Double Bass Naming your Bass? (DB forum thread)

I went through a few months trying to figure out the name of my Engelhardt EM1. I don't really like men's or women's names for my instruments. I toyed with Meatball or Dub. Then it struck me last month out of nowhere. The shades of brown... the growl, especially when bowed... Chewbacca.

    The Epiphone Thunderbird Club

Hey everyone! I know I have not been around this forum in MONTHS and have been behind on new members wanting to join to club. My jobs and other interests have taken me away from TalkBass so I think it is time to pass on the reins of number-giver-person-whatever. If you would like to take...

How long have you kept your flats on?

Mine are still going. I don't know how many years. It was the first set I bought and for a few years the only ones I liked and could never find, so they didn't get replaced. They still sound good to me and are not rusty, so I still have them around.

So they are just trying to sell these by calling them used?

Good or bad? Peavey Mill4 Millennium

Has anyone else noticed how many Peavey Mill4 Millennium basses are up on the used section of Guitar Center's website? Is there a problem with that instrument or is the market just flooded like the Squier Affinities used to be?

Sorry about that Dr. Eagle. I usually don't give out a number unless I see them write that they want in. Sometimes we have just had people wanting to show off their T-Bird, but not wanting to join the club. Anyway here is your number: Dr. Eagle #161

Basses you will never sell..........show em

Crazy... My name is Derek Beaudoin and the first bass I bought new was a blue Squier Affinity. That was awhile ago... it is in it's 6th regeneration now. Here is a picture from the 3rd. Maybe I should call it "The Doctor". :) I don't think I could sell this thing if I wanted to. So...

    Fender necks, Squier body.

Well there's your problem, Allpart is not Fender. Anyway, I put my MIM Fender Jazz neck on my Squier Affinity P-bass body. Pretty solid fit. Part of it may have been the paint on the inside of the pocket. A layer or two of acrylic paint will fill that gap.

How to Play with Chrome Pickup Covers?

^THIS. I anchor my thumb like that and play behind the cover on my p-bass. When I use a pick and play between the covers and my hands rests nicely on the bridge cover.

Has anyone ever thrown out a bass?

If only I could be that lucky. The local high school had a double bass that was slightly broken (neck disconnecting from body) that I wished I could have bought off them.

    Yet another dodgy Ebay deal.

I would still rock it, but for more like $200.

make my bass a string through?

Honestly, I just got a string through bridge, marked the holes in a 2x4 and drilled it first, checking the lineup, then used the 2x4 as a guide for my holes when drilling the body. The holes might have been off by a millimeter, but it isnt a big deal to me. Install ferrules and you are done.

Has anyone ever thrown out a bass?

I never threw any away, but I did donate one of my extra basses that had been sitting unused to Doernbecher Children's Hospital for Christmas. I do hope it went to a kid looking to play.

    Worlds Fattest Bassist

Hey thanks for the calorie counter. This may well help me. 5'8" 260lbs. Most of it is hanging out in the gut and chest. I have a goal to do some wear and tear to my basses because of belt buckle rash, but I have to get the gut down first. ;)

Anyone here ever FORGOTTEN to take their instrument to a gig/performance?

I haven't done so, but our church's other bass player has, repeatedly. Luckily I keep one of my basses in my office at the church. It is also nice because I don't have to remember to bring all the stuff from home when I play. I swap out the three basses every so often. Currently the...

    Stupid P-Bass question :-)

MultiplepersonalityBassist could have their own thread. I feel sorry for his wife since he is gone all the time between his metal, jazz, punk, classic rock and blues bands. Not to mention how many basses he has for them all. ;)

    Stupid P-Bass question :-)

It is a looks thing, but I kinda like it. I have a couple spots I play on my p-bass: regular thumb rest in front of pickup guard, thumb anchored on the top of the pickup guard and plucking behind the guard, and using a pick in the sweet spot between pickup and bridge guards.

My bands Craigslist for 2nd guitarist

Sounds like he is only expressing what he doesn't want, obviously that is going to sound negative. It also isn't a place to share previous experiences dealing with bad band mates. If you describe what you are looking for instead of what you are NOT looking for it will sound much more...
