Barber Linden EQ • New small form factor

Me too. Although I was fortunate to get a one-off request built for me back in those glorious and heady non-dream crushing days when Josh was still accepting special commissions.

Interestingly enough, it was an always-on baxandall preamp modeled after a B-15N tonestack. In addition to its tonestack the Alex-1 can also double as a really nice FET boost since there’s a huge amount of gain on tap. Enough to smack the front end of an amp silly if you don’t exercise a little restraint.

I even got to pick the enclosure, colors, layout, and knobs. Doesn’t get any better than that.

It is pretty sweet. But the Linden gets a lot of it, although with the contour and input toggles it takes things in a different direction. And as a result it has a different voicing than the Alex-1 which is pure unadulterated bax.

My goal with the Broughton was to get the fundamental sound of a B-15N, but in a device I could plug directly into a power amp or board. Basically what I wanted was to cobble together a 300W B-15N. :woot:

Comparing the Alex-1 and Linden against my ‘69 B-15N I’d have to say the Broughton is a tiny but closer in vibe to the real deal than the Linden if you do a careful A/B comparison. But when actually playing (especially in ensemble), the Ampeg, Linden, and Alex-1 are, for all intents and purposes, equal. So if you’re contemplating a Linden you can buy one with confidence. The price is certainly right. And it’ll get you that cool fliptop vibe no problem. You betcha! :thumbsup:

Awesome! Thanks for the info! I've been curious as to how the Linden compares to other Bax style EQ's. That's such a tempting avenue to explore, but I'm already eyeing so many compressors and synths...better fight the GAS pains and just stick with the Linden cause it's doing such an amazing job as an always on EQ. If it ain't broke....:bassist:

I’ll keep you in mind. But don’t get your hopes up too much. It’s a core piece of my gear. :laugh:

I’d probably own a lot more Broughton boxes than I currently do. But the “door rush” ordering model is more of a challenge for me than I have the energy to invest these days. I got shut out of getting an order in on the SV Pre and Silver Deluxe more than a few times each. So I’ve kinda put Broughton acquisitions on temporary hold and moved onto other items on my “to buy” list for the time being - like the Analogman King of Tone and Dry Bell Unit 67 both of which I just ordered.

So little time and money. So many things to buy. ;)

You got it. I mostly run mine straight into the effects return on my SM-400 feeding a Goliath II 2x10 cab. Since that’s a fairly hifi sounding rig, it gets a lot of sonic character from the Linden. So it nails that fliptop sound remarkably well despite being all solid-state IMO. And when you cut in the various contour and input switch options you can get a lot more useable variations than you would with a straight fliptop style pre.

What can I say other than it works for me?

It's been a while since I played through my Linden, so I spent some time with it during the weekend. I noticed that mine is really noisy when using a classic 9v 1-Spot power supply. I didn't test it with my Cioks power supply yet, but I didn't remember all that noise. Anyone experienced the same thing?

Using the Linden together withbthe Sv-pre is amazing... The Linden has that ampegish voice. It just talks Ampeg. The Sv-pre punches you with power and screams SVT! Together they are awesome. I feel like the L shapes it so well, when it hits the Sv your ready to cook with fire.

I regularly run mine either with a 1-spot or BOSS PSA-120. No noise heard with either. It’s dead quiet.

Saved by the Linden. Couldn’t get home to grab my amp before rehearsal the other night. I booked the rehearsal studio’s hire amp and turned up to find a 180w Behringer 1x15 combo waiting for me. What a really really horrible sounding amp.
But a few tweaks of the Linden and somehow I pulled a very nice sound out of it. What a pedal :hyper:
For no particular reason here are the settings (Jazz bass with flats and foam mute). Tried going straight into the effects return but Linden didn’t have enough output. I ran through the amp’s pre-amp section with master cranked and gain set fairly low.

Kinda reviving an older thread here but really haven't seen a direct answer to the question " Which " Linden " version do you prefer ? " for those that have tried both . I can see the obvious " battery versus no battery " distinction and I understand that choice is subjective but fairly direct . The addition of the second toggle switch appears to be the main difference between the old and new . Is it worth it to go for the new version solely for that capability ? Thanks , Kelly

Hmmm...he pronounces "Baxandall" as "bax-AN-dul," and I always thought it was "BAX-an-dull." I think we need a judgment call on that one...you're European. "Baxandall" sounds like a European name. What do you think?

I've always pronounced it the same as you, but English is not my first language. I googled it, and it seems to be different American and British pronunciations. Peter Baxandall was British, and I can easily imagine Brits pronouncing it like David did there, it just fits better with their cadence.

I believe he mispronounced it, as if it was a some techncial word and not Peter Baxandall's last name. I've never heard an engineer pronounce Baxandall the way he did he in the video.
