    Overused & trite sports phrases

" it's do or die time " i remember a few years back hearing an interview with robert smith, the all star running back for the minnesota vikings, about why he retired. he said as part of the minnesota viking public relations package, they had this program called public day ( or something...

    G&L Tribute JB-2

i've not played this one specifically, but i have played the american made g&l jb and thought it was one of the best " Jazz " basses i've ever played. that being said. i have played some of the other g&l tribute basses and found them to be great players, sound and feel wise and worth the money...

Am I odd for not wanting to gig?

i don't think your odd at all. i jam with a bunch of friends, either here at my place or at one of their places. i find it satisfying enough to enjoy what i am doing and share with some of my musical friends. we are able to play whatever we want to play in an atmosphere that encourages creativity.

SOLD Ibanez Axstar 5 String - Now open to trade offers!

one of the few regrets i have had is getting rid of my axstar back in the 80's. i had a white five string and i have big hands so i had a hard time getting used to the narrow string spacing ( i should've tried harder ) but it was a well balanced, great sounding little bass. bump for a nice bass.

Please tell me this is not a TB'er

caveat emptor i saw an ad a while back for a EBMM SUB 4 string for 1900 dollars. i showed the ad to a non musician friend and said something like " what an idiot, that is way more than the bass cost new and this is used, i guess the guy doesn't want to sell it " and my friend reminded...

Visiting SW Ontario & Toronto, where to go?

    Tapping technique question:

no you're right. the best thing to do is practice. the more you practice, the stronger your left hand will get, you'll find that your control will improve and the coordination between both hands will develop. you can add some compression. that will even out the difference between loud and...

    Dave Hope - Kansas

one of the first songs i learned as a neophyte back in the eighties was carry on wayward son. i love the bass line and play it to this day, usually by myself, solo, just 'cause i like it so much. for that matter, i taught myself to fingerpick acoustic guitar after learning kerry livgren's dust...

Tommy Emmanuel - ever hear this guitar player?

yeah i've been listening to him for 12 years or so. he's great. I have his live in st louis dvd and centre stage which is a double live acoustic set. he is a complete performer, charming, witty, and one of the best on the instrument. i have a friend who used to go down for the chet atkins...

    Jaco's best album(s)

i have more than 30 cds, either jaco's cd's or cd's that he is on including all of the live in new york club stuff. i would have to agree with the people that said his debut from 1976, weather report heavy weather ( i think my all time favorite album/cd ), joni mitchell shadow's and light (...

    jonas hellborg

me too i thought these excerpts from allmusic's description of the cd " Icon " put it is a very concise way. The most impressive aspect of this recording, however, is not Hellborg's technique, or that of his long-term collaborator, guitarist Shawn Lane, but the integration of the two...

    jonas hellborg

i would be surprised to find out that many people had been influenced by him. i'm sure that he is more popular in europe, india, and other places that he plays and travels through but in north america, even among bass players, he's not that well known ( comparatively speaking ). part of this is...

    whats your favorite acoustic

i would have to say a tacoma thunderchief. they're a bit fragile, but i think that it is the light construction that allows the body to resonate so well. the sound just jumped out of the bass, and it was nice to take to the porch and play acoustically with out having to kill your hands to get a...

Musings on The Who (Superbowl, etc)

i think it has to do with the drive to succeed. it is similar to some of these businessmen who lead corporations. a lot of these guys are wealthy beyond reason and yet they show up to work everyday, often long past the time when regular people retire. i think that whatever has driven them to...

    Noob 'finger roll' question

i presume you mean using a digit to make a mini barre across two strings. i use this technique both up and down. i mute with my right fingers. i will do a walk up and down fret by fret pushing down 2 notes with each of the 4 digits on my left hand simultaneously while fingering each note...

Kiss passed over at Rock HOF

i've never been a huge fan of kiss and always assumed that they got the attention they did by some talent that i just wasn't aware of because i didn't really listen to them. then a friend of mine lent a dvd box set of theirs. it was about 6 hours long and it took me about a half an hour to...

    Play bass like a guitar

i know that JPJ on his solo tours uses multi string guitars ( manton's i think - though i can't remember if the guitars are guitar based or bass based ) that will be strung like a 12 string guitar ( though not the same string gauges ). it fills out his sound a great deal more than just a bass...

double bass sound in a bass guitar?

i would suggest a godin a4. with flats it has a real db type of sound. also check out the tacoma ABG. i had one with frets and it had a great sound and i think it might sound really good fretless. also have you considered one of the electric uprights ( kydd etc. ) they may allow you to...

Is there really a NEED to own a four string bass?

i've been playing for 26 years. i love my 4 strings. i have a really nice 5 as well. while i like playing the 5, i kind of think of it as a novelty. i think it is just because i have become so used to a 4 string. i play a lot of fast fusion like stuff at times and i can't seem to get around...

    Lakland vs. MusicMan

i had an EBMM stingray 5 string and now own a lakland skyline 55 - 01 with nordstrand big splits and an audere 18v preamp. the build quality of both is superb. i personally prefer the lakland as i like the 19mm string spacing at the bridge, i prefer the wider and shallower neck and my hands...

    Bass Relief question......

the easiest way to think of this is the truss rod opposes the pull of the strings. the strings want to pull the neck to the front side of the bass and the truss rod wants to pull it back. therefore tightening the rod will oppose the strings and pull the neck back while loosening it will allow...

    Bass Action for Slap

i've found that low action is better. it'll be easier on your hands and honestly, why make anything harder than it has to be. if you are hitting the frets on the b or e then examine how you are striking the strings, perhaps there is something not quite right with your technique. i slap all of...
