When tattoos make you look ridiculous

i think your example is good, but just a little off. I would compare tattoos to skating in general. Skateboarding is big right now. It doesnt mean that Rollerblade doesnt sell half a million skates a year. People still skate. Little kids rock some inlines at the rollerdome. Your example would be more accurate if you compaired aggressive inline skating to say tribal tattoos. Tattoos have fads that go in and out (chinese lettering, ugh!) but tattooing has been around for ages. I have a few. I have a crappy tribal that i got in 2000 cause it was cool. I dont regret it, but i am having a hard time thinking of what i can have done next that will work with it.

ok, point-
It has to make sense. F--K THE POLICE on your head will not get you a job anywhere. Having that band on your arm probably wont stop you from getting say, the highest paying mechanic job. Remember folks, not everyone wants to be a suit. I bet the guy that fixes your golden toilet probably has a few tats.

I agree. In fact my 84 year old grandpa has about 4 tats. He was in the Navy in the 40s-50s and he has 2 swallow tattoos on both sides of his chest, an anchor, and I forget what else, done with the old fashioned navy blue ink. Thats what all men did in the Navy in those days. Sailors got them for proof of the Navy and would have a swallow tattoo put on their chest after completing 5,000 sea miles and one on the other side after completing 10,000 sea miles. They are a symbol or honor, dignity and trust. So is my grandpa a lower form of life? Absolutely not, but unfortunately some people think that way.

Geesh people, get over it.

Many people are going to have a rude awakening in another 15-20 years when having a tat is the norm. It's having less of stigma as the years pass as people realize it's RIDICULOUS to judge people based on them.

Oh, I got a sleeve tattoo 40 years ago, when I was 19, slim and in great shape. I was into ________, which I don't really care about anymore. As a matter of fact I no longer care about ________ in the least bit so I'm kind of glad all the intricate lining turned into this messy blob on my big, fat arm. It's wierd, cuz I was really into _______ until I turned ___.

Well...

I work as a software engineer, for a utility company by day!

I have two tats, & work out at the company gym... anyone who works out there has seen them. I've only had 1 or 2 negative comments, & they've been from uptight religious types.

Bottom line, if you dont want one... dont get one. If you WANT one, then get one. Part of the decision should be whether you care, how it maybe affect how OTHERS perceive you. I made sure mine are mostly NOT visible, because utiliity companies tend to be stodgy & conservative.

Who cares, some people like tats, some dont.

I like tattoos, I have one, with plans on getting more in the future. You dont like them, I dont care, because I do. The one I have now I got three years ago, and its not likely to ever be something I'll regret. I'll admit, Ive seen a lot of people with tats that I think are stupid, its my opinion on the matter. Im sure some people would think that the tats I have or want are stupid. Fine, thats their prerogative.

But this whole debate on tattoos is really stupid, and I think this thread should be closed as its pretty much the equivalent of discussing abortion rights.

having read your message and agreeing with your point, i am going to go ahead and do it any way cause i'm new and fancy joining in the conversation:

So i've been thinking about getting a tattoo lately i was thinking about getting my bands logo (a crown) like on my left peck above my heart, is that tacky? i didn't think it was. Also i was thinking about a bass clef but i couldn't decide where, any suggestions?
