Good flat wound strings for a u-bass?

I put a set of Thomastik 324 which I did't really like on my 30" shortscale on my old California Solid Body. Very nice. Changed the Bridge postion plus 10 mm backwards for good oktaves. Be careful cutting the E-string not to unwrap the outer layer.

Hofner Shorty Bass - Machine Head Recos?

I installed Schaller M4B-2000 mechanics, very good and nice. Strings I recommend are GHS Pressure Wounds. Pickup EMGHz and a Wilkinson Bridge, didn't like the chrome monster on such a tiny instrument.

    Kala UBass Megathread, Part 7

Pyramid told me, that Kala got two sets of the Black Tapes at the Frankfurt/Germany-Musikmesse in March. Maybe they tested them in the meantime... Attention: the solid bodies - through body stringing - need a bit more length than the acoustics. There should be no thick part of the string at the...

    Kala UBass Megathread, Part 7

Of course the Pyramids have a metal core, the wrapping is also metal, don't know if it is silver plated copper or any kind of steel. The outer wrapping is nylon tape. They work fine on the Cali4 and produce a nice woody tone without the mud of the Pahoes. The action has to be lowered. I tried to...

    Kala UBass Megathread, Part 7

I think the Pyramid Black Tapes will be in the market more or less soon. I tested several versions and gauges and after many weeks I think they got it right, Suppose they will sound extremely nice on fretless basses, I got a fretted Cali4 and I will pull off the frets some day to get that dog...

No Form, I just mailed that I wanted a set of four for the Kala Solid Body UBass. They know the length and calculated the gauges. But be careful: only after replacing the bridge about 8 mm towards the bottom of the body, the intonation is more or less okay. Strange...I didn't hear of...

I payed 49.- € for this experiment. Expensive, but I got really tired of the well known rubber issues... Thomann sells the long scale version of those strings for 36.50 €, therefore I think they will get significantly cheaper if Pyramid starts a serie production. Who knows?

Metal inside, flat nylon tape outside. Gauges: E 0.102 A 0.089 D 0.071 G 0.056 Each string 6 kg tension according to Pyramid. Washers needed. Outer diameter 8 mm, hole diameter 4 mm. Pictures of the instrument and maybe a sound clip later. The work is in patient progress.

Got a custom set of Black Tape Nylons by Pyramid, which I'm not affiliated with, for my Cali4 yesterday. Nice defined sound, really woody without the low end boom of the Pahoes and more treble than I expected. No finger noise, no plastic quak. Nice light touch and a very sensitive reaction...

Ask Max to increase the input impedance to 10M, should be no problem for this skilled guy, who is very open for specific needs. My fdeck stays with the roll off at 35 Hz, for higher frequency adjustments use amp EQ without killing too much bottom.

After playing around with different digital amps I returned to my good old Little Mark 250. I liked the GK MBX 112 aluminum cab, but the two I tried made the same collateral pathological noises in the first octave of E, F and F sharp. A leading GK guy mailed back, that they are probably not...

The solid bodies match well with EB amps. Their DC output resistance is about 11 kOhms, a range where many magnetic PUs work... BUT: my Cali4 sounds way better through the HPF3. I bought it to eliminate subsonic low end for speaker protection and was pretty amazed about a very tight and clear...

    Kala UBass Megathread, Part 5

The Kala typical way to mount the bridge decreases normally the distance between frets and bridge causing sharp intonation in my case. If restringing was not such a pita, I would have opened my toolbox. There is some wear or 'play' in the drilling of the wooden part of the bridge and pressing it...

The mids are fine indeed, just noticed that some low end got lost. On the solid I cut off the highs about 80%. But remember, I'm not a pro like you, just a seasoned living room warrior. My last session buddies kicked me after showing up with the Ubass several times, 'don't you play your REAL...

I'm talking about the solid body Ubass, amping the acoustic hog might be another cup of tea. The MBX 112 is just an extension cabinet. 12" speaker, very nice sound, enough if there are no marshalling heroes or hardrocking drummers.

I prefer setting 11 or 12, counted from start, which is bypass. Don't know the values. The darkest setting is really reggae-black or deepest motown. They mention only this cap value on their page... I have the new tc BH 250 as amp, I checked the new GK MB 200 and disliked it 100%. Screaming...

After trying a Reussenzehn Bass Max Tube Pre, too much highs and tube compression... the MXR 10 band EQ, too much knobs killing the vivid sound character... and the sfx Red Dragon, emphazising the mids... I ended with Cali4 - Stellartone Tonestyler (passiv, 15 different resistor/capacitor...

Even if you loosen it too much, it will not slip, but why should you? Just apply the right amount of a slight turn left and perhaps a bit of grease or oil or even better graphit between the cogwheel and the plate and you are done.

    Kala UBass Megathread, Part 4

It's because this scew holds the shaft AND the cogwheel in the tuner housing. If fixed too tight, there is friction between the wheel and the ground plate. Tuning higher is okay, but tuning down again, the cogwheel-friction fixes the pitch and you need that 90 degrees to overcome the 'play' of...

Ed Friedland about Ronnie Baker in 'The R&B Bass Masters': 'His sound has been described as 'dead, deader, deadest'. Keeping his strings from having any ring to them was an obsession - some people claim he actually marinated his strings in butter to further deaden the sound.'
