I can't believe how well those tuning pegs turned out! Wowsers! Your plectrum will be interesting to watch, as well. I'm not familiar with the Okinawan version you're building, but the traditional Japanese plectrum is longer than that.

    What is your earliest memory?

The summer I was three, I went to an older cousin's wedding (my mother was the youngest, after a lapse of several years) and my mother dressed me in the American dress she'd packed in my suitcase. I remember being mad because I wanted a Kimono like Auntie's.

In Japanese, plurals are provided by context, not by modifying the word. So one Sanshin is a Sanshin, and two ore more Sanshin are also Sanshin.

The OFFICIAL "Gretsch Bass Owners Club"

Does the buzz go away when you touch the strings? If so, you're looking at a shielding issue, and need to put shielding in the electronics bay of the guitar.

Next big new technology? Follow the toys..."Toy Theory"

Well, we're starting to see robotics pop up in things like Legos, and I think Robotics are one of the big coming trends. Robot dogs and cats are popping up from time to time, and there's that robosapien thing. I think it's more accurate to say that the first iteration of a new technology is...

    Awesome custom work!

The surprising thing is that I've seen worse crap go for a lot of money on eBay. Of course, that's generally been because the poster had a good story, and got people's imaginations involved. This guy? "I, uh, frakked up a bass neck, and now I want to sell it." Yeah... no.

    6-String Bass Newb Question

It looked nice. I didn't handle it, so I can't say how it sounded, or its weight or anything. But the neck looked... unweildly wide.

    6-String Bass Newb Question

I stopped in my town pawn shop (mostly because it's right next to the Subway where I bought lunch) and they have an Ibanez Soundgear 6-string on the wall. It was behind the counter, and I wasn't interested enough to ask the clerk to get up off his stool and hand it to me. But thinking about it...

Have you ever had a "bowl" haircut?

When I was a Babydyke, I had a haircut a lot like that. That period lasted about six months, and then I grew it out to a pageboy, and then just let my hair grow again.

    BASS LESSONS FROM ANYONE???

Michelle Pfeiffer. Hey, I might not learn much about the bass, but I'd get to spend time with Michelle Pfeiffer!

Would you take the Bieber gig?

Here's the thing about Bieber: I think a lot of the antagonism pointed at him is actually misogyny. Read me out, here. No; I don't care for Bieber's music. But there are a great many artists of international stature whose music does nothing for me, but against whom I do not see the mountains...

    Roddy White loses bet...welches

If the facts are as you've presented them, then it doesn't matter that the fan didn't risk anything. If Mr. White said "if x happens, I will y," then he should regard that as his obligation.

    gibson v ephiphone

Well, the Gibsons are made in Nashville; the Epiphones in Indonesia. If that's important to you....

    gibson v ephiphone

My experience from handling them both at a store is that the Gibson is lighter than any Epiphone but the Pro model. As for sound... I couldn't hear a significant difference.

Which Lord of the Rings character to you identify with?

Women do make a better showing in The Silmarilion, but honestly, even there, we're mostly inspiration and support. I really liked the character of Tauriel in the most recent Hobbit film... she at least gives girls a seat at the table.

    Treehouse Masters

We're adults, now. We get to define what that means for ourselves. For some of us, it means fancy treehouses. For ourselves.

Which Lord of the Rings character to you identify with?

In the book version of the LotR, Eowyn is pretty much the only strong woman. I know, Professor Tolkein was a product of his times, and all that, but still... LotR is one hell of a Sausage Party.

    Navy Aircraft Carrier Bass

If you're still planning to put a hull number out on the headstock, keep in mind that it should match the one on the pickguard.

I think the bridge transmits the vibration of the string to the resonating cavity... the leather covered "drum," if you will. I think reinforcing underneath will dampen the amount of sound you get out of it.

    What's your "White Whale"?

Not a bass, but a guitar. My first electric guitar, purchased while I was in college from the little luthier shop up the street from said college. I bought it, and noodled with it, but then I got to a place where I really needed the money more than I needed an electric guitar, and so it had to...

    Tucson residents

Tucson and Phoenix draw their water from the Colorado River, which no longer reaches the sea. And from aquifers which are being used faster than they're replenishing. The water situation there is going to get worse unless there are dramatic technological advances in desalination and we can...

My Son Got His First Girlfriend!

Asperger's manifests somewhat differently in girls, and there are a couple of good books on that manifestation. The good news is, I know of several Aspys who have perfectly fulfilling relationships, either with neurotypical partners or with fellow Aspys. It's a challenge and a hurdle, but it...

    Tucson residents

The problem with Phoenix *or* Tucson is that the number of people living in the Sonoran desert vastly outstrip the water resources of the area. When you add in the fact that the American Southwest is in the middle of a mega-drought, you realize that sooner or later, things are going to get dire.

    Anyone read the Fountainhead

I did. I also read _Atlas Shrugged_. My basic thought boils down to: Ayn Rand was a terrible human being, but her opposition to Communism is understandable given her early experiences.

What happened to Malaysia Airlines Flight 370?

I think we're all missing the most important question: If you were on an aircraft abducted by aliens, what bass would you want to have onboard with you? What musical style would you use to try and communicate with the aliens?

Playing Baritone Guitar: Thoughts and questions

I've been having thoughts about getting one, as well. Agile makes a relatively inexpensive one, and I've been thinking about picking one up and noodling with it... if I like it, I figure I can move up to a better.

What happened to Malaysia Airlines Flight 370?

If nothing else, all of this speculation really brings out how dependent on the flight crew the passengers are, and how fragile an airline passenger's experience is.

What happened to Malaysia Airlines Flight 370?

You don't take almost 300 hostages for ransom and then wait more than a week before demanding it. It just doesn't make any kind of sense.
