I’m a lucky man! It’s my birthday at the beginning of May and a mystery box arrived at the door early this morning. My wonderful wife said that as she had nowhere to hide it that I must open it now! Wow! 🤩 I’ve wanted a red Thunderbird for 30+ years and this is an absolute beauty, just like my...

I just spotted these on the Epiphone site. Take my money now, I’ve always wanted a red one!

I love the red ones that show up from time to time but I agree, white is lovely too. I can’t believe that Epiphone have currently discontinued the white model in the Thunderbird 60’s bass line.

    Dee Dee and CJ

Much has been made here and elsewhere of the Ramones all downstroke style but where did Dee Dee and later CJ land their blows? It’s not always easy to see what their right hands were doing in old footage and at the speed their wrists are moving. Dee Dee, from what I can make out, played either...

Do you change the strings on your brand new Fender bass?

I replaced the stock strings with them that came on the bass when I bought it new. The specific set I put on were the S.I.T. nickel Rock Brights 45-105. They’re branded as medium-light, so for my specific purposes with that particular bass can take a heavy downstroke attack and deliver a great...

Do you change the strings on your brand new Fender bass?

Not immediately, no but changed to a set of SIT nickels within about 3 months, more because there was a specific sound I was shooting for, not because I had any particular issue with the stock strings.

Yeah, the “typical” EQ for my P-bass and my Thunderbird are quite different.

Don’t be surprised if you have to roll off a fair bit of low end with the Thunderbird when doing downstrokes. There’ll still be plenty there but you’ll be amazed at what an earth shaker it is!

Hello, brother! CJ’s solo stuff is absolutely top drawer, love it! I love jamming out some Ramones tunes on my P-bass and absolutely always use the authentic technique when doing so. I do it through a VT Bass DI or should I call it a VT Dee Dee in a Box? I’ve started using the triangular Tortex...

I don’t have them on my Thunderbird but have a set on my P-bass. CJ Ramone uses them, they’re great for that aggressive, downstroke style and have a decent life.

I got my Thunderbird back from it's pro set up yesterday and it was really worth doing, even if I only ever do it once. He adjusted the nut, levelled and conditioned the frets, replaced the foam in the pickups, replaced the screws in the pickup covers, did the shielding in the pickups and back...

it was made in September 2017, so definitely a Vintage Pro and not the newer 60s Bass version. Looks like a rosewood fretboard to me, I have an Indian Laurel fretboard P Bass and it’s much lighter than that.

    Thunderbird Club

This could be down to Epiphone’s rebranding. They changed the name of the Vintage Pro to the Thunderbird 60s Bass fairly recently. The VP listings state rosewood fingerboard whilst the 60s Bass say Indian Laurel. It’s not impossible they might have an older model in stock that has a rosewood...

I’ve gone ahead and booked a pro set up with a respected technician locally, he’s in demand so my slot is towards the end of June but that’s fine. The service is really thorough and he covers everything from frets to wiring and everything in between. He’s going to sort out what’s going on under...

That could well be the case, the pickups do actually move up and down, it’s just that the screws protrude above the hole when they’re raised which doesn’t look great.

I went down a bit of a rabbit hole today adjusting the pickups on my 2011 Epiphone Thunderbird IV (which I’ve not done before). I’m generally happy with the set up but felt that the E string was quieter and more dull sounding than the G, which prompted my tinkering (this followed raising my...

    Dee Dee Ramone

Dee Dee was so entertaining to watch, big fan here. I’m not entirely sure how he did what he did but he had a style all of his own and I love his bass barrage sound. It’s cool to hear his isolated bass parts without Johnny’s buzzsaw guitar over the top, you can really hear those percussive...

There is some uncertainty that comes with the renaming of the Vintage Classic Pro to the Thunderbird 60s Bass. Epiphone say that they’ve renamed it but the Vintage Classic Pro was a through neck construction whereas the 60s Bass is listed as having a glued in neck. I only found one store online...

They did, yes. As you’ll see from the attached 2011-2012 catalogue, the Thunderbird IV had a 1.73” nut and somewhere between then and the 2013 catalogue, it got slimmer. You’ll see some of the other Thunderbird variants already had the slimmer neck at this point. Invalid Link Removed You can...

It is! I have this Thunderbird and case. I don’t think they’re the factory strings though, from the red silks and coloured ball ends, I’d say they’re Rotosound Swing Bass strings.
