your progression on amps

These sorts of threads are a fun little mental exercise.

Let's see...

Gorilla little bass combo
Peavey 115 combo, everybody's had one and most liked em

Then I got a job.

Eden (WT400?) + Hartke 410 + 115, not the transporters

Then I got a better job. Can no longer keep track of
amp/cab combinations, changed too fast.

Ampeg SVP Pro / Carvin DCM (1200?) / Mesa Strategy 400
Mesa Boogie 400+ :)
Ashdown RPM-1 (1 regular, 1 John E. signature) / Mesa Strategy 400
SWR Mo Bass

I still visit the regular preamp from time to time at the
GC I sold it to. They gave me more than I paid and want more than it was new.

Peavey Classic 400
Genz Benz GBE 600 :)
G-B Series 1 combo :)
Fender 400PS :hyper:
Sunn 300T :)
Marshall Super Lead 100 - great bass amp!! :)

Cabs, ugh...
Besides the Hartkes; Mesa: 410, 215 (2) Powerhouse 1000
SWR Henry 8X8
Cerwin Vega B36MF
Trace Elliot 1018
Ampeg IsoVent
Bergantino: HT210, HT115
2 Bergantino 115 subs (and I'm not even a lawyer) :)
Peavey 412
Peavey 1820 (2) :p
Hughes & Kettner Triamp 412, great with the Marshall for recording twangy old Who sounding stuff. :)
LAB 215, put the speakers from the 4 ohm Mesa 215 above in it. ;)

and other stuff I forgot. Mostly in the order I bought it. Put smilies next to the stuff I still have.

1977 (junior high): Fender Musicmaster Bass amp, 12 Watt tube

1978 - 1980: Various school-owned amps, including Traynor 88-Watt tube head on top of 18" folded horn, and a big Yamaha 1x15 solid state guitar combo.

1980: My first real amp, a Peavey "Centurion" head on top of a DIY speaker with an EVM-15B driver. In my ignorance, I had no idea that the Peavey would only deliver 65 Watts to my 8-Ohm speaker. For rock gigs, I added a second DIY 15" cab, borrowed from a friend.

1990: Tired of lugging the big amp to rehearsal, built a homemade 60-Watt "practice" combo from surplus electronic parts and a Pyle 12" driver. At the same time, I started playing jazz gigs. The DIY combo quickly became my main amp.

1998: GK MB150E combo.

2005: Homemade preamp, and a couple different DIY speakers, ostensibly built as extension cabs for the GK.

Today: Finally got my homemade 130-Watt switching power amp working. Now I am ready to start testing a totally DIY bass amp rig. The fun begins.

Fun thread. Had to do some thinking for this one...

-Fender Bassman 60
-Peavey Mark III head and homemade 1x15 cab
-Peavey Mark III head w/ Peavey 410TX
-Hartke 3500 w/Peavey 410TX
-Hartke 3500 w/ Peavey 410TX and SWR S.O.B
-Hartke 3500 w/Swr Goliath III and SOB
-Ampeg SVT-IIP/Mackie 1400i w/SWR Goliath III and SOB
-Demeter VTB201s/Mackie 1400i w/SWR Goliath III and SOB
-Demeter VTB201s/Mackie 1400i w/SWR Goliath III/Bag End S-18D
-Mesa 400+ w/SWR Goliath III and SOB
-Mesa 400+ and Ampeg 8x10
-Kern IP-777/Mackie 1400i w/SWR Goliath III and SOB
-Kern IP-777/QSC Plx-3002 w/SWR Goliath III and SOB
-Kern IP-777/QSC Plx-3002 and Acme Low B-4
-Kern IP-777/QSC Plx-3002 Bergantino HT112&Ex112
-Ashdown RPM-500 Evo II and Bergantino HT112&Ex112

whew... more amps/cabs than i thought and i still have most of them for some reason.

WAY back there (because I knew totally NOTHING about bass equipment) I first got a Gregory POS head/cab.
Fried the speaker.
Got a (pre-CBS) Fender Bassman head 2nd hand and a friend built me a custom cab in shop into which we put two JBL D-140F (I later scored two JBL cabs -- very large studio monitor enclosures for a 15 and a horn tweeter into which I put the D-140Fs).
Sold all that before I moved to TN for awhile.
Bought a Nemesis NC-210P combo.
About two years later I bought my current Dem 201S, QSC PLX 1602 rack rig and a Bergantino HT322.
About a year later traded the Berg in on a Schroeder 410.
That's it (so far...).

I love the tone I get with this system.

I started out on a...

Carvin 1x15 combo ---> SOLD IT
Carvin Redline 600watt head with Carvin 2x10, and 1x15 ---> SOLD IT
Fender 300PS with SWR Big Foot 2x12 ---> SOLD IT
Alembic F1/SW 1200watt with two EA CXL110's ---> SOLD IT
Trace Elliot Hexa (400watt all tube)with EA VL210 ----> SOLD IT
Fender Bassman 135 (100watt all tube) with Bassman 2x15 --->still playing, but selling the 2x15 for two CXL110's :D

Crate 10 watt practice amp.
Sold/passed on crate.
Warwick Pro Fet III
SWR WM 210
Then added an SWR WM 15

Added a Mesa/Boogie 1516 cabinet
Bought a Trace Elliot V8
Sold the Mesa 1516 along with the Warwick Pro Fet III

Added a Schroeder 410.

So now I have Trace V8 + Schroeder 410. And the two SWR's that are sitting around waiting to be sold.

Phew... lets see:

1-Peavey Microbass (late 80s, early 90s model)
2-Peavey Microbass ('99/'00 model)
3-Ampeg BA-115
4-Eden D115T and GK400RB-III
5-Aguilar GS410, Eden D115T, QSC RMX1450, and GK400RB-III
6-Aguilar GS410 and Aguilar DB359
7-Cheap direct box
8-Ampeg BA-112
9-Presonus Tubepre
10-Aguilar GS410, Presonus Tubepre, and GK400RB

I've had the GS410/presonus/gk rig as a whole for probably about 3 or 4 weeks now. I'm getting rid of the presonus, since I don't really need it.

It kind of sucks that I've gone through so many different amps in only 6 years of playing. Especially since I've owned the same cab twice! People do stupid things sometimes, huh?

1. Off-brand 10 watter into two 12's better suited for guitar.
2. Black Kustom 200 w/3-15" CTS.
3. Peavey Centurion with 18" BW. Sold the cab, replaced it with a tolex Kustom loaded w/2-15" EV SRO's.
4. Traded a mic for a non-functioning Fender Super Reverb. Repaired the amp, loaded it with a JBL D-140. I used it in conjuction with #3 on the guitar player's side of the stage.
5. Ampeg B-15. The one I regret selling!
6. Ampeg V-4 to play around with. Never really gigged it.
7. Ampeg V-6B. My first solid state Ampeg. Set it on top of a Sound City 18" cabinet.

After the rocking years:
8. Ampeg B100-R
9. ART Tube Channel/Carver PM1400 into Acme B-2/B-4.

Current: iAmp 800, Thunderfunk 420, Accugroove Tri-112 and Whappo Junior.

Thanks for the fun thread. I had to jog the memory! My first electric bass experience was in 1969 when my uncle taught me to walk on his '63 Precision through his Bassman 50. He still has that rig even though his love is URB.

I started out with a Christmas present of a (CAR) Teisco bass and 15" combo, I dunno, maybe 25-40 watts? "distortion city"
from there after a year or so:
Fender Bassman w/ 2x15 cab
Sunn 200S
Sunn 2000S
Sunn Coliseum & coliseum slave into 2 2x15" & 2 1x18" cabs
Ampeg SVT x 3 w/ 6 cabs, the 2 2x15s, 2 1x18s & 2 8x10s
(monster stack in concert band)
downsized to 1 QSC2402 w/ a bunch of preamps:1 at a time-
Alembic F-1X
Demeter VTBP-201S
Ashly BP-41
Peavey Max
Eden Navigator
Ampeg SVP-Pro w/ combination of Ampeg 4x10s, 2x10s & 1x15s and Eden 2x10s and 1x15s - 8 cabs in all.
Ampeg SVT II (non-pro)a deal and sound I couldn't pass up
Ampeg SVT 2 Pro into Ampeg 4x10 & 1x15(both 4 ohms) or combination of Eden cabs 2 2x10s and 2 1x15s(8 ohms). I believe the 2 Pro is my last amp. It kicks major butt and has the Ampeg tube growl, my sound.
I still have my SVP-Pro, the SVT II and I got an Eden Metro for rehearsal. I hope my gas is gone for amps. I have pretty nice basses too but I'm always drooling for a new one. So far nothing has knocked me over like my Modulus Q6 or my MTD 635. We'll see...I sure wish Roger Sadowsky would make a 6 string, heh heh
<smiles> dD

I've had a lot of amps in my time including different Ampegs, Fenders, Marshalls, Sunns and my first, a Univox, 99% of them were tube amps. I've been using Ampeg SVT's now for close to thirty years, have three of them and feel they are the best amps going, they're reliable and sound great. I've got a few other Ampegs also but use the SVT's for playing always.

Yeah, I didn't think that any of you wanted to scroll down through a "War and Peace" sized post... :D
:D +1

If you ever have the spare time, an interesting addition to your blog would be something like "My favorite gigging bass equipment" done in a chronological fashion (maybe Part 1, Part 2, etc).

It would be something you could add to as you get to try out other gear.

I know I'd definitely give it a read. :)

That is a great idea, and one I have been thinking about for a whlie (but haven't quite found the time for). I've also been asked to put together a bit on what cabs I have found work well with tube amps, which I also think would be useful. Then, of course, there is the angle of what particular combinations work the best (IMHO, of course) together.

I really do enjoy trying out gear, analyzing it, thinking about it, writing about it, "TalkBassing" about it, etc. I just need more waking hours in a day!

Later, Tom.

Yes; I find the synergy (or lack of it) between different pieces of bass equipment very interesting -- especially when 'the whole' surpasses what you'd think 'the sum of the parts' would be.

In general, I don't think this factor is given as much consideration as it should.

Some practice amp, can't remember...

Peavy combo with a 15"

Sunn SS head with EV-B215M

Sunn power amp 600W bridged into EV-B215M with furman 3 band parametric EQ

Bag end 18 with Goliath JR, running ADA bass power amp for biamping. ADA MB1 preamp, tried Art Nightbass (returned in 30 day trial period) then Acoustic BP10

Scrapped biamping, got Crown K1 power amp, still running Bag end 18 with Hartke 410.
Soon with Hartke 4.5XL
Soon back to furman 3 band parametric eq.

Replaced furman with Eden Navigator.

Replaced bag end 18 and Hartke 4.5xl with a pair of EA VL-210's.

Along the way went through AT wireless, Nady UHF unit, finally to Xwire.

Current lineup:
Xwire to Eden Navigator to Crown K1 power amp bridged into 1 EA vl210's.
