Are you a Goldilocks bass player?

If guitar/bass is any amount out of tune or if there is any amount of feedback, my head explodes a little.

    Pricing for venues/bars

I played out in south east PA for a few years at local bars. Going rate was about $400/night for a decent local band. Waaay to much work for me. Getting all the gear there, setting up, playing, tearing down, getting home after 3am. Fun for a few years, but it got old. My favorite gigs are where...

    Selling tickets for shows

from my experience, tix sales is for new bands that haven't proved they can draw a crowd. If the band sells the tix (or just eats the cost of unsold tix), then the venue doesn't loose money if no one shows up. Not a bad way to start for young guys with 100's of friends and no families. if a...

How far do you have to travel for band practice/rehearsal ?

We rotate practices between the Guitar player's house and the Drummer's house. Each are ~45 min from my place. We practice 1x a month.

    Original Band Start up

Good Stuff so far guys. Thanks for sharing. We record all of our practices (audio and video) and then review what we did for an hour at the end of practice every week. The video is kinda cool, it is making me realize i need to play with more energy. I listen to the audio during the week as...

Lead Guitar has a side project

A year later... The lead guitar left the band last fall. We went through 2 other guys in 6 months and then I left the band in February this year. After 2 years we should have been pretty solid, but we were never able to play consistently well. the nice thing about being a bass player; I was...

    Original Band Start up

I left my classic rock cover band and joined a new alternative pop/punk original group. while I've been in original bands before, they never got anywhere because we didn't know how to get off the ground. We just started playing together about 2 months ago, we have zero following and need...

"You're TOO LOUD !!!" "You guys are the GREATEST..."

I am in a too loud all the time band. We get away with it at large venues, but at small clubs it is terrible... Good thing we have a group of die hard fans that follow us, or the small clubs would clear out. We have a gig at a new place next week, I am so worried we will bleed their ears and...

85 Guild Pilot Pups and G string.

Some updates: •replaced all the springs/screws/pads on the pups which made them much easier to adjust. •dissembled the bridge. Cleaned and oiled all adjustment parts. •Raised the P pickup section that is under the D/G strings •Raised the bottom side of the J (so that it...

Tapping your foot when you play

I have heard comments that sometimes all 4 of us (2x guitars, singer, me) are all tapping our feet in unison. My foot is like its own entity, it just taps when it feels like it. I almost always tap on rests to keep my timing, or I pat my bass with my right hand. Sometimes I even stop my foot...

85 Guild Pilot Pups and G string.

This is likely at least 1 of my problems. I'll post an update after I check them this weekend.

85 Guild Pilot Pups and G string.

thanks for the replies. consensus seems to be: confirm wiring/setup before writing off pups, which sounds like great advice. I will re-check soldier joints, pot values, adjust pup height, and see if strings could come down a little.

85 Guild Pilot Pups and G string.

I have been playing a mid 80's guild Pilot for about 2 years. I have rotosound flatwounds on it, and I think it has the original EMG actives. I got this bass with non-working electronics out of a guys closet about 10 years ago and fixed it up the best I could. I am worried that the pups...

    Battle of the Bands

I was going to make a thread, but I bumped this one instead. I signed my band up for a battle of the band next month. I was reluctant to do so (since we already gig around 1x a month for a year and we are all a little older), but this one didnt seem too bad. 1: the guy hosting it is around 45...

Guess who reared her ugly head this afternoon?

Simple man, Kryptonite (sp?), and sunshine on your love all drive me nuts. I don't mind long train. Sweet home Alabama is an ez crowd pleaser. Is there something I should know about gimmi 3 steps? I think that is on my bands maybe list to learn this summer. I have never played it.

    Harp players

speaking of random keyed harp... I was basement jamming with some guys a few years back. We do the first few songs in G, but then we change to A (cant remember the key, just that we changed) and I notice the Harp player NOT changing harps. So I causally say "hey buddy, we are going in A for...

This stuff works great, and its not too hard on the finish. I think it is very similar to lighter fluid for zippos and such.

    Harp players

Thanks for the input guys. Seems like most of us are on or near the same page when it comes to the harp players. •Good harp, played at the right times is great, but be weary over drama concerning money at paid gigs. •we all shutter at the harp that plays over leads, vocals, and...

    'Live' bands with backing tracks

I agree with most of whats said here. How do you feel about Loop stations? I know of a solo act where he starts each song by playing 4 bars on guitar, loops that, and then plays lead and sings over the looped rhythm. He might have used some simple drum tracks too. Id say he this was OK being...

No thanks, we don't do it for money...

I saw a band once that upon finishing up the crowd wanted more so the Band leader says "im gonna pass my hat around for tips" implying that they were gonna play another set for tips. well holy ****, they filled that hat with like 200$ real quick. being that the gig only paid 400, id say they did...

    Harp players

How does your band interact with harp players? What do you as a bassist enjoy about a 'good' harp player and what habits bug you about these harp players? :We have a harp player that does 5 or 6 songs with us when we gig. He brings his own mic and has a harp for each key. We have practiced...

    My drummer REALLY bugs me...

4 bands played on our drummers full kit on saturday. Its not a super high end kit, but its still all of his gear. All of the hometown bands are friendly with each other here and help each other out. Your drummer should beware 'what goes around comes around'. You can deny the use of your gear...

    Band Rehearsal Frustration Rant....

We saw an 80's rock cover band the other night that played all their songs 'radio' version to the T. Like dead on to what people remember hearing on the radio in 1988. Long story short, crowd loved it and was able to sing along and dance to every song. My band is more of a jam band at times. We...

Lead Guitar has a side project

update: Lead guitar has not been practicing with his other group. I think they only have gotten together 1x since I started this thread. Looks like I was overreacting to our bad outing in early April and thought it was so bad we would break up. Since the April train wreck we have been doing...

Gigs you like to play and why...

There are 2 private summer parties I go to every year. There is no pay, but they are always a blast. Lots of other musicians are there (at least 50 at each) to talk to and play with all day. We have been playing a nice bar this year that has been a good venue. It is a long building with the bar...

    Booking woes

What Do You Do If Your Guitarist Has Inferior Equipment?

without reading the whole thread, Ill just point out that My band has a great lead guitar that cannot afford a proper stack. We Mic his amp at gigs and let the PA do the heavy lifting for him. This allows him to keep his amp more as a monitor. Also the amp doesnt sound bad if you can keep the...

Lead Guitar has a side project

Looks like the band still floats! we played well last night. People that were not in our group of friends were dancing too...
