Venting - LS can't handle playing in a bar that serves shots.

I agree. And to condemn the guy after One incident, I wonder if the OP has demons of his own that he Exorcises onto others....
I didn't really read it as the OP condemning him, but more "damn that was frustrating" and "how would you experienced folks handle it?" with a touch of "do you think this is likely to continue?" I'm sure the OP understands that nobody here can possibly answer those two questions as well as he can, but people's opinions and why they hold those opinions can surely help him formulate the best strategy when applied with what he knows about the singer. Obviously he isn't looking for some group response he can blindly apply to people none of us know, just data to help him formulate a sound strategy.

It may seem like condemning the guy, but there's no point in blindly supporting every stupid thing someone does.

Can I just say here that one drunken episode doesn't necessarily make someone an alcoholic?

For whatever reason, the guy was in the mood to go overboard that night. At best it represents a temporary lack of self-control that's fueled by the presence of his family who are encouraging him to party hard.

Does it happen all the time? If so, you have a problem, because HE has a problem. If not, you have a situation. You just need to talk to the guy and let him know it was probably worse than he thought it was.

This, although I'd probably first talk to the band members who have known him longer. If he is an alcoholic who fell off the wagon, the band can adopt measures to help him stay sober. If this is a very occasional thing, a quiet word and establishment of some band rules should suffice, or other members can sing the third set. But I'd bet the LS remembers only the good parts. Might be worth letting him have the occasional off night and enjoy his shining night - as long as he doesn't start believing he sings better when he's had "a few drinks". Of course, the OP might not want to be in THAT band, which is fine.

This thread. Oh boy. First time Ive logged into Tb in years.

You all are freaking insane, off your rocker, no where near living in reality, need therapy, definitely need to quit projecting your bad histories on others.

I'll just say it nice and ineloquently. Youre not as important as you think, to the world, to your band, or to the instrument of bass. No one will care if you "walk" so please for the love of God walk and quit whining.

For the 10% of tb with out glaring mental issues I miss you guys.

For the other 90% Jesus christ you need help. Professional help. You are off your rockers.

in the history of talkbass i think this is tops for asinine and insensitive in a single comment.

hey guys the cure for depression is "be happy!"

ridiculous.

Hardly - the OP wanted to know what to do. The drinking of another is not the way to approach the problem. The OP doesn't want to go to gigs , be professionally humiliated and have a horrible musical time.

the point is there is no point talking to someone who gets Sh.t faced at a gig. He should see if it happens again or from time to time but having a discussion - worrying about the drinker's health or appealing to their sense of fairness and to think of those who are affected by such behaviour is a waste of time.

I have played with many drinkers over 40 years, some are not alcoholics but they figure they are in a bar and they get to drink.

The discussion is not "are you OK" or "are you going to drink frequently - yes or no" - all a waste of time. Any discussion is I am having a crappy time at gigs when you drink - full stop. Who cares whether it is alcoholism or a drunken gigger.

Sensitivity - anyone who comes to a gig I arrange and then professionally humiliates me with unprofessional behavior and makes music a chore - ask yourself - who was insensitive?

You have it upside down and backwards.

Um, don't know if you saw the part where he said "all of them drink." Also, OP's been in the band 3 years and this was the first time the singer did this.

Armchair psychology sucks.

And... those facts were not in his initial post.

My response is to someone else about my insensitivity - which was totally off topic (my insensitivity - how insensitive I must have seemed, when.....) , and tried to get him back on topic - as always just doing my best.

I never use effects, I don't like effects, -and as a result I am never on effects threads.

You don't like this thread … you created a thread where you say you don't like this type of thread... and yet you are on this thread. And apparently read all 14 pages.

What might an armchair psychologist say about that you figure?

He or she might say I hate and love trainwreck threads. And I do. One of the rare times an armchair psychologist would be right.
