Mild envelope filter to mimic fretless bass

... developing a fretless sound via pedals is a project. ...
...
An envelope follower with a separate chorus after it would be most convenient.

I absolutely LOVE that you're doing this project as a means to its own end.
Has too much emphasis been placed on filters, though?
While some swell pedals have been mentioned, I think that avenue hasn't been explored enough.

Boss Slow Gear and clones thereof generally won't quite cut it, IMO.
However, the EHX ATTACK DECAY pedal has recently been reissued, so I would start there. It has far more control than a Slow Gear clone.
You'll also find an ATTACK DELAY control on the EHX Microsynth, if you can get your hands on one to try.

I was at one point obsessed with swell pedals, to simulate a bowed effect (when I want a truly bowed sound, I get out my bow and play my DB, or I could try dragging my bow across a slab bass, too);
your Mwah-quest is very similar to my pernambuco-in-a-pedal project and of great interest to me as well.
From my research the main trio that caught my attention were the above mentioned EHX ATTACK DECAY, while the remaining two were the following:

VFE BUMBLEBEE
The nascence of this pedal was that of a Slow Gear, but after much tweaking of the circuit and very importantly the addition of some compression, this circuit leaves the Slow Gear and its clones at the starting line while itself is finishing the race. IMO.
Alas, I've not much info on this one.

DOD FX15
Out of production, but available used for anything between 200-400 ¢£₳₥$.
This one is manual, for each note you step on the footswitch and, depending on its settings, can outright mute or significantly lower the volume and then releasing the footswitch allows the signal to swell back to unity (can be boosted beyond unity).
THREE CONTROLS —
DECAY
ATTACK
CUT/BOOST: Noon is unity so you effectively need to set it anywhere but noon.
I've not found a demo on youtube that I like, so can't recommend one though I encourage you to explore them yourself.
The FX15 can also be modified to have a metal-pick (on a wire-tether) that when the pick makes contact with the (metal) string, it triggers the effect for you instead of trying to time your stomping around. The fettered-pick guarantees accurate release times, every time.
I've got the

DIY
All three of the above (EHX, VFE, DOD) can be made by you or a DIY-proficient friend or local hobbyist/guitar-tech willing to take on the project.

You could also build the Boss Slow Gear — if you do, Aion's Onyx has a noteworthy mod to the SG circuit:
"Release (toggle switch) sets the time constant of the “hold” on the signal, which also impacts the
onset speed of the swell. The stock position is in the middle, which is the fastest setting, while the
other two positions increase the swell time." — AIONFX
Aion has excellent documentation, as does MadBeanPedals, while PedalPCB has a PCB and great cadre of forumites to help with a build (any of the aforementioned).
You could probably add this "Release" mod to an existing SG-clone, and certainly any DIY build, but with Aion it's all ready to go.

Some additional info:

JC MAILLET’s TRIGGERED SWELL:

This is a low-distortion optically coupled Swell (volume) circuit that is foot controlled and comes with a parallel effects loop option ... it has the ability to swell the main signal and/or the signal coming back from the effects loop ... an effect (or chain) can be swelled in and mixed with the direct signal, or both can be swelled together ... one of my targetted applications is for use with a booster/filter and loud amp combination where it can be used to slowly tip things into sustained feedback and held there as long as the footswitch is ... it also does nice reverse tape effects and other morse-code type repeats that a self-triggered unit won't do ...

CONTROLS :
"on" rise-time,
"off" fall-time,
gain/vol,
mix ...
TOGGLE SWITCHES :
direct swell on/off,
three-way speed range
Possibly very FX15-like, but … I think the FX loop is the key for Maillet's, gotta add the FX loop.

"Line 6 Echo Park does a very good swell effect. It's one of the delay sounds and is imposed only on the delay signal, but if you mix to 100% wet and set the delay time very short with no repeats, you can get something very similar to a Slow Gear, without the nuisance that a Slow Gear presents. And you get a delay pedal for free! " — Mark Hammer, DIY-DOYEN
You'll also find the Echo Park Swell in Line6's M series (M5, M9, M13); I have the M5 and to me it is the most user friendly of the menu-diver pedals — I've found I'm not adept at pedals rife with submenus that force you to think like a programmer — give me tactile control-knobs, and be direct about them as much as possible. From what I've read of your quest, this describes you as well.

Maybe the Malekko Sneak Attack would work for you? I'm not familiar with the pedal, so might be way off bass, uhm, base with that suggestion.

Of course, the SWELL isn't the only aspect that defines "MWAH", so a smidge of reverb, chorus, "tape"-saturation could/should be added amongst possible other things.
The tape-saturation or some form of grit... you'd want something that's pronounced at the attack and then quickly cleans up as the note decays.
So something that lets you really fine-tune the threshold of onset of distortion.

Perhaps this is also where splitting the signal would be of benefit: the full dry signal triggers the distortion on the wet signal getting swelled up.

Maybe check out a doubling-pedal instead of chorus? In addition to chorus?
Compression: if not the VFE Bumblebee, Pigtronix's Philosopher's Tone generates a lot of sustain.
How about adding in the humble VOLUME Treadle-pedal?
An expression pedal to adjust the envelope follower to balance out faster riffs from slower passages of notes...
Slapback delay with the dry-signal muted? Can that be incorporated or work at all?
So much more to explore...

It's a juggling act for sure, each pedal-puzzle-piece has to be in balance with each other, and even then you'll likely have to adapt your playing technique to get the most Mwah out of the pedals.

Sounds like a swell project and fun challenge!

Could Use Some Help on Short Scale Flat-wound String Choice

...take a look at Jonathan Wong 458 Music's YouTube channel. He's been reviewing short scale flats, and unlike most YouTubers, he's not just raving about how amazing everything is....
Had never come across his channel before -- just watched (mostly listened) to all seven of his short-scale flat videos (thus far). Amazing stuff! Comparison clips are well done, well organized, and to the point, as are his observations about each string (I wondered how you could make a 25 minute video comparing two sets of strings, but he goes into a lot of -- IMO, relevant -- detail).

I haven't watched any of his other stuff, but subscribed to his channel, based on that.

Fender Limited Edition Player Fusion Precision Bass

Hmm... so, according the press release... if it's only designed to "serve the riff" and for playing loud music- will it explode, catch fire, or earn me a visit from guys with suits and badges if I played a counterpoint or syncopated line at a reasonable volume instead of being subservient to said riff at a volume that could strip paint? 🤔

I have so many questions about the legal portion of the warranty...

Gain vs Master settings on MarkBass combo amps

OK, harsh, but OK, free country.

To diminish my efforts into being AI-generated hurts, tho, is it because english is not my first language? Can you please forgive me, and how about belittling me in your second language over 1500 words? I just know you will fare so much better than me!

I'm trying my very best to appear elaborate enough for titans of industry such as you to take notice, sorry if my english doesn't pass the AI test. Also like how most of my gain explanations and explanations about how you actually act on stage in small to medium venues are wrong. Just wrong. Must have those experiences from somewhere else I reckon.

In fact, sound guys love you for changing your volume at the bass mid-song and who ever did not like a bit of extra white noise - just do gain as volume as well, why not, the results, hmmm, *chef's kiss*.

Also you did not answer the bloke asking for help for two years, but leap straight out of the bushes to parade and belittle an answer, instantly. Well played.

( I do not know, does my sarcasm make it across with my AI english or how are we looking there? is this really the hill you want to die on, unprovoked and unchallenged? )
Do you realize that the OP was 3 years ago? This issue was addressed back then. I'd suggest you read the entire thread before chiming in. You might learn something and save yourself the schooling you received.

Double Bass Ear training / App question

I am having issues differentiating diminished and augmented chords.

Having a guitar, keyboard, or even fretted bass...
know the chord structure is close position
diminished 1 - b3 -b5
augmented 1 - 3 - #5
play one melodically, sing it, ascending, descending.
play one harmonically - sing it, ascending, descending.
then repeat with the other.

Do that 12 times for each chord type. going in semitones till the octave repeat. (or down.. your choice)

Singing it, means you can hear it and start to understand it, and recreate it yourself without a physical instrument. Do that, and hearing it from outside will be much easier.

My take, is the apps and such are "tests", but not the study. We learn in the study, not in taking the tests. So practice with the guitar, piano + voice, then when you feel good about it, play various chords yourself harmonically, listen, then sing each note. Then when that is strong, take the app tests.
By then, the ear will have opened up enough to hear them.

There are keyboard apps available for tablets, that in certain situations can serve as a proxy for a physical digital keyboard.

TONEX Signature Bass Collection and two TONEX Bass pedals

Well, I wasn't aware that there was no balanced DI out on the Tonex. Bummer. I already sold off my Element. That would mean I would have to buy another DI to go with the Tonex for FOH. That makes this less attractive for me.
Radial stage Bug SB-2 ? I have it, its small, no battery, transformer balanced and isolated. Works always.

What are the best amps Peavey ever made?

Hehe, I siffed through the amp clubs index and found this link. Have to share it with someone who gets it. Just bought this Tour 700 head 1.5 hours ago and brought it home. Time to save up for some cabs!
Trying out for a death metal band, it was a choice between an eden 320w head or this one. For 30 CAD more picked this monster
1000012002.jpg

Am I paranoid or is this too good to be true?

Btw, I downloaded the manual for the amp and there appears to be a mistake.

It says correctly for the use of the 0dB input "Connect your bass guitar here by means of a shielded instrument cable. If your bass has active electronics or high output pickups, or if the Peak LED illuminates at low signal levels, connect your bass to the -12dB jack."

Fine and dandy .. but if you read the description of how to use the -12dB jack you get

"Connect your bass guitar here by means of a shielded instrument cable, if your bass has passive electronics or low output pickups. If the Peak LED (#3) does not illuminate at high signal levels, connect your bass to the 0dB jack."

Which seems to me to be a contradictory statement saying you should use the -12Db jack IF you indeed have passive pickups, which is all I use.

Maybe something was lost in translation. Or maybe I'm the one lost. Actually the first description applies to how to use each jack so the seond description I don't think is necessary.
You aren't understanding what's being said.

0dB input is for passive basses (and lower level active basses)

-12dB input is for active basses (and high output passives if necessary)

They are suggesting starting with the -12dB input and moving to the 0dB input if needed.

Fender AM Pro II - V-Mod 2 pickups?

This thread being resurrected is an opportunity to correct some misinformation, and update some product info:

Firstly, there was an industry wide misconception that the V-Mod II Precision pickup had AlNiCo II magnets in the E-A half, and AlNiCo V magnets in the D-G half.

In actual fact the pickup has AlNiCo IV magnets in the E-A half, and AlNiCo II magnets in the D-G half.

I'd assumed (based on the presence of several glaring errors) that the user manual was incorrect in this matter, but after I personally had several communications with Fender, they launched an investigation with their engineering department, who confirmed that the manufactured pickup is as designed, and the manual is correct in its description.

My suggestion in this thread to swap the two halves around would affect a change in tone / response, but not the expected results, as there is no AlNiCo V present.

Secondly, Fralin now offer a 5-string Precision pickup.

Headphones for the most satisfying bass tone?

I have Qudelix DACs that have the necessary DSP EQ and I got my files from the ASR website or Crinacle or an EQ plugin in my DAW. ON Windows it is APO EQ that affects the system Audioand on Mac you can get a specialized Plugin for system audio do it yourself with the default Logic Channel EQ. There is also EQ MAC for system Audio but mainly I just use my Qudelix DACs and it will get the Headphones tuning for you . When I switch to Headphones it goes through the DAC and I switch the headphone tuning through the DAC app if needed. The DAC also have a crossfeed mode so that it simulated speakers in front of me rather than 180

Crinacle is this audiophile from Singapore and he has tuned many headphones ) thousands of them ) to the idealized Harmon Curve. It makes a difference. I make some adjustments so my headphone experience is very close to the Yamaha monitors, I think he puts his tuning in Github and I think you need a 8 band Parametric EQ, so you can tune by hand and make adjustments if needed.
This is pretty interesting stuff that I wasn't aware of.
Awhile back I did read about some headphones that you could change the response of just by swapping out the earpads, and I've also read reports of people changing earpads to a different material (like from a more smooth reflective surface to something more soft and fuzzy) and it drastically changed the sound (sometimes not for the better). Of course this is not near as sophisticated as what you're writing about, but I thought I'd mention it since no one else has.

Btw, I've been using an old Austrian made pair of AKG K240 Studio (55ohms), and they sound good for bass. The isolation is not great, so they may not be good in the studio for doing vocals etc, but they work great for my late night silent bass practice.

And forgive me if changing the earpads for a different response is some sort of 'audiophile nonsense', it's just something I read about and thought it might be relevant to the conversation.

Markbass Combos

Since you mentioned a Marcus Miller version, I'd be weary that the EQ might be voiced pretty different. I briefly owned one of those 210 Marcus Miller combos, because the form factor seemed so hard to beat. The way the EQ is voiced when flat is pretty odd and dark, and the challenge was using the built in controls to try to make up for it. In the end I couldn't get a sound I was happy with.

I'd stick with their regular lineup, unless you've tried a MM version before and liked it.
That's been my experience, too. I did a comparison a long time ago:
