Guitar players to bass players to drummer ratios

In my neck of the woods you can't swing a dead cat without hitting a guitar player. Only a few can really play. Bassists (who can play) are few and far between and there is only one worthy keyboardist. Needless to say he is gigged up. Drummers to bassists are about equal. I also own guitars...

    Is this tacky and lame?

I gotta go with lame here - unless you all dye your hair the same color, wear matching clothes and name the band The Clones.

    Slung low or high?

I played an acoustic gig where I sat on a bar stool Friday night and Saturday morning my forearm was really sore. It is painfully obvious.

A buddy of mine used that head with a big CV folded horn back in the day. Gnarly rig.

    Instruments other than bass

Oh same here. I can play a chord if someone calls it out but other than that, I suck. I would love to be better. Not to mention the gigging potential - good keyboardists are very hard to come by.

Being a musician is a fiscal disaster

Bingo! Networking is maybe the most important aspect of being a musician. As a singing bass player I am in demand. I sing lead in a bar band and back-up in 2 original bands. I'm mediocre at both things but, all the local bands know I have the ability and since I am friendly and supportive of...

Nerves and playing with someone really great!

Lydia Pence - I was nervous the entire time. Hand cramps, flop sweat, anal leakage, the whole nine. Eddie Money used to come to our rehearsals and sit in once in awhile. I was young and impressionable and he was really full of himself.

What Are Your Other Creative Interests?

Luckily my job demands some creativity - I am a kitchen remodel specialist. I also play guitar, mandolin and uke and tie my own flies and fish them.

How much do you let your amp define your tone and over all sound?

I feel that way to a point. Ultimately it is my fingers that give me the tonal attack and growl I love but, bump one knob on accident and . . . .

    Amp on stand?

The Jimmy Fallon as Neil Young version? :hyper: I'm a big fan of coupling - particularly on an elevated stage. Granted it can turn to crap easily enough but, it is like any other tool you use in your tone. I can't possibly be the only one who feels this way.

    Amp on stand?

Every time I play - it's just a smart thing to do. I have been doing this a long time and I know what I hear. With all due respect telling me it's not what I'm hearing is silly. :)

Selling a busted combo. What's reasonable?

You hear about cooked combo speakers a lot - not impossible. Maybe it just needed some time in the "boot" as a behavioral correction kind of thing. May work for other things too. Kids, pets. etc.

Big +1 for Dream Theater. If the singer is also the song writer, how can he/she possibly ruin the band?

    Open Mic's as a spectator

My wife and I will go - grab a beer and some food. If a band I'm in is looking for players we will go. Sometimes there are gems to be found.

in two bands and one might have to go... how?

You need to ask yourself why you play in the first place. Hobby, want or need? Obviously your children/family should come first. I have seen players put everything after music and eventually music is all they had. I also know plenty of players who make it all work because they want to. I'm...

    Amp on stand?

Same here in the trio. Bass is a huge part of the overall sound. In the big band it doesn't matter quite as much. I keep an EV 115 on the guitarists side - he likes to put his amp on it too. Being in between cabs the drummer gets the full effect and loves it. The few times I have tried stands...

    Beginner Practice Amp

Don't waste time or money buying a "practice amp" you may outgrow in a year. There are plenty of good lightweight combo amps that will offer you line in/phone out, keep up with a small group and still have a reasonably small footprint. If all you want to do is practice stick with headphones.

how long is too long for a repair?

The man obviously has no respect for you or your situation. Totally unacceptable. Tell him to get your amp back ASAP. Go pick up the amp, pay nothing, take it somewhere else, never use him again.

    Some cool uke songs?

Anything can be played on Uke. Last time I was in Hawaii I noticed everyone playing them (I believe it is a state requirement that you know how) so, I picked one up and was amazed when I downloaded the chord charts. Now I use one in certain songs in the neo-swing band.

Improving Equipment - where to start ?

It sounds like you are overdriving the input on that poor old head. Still, those babies put out serious power so maybe it's just giving up. There are a lot of good amps out there but, there are a ton of different preamp configurations. Go play stuff.

    Best Gigging Combo Amp

Because digital power is deceptive and lacks headroom. The 250 may keep up but it gives up it's soul in the process. If I had to chose between the 2 I would go for the BG500 210 model but, for OP's budget I second looking for a used Walkabout.

Why (or how) do you dislike people?

I dislike people in general but, it's part of the burden of being a cynic. I really dislike ignorant or outright stupid people. People who watch reality TV that drags their mind even farther into the gutter (Real Housewives comes to mind) and people who disagree with anything I say. Ever.
