I think fret markers or dots are a mental thing. I have basses with and without and never had any trouble.

Have you changed anything other than the strings? Is your battery low? Pickups might be a little out of phase. take it to a local pro and get their opinion.

here is my 2 cents I would suggest buying a new bass. There area lot of cheaper models that do not have as many issues. If the bass sounds bad, adding pickups and preamps will only help a little. If you find a lower ebd bass with passive pick ups that has great tone it will only sound better...

I f you want a smoother sound from a pick try the Dunlop Nylon 1mm. I have never had one break and because of their flexability they have a smoother sound. for a crisp sound I like the green tortex.

I use round wound strings. Tone and volume turned up. I have blend knob for the pickups that is turned up slighlty in favor of the neck pick up.
