sound of E string on a 5string bass

Could the difference possibly be in the pickup pole pieces? On a five string, I wonder if the pole pieces under the B and A strings affect the E, whereas on a 4-string, only the E and A pole pieces have a magnetic pull. The magnetic fields might not be large enough for this to make a...

Frets. Do you hammer or press?

You might've misunderstood the question. I hammer frets for all the same reasons as mentioned above. I had a great opportunity to see Frank Ford doing a re-fret, and he also uses a hammer.

Wood p@rn - why do we bother?

+1000 Nothing pisses me of more than a waste of nice wood. It upsets me when I see an instrument that is basically a scrap-heap of expensive wood. Likewise, a poor quality painted instrument is about as rare as rain in Seattle.

Alright, finally....here are some pictures of the final touches to make this a finished project. Body ready for Tung Oil: After: The flame really popped. I was very excited with how it looked. I applied 9 coats of Tung Oil (Minwax stuff... 3 coats a day, 0000 steel wool between...

Yeah, finding a sting supplier was difficult. :rollno: (it's just a 35" scale) Thanks to Thumpin P for the SPOILER!!!! Just kidding. My experience at R-V has come to a close, and I am now home (parents' basement) in Omaha. Within the next couple days, I will try to find time to...

    Roberto-Venn: The Dream Starts...

Mr. P, RV was a fantastic experience. It was great seeing everyone grow in their abilities and improve their skills. It was also a great opportunity to form tight relationships with people across the country with similar interests. I am going to miss everyone at the shop, including you...

Rob, I did a fairly thorough search on TB before posting my last entry, and this was the video I found that inspired me the most. After looking a little bit more this morning (at the shop again today), I think I will go for that method. It looks difficult to master, but I will practice on...

Full pics will be coming soon. By the time I get my laptop fixed (or a new one...or get back to Omaha to my desktop), this thing will be finished and strung up! A question or two about the finish... I have decided on doing a hand-rubbed finish, something like Tung Oil or similar. I would...

Unfortunately, my computer has figuratively exploded, so I will not be able to post sound clips or pictures of the new knobs for quite a while. Sorry to get your hopes up. (this post courtesy of R-V library)

P, I'm really glad you got pictures of Frank Ford's visit. It was so amazing having him in the shop. I don't think I will ever meet anyone with as much knowledge or experience in the world of acoustic guitar repair. He is such an inspiration. Your acoustic is lookin good, btw!!

    Bass Build

Jeff, Maybe my post came across the wrong way. Build pictures and sound clips are not "required", but they are customary in a build thread. Thank you for extra photos, but all four are of the finished product (three of which are the fretboard). I'm not going to say that you fall into this...

    Tinozza ABC Build

Very cool! I'm glad you made a few changes to the original Tinozza, like the standard acoustic bridge. I really like the rosette and your choice of woods overall. A great looking bass, and hopefully a great sounding one! Clips, please!

I had to resurrect this thread, because I promised to give you sound clips, and I will! I finally am set-up to record (although I'm not sure how good the quality will be). Expect some sound clips posted here by the end of the week.

Hi everybody. It's been a while since I updated. Thanks for being patient. So there isn't a whole lot visually for you guys to see, but I have made "significant" progress on this. I took the neck out to get the final carving done (3rd time carving it). I realized that it still felt a...

    wooden bridge insanity (help designing)

Very cool, T2W. It looks like the strings are anchored through the body. Do your bridges have a top-loading option? If the wood along the back edge was a little thicker, or reinforced with aluminum or something, then that could be a solution to Meatrus' question.

    wooden bridge insanity (help designing)

Maybe this will help. A compensated saddle is usually stationary, but removable and made out of bone or something similar. Since it is removable, it can be replaced with a newly compensated saddle if your current setup (string gauge, action, tuning) does not fit your needs. The...

    wooden bridge insanity (help designing)

Are you referring to Mario's bridge tutorial? I see what you mean; it does look a little odd "backwards". It has the look of a Hipshot A-style, but the strings are anchored to the body, not the bridge. With Mario's design, if the bridge was oriented the other way, the strings would not have...

Sorry to interject one last time... I actually have tried Blue Moon, and it is one of the more tolerable beers I have tasted. Also, today I sipped on a Shiner Bock that had flavor I could appreciate. Whether I could make it past the bottleneck, I don't know...but I might be "acquiring a...

I agree with this situation wholeheartedly. My parents, too, allowed me to taste test whatever alcohol they were drinking, and I definitely had less desire to get smashed because of that. I suppose my taste buds just haven't adapted yet. I do not recall exactly which brands and types of...

Pilot... just wanted to reiterate that this is, by far, my favorite thread on TB right now. You do such a great job narrating your build and describing your thought process. I only wanted to say THANK YOU, again, for all the information you are sharing. As a side note, I am 22 years young...

Paul, thanks for the compliments. As for the headstock, I am confident the tuners will not be a problem. My NS Design CR5M has a very similar headstock design, and I have not noticed any constructional/functional issues. If the strings are wound around the posts properly, the headstock will...

    Build number 2: at R-V

I was wondering who would be the first to notice... The knobs I made were unfortunately a little two short to cover up the pot nuts and washers, and they weren't wide enough (or tall enough) for me to create a little recess on their underside to let them sit flush against the bass. So I'm...

    Ash/Maple Six String

I believe they are opposites. Heartwood, like its name suggests, is the core of the tree. Sapwood is the outer layer of wood beneath the bark. I think the yellow on SaintMez' piece of rosewood is sapwood, not heartwood. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. This project looks like it'll be...

A new Drake 4 string bass

To revert back to the magnets, I got mine from K&J Magnetics. They shipped to Nebraska in a matter of days, and they have really good prices with a huge selection. Just another option. This build is looking great! I also used the Minwax Wipe-on satin poly for my first build. It was easy...

Not much of an update here, as this instrument has being in the drying room curing all week. However, I did go back to my wooden knobs and drill them out for the proper sized hole so they'll squeeze onto knurled pots. This required me to make a fixture that I could hold them into place while I...

Hehe...no, I did not burn it on purpose. I took three passes, each about 1/32" deep. With the tiny burr bit I used and the small channel being routed, the combination of high speeds and friction caused it to burn despite my best efforts. But the bottom line is that it doesn't matter because...
