! :drool:

I would also leave it as is and see if it grows on you. I've had basses that I didn't care for the looks of initially that I wound up liking. I would be reluctant to make any major changes to a bass, you never know how that could affect playability or sound.

It's the pick up covers and knobs I think. Love wood but also enjoy the contrast with hardware.

This is a Schecter Guitar Research Riot 5 Session Bass, IMO it's way to much all maple looking, it just don't look like a Bass I would want, looks wise. On the other hand it has a maple neck, maple fret board, solid Mahogany body with Swamp ash top and swamp ash head stock top. It has ACTIVE EMG pickups a 40DC bridge pickup and a 40P5 neck pickup for a pretty sweet Bass all and all.

I actually like that one, probably because of the body shape breaking it up by how the light hits it, as well as the fret marks and the mild differences from the different woods used, lighter tight grained maple and the slightly orange-ish relaxed grain of the top and head stock. I like the cut aways, too. With the OP bass, I've never been too keen on that big chunk of wood on the upper bout running up the neck, I think that feeds into the "too much maple" for me as well, but this Schecter has nice flow and motion, despite being so natural; and the black hardware and accents are nicely distributed from bottom to top. -- But I can understand it not suiting your tastes.

It's totally different, but it kinda triggered a warm fuzzy memory of a good friend's old maple Gibson Grabber - a fond memory. Nothing alike, but the maple and black scheme - and the Grabber's honkin' big black face plate... Ahhhh a bass for every taste :)
