Tom just got back to me with a very (very!) competitive/affordable price. So a 17-33-6 headless, passive should will definitely be in my budget.

To answer a previous question I had -- he does not use/recommend neck reinforcements.

All of us here will tell you how special his basses are. I understand your desire—the need—to have the beauty come along with the sound and playability…because after all, you live a few miles away from the a stunningly beautiful place (Sedona).

Very cool! I did not know that about you. So I hope the summers you spent here were more in Sedona and Flagstaff than Phoenix (where it is brutally hot).

Such a lovely town. But some of the highest priced real estate and rentals in AZ (because so much of the surrounding land is State or Federal Land.

How do you like the tone? Fretless Clements can be amazing…how is the “Mwaah” factor?

Fretless “Clems” always seem to be able to very quickly respond to different techniques and produce a wide range of subtle tone differences.

And that bridge…so cool.

I'm still getting to know it. The bass came strung with Labella Copper White Nylon strings, which I am not familiar with at all. That makes it a little hard for me to judge.

I always run rounds on my fretless basses and tend to bump up the mids. I'm not hearing a ton of midrange presence right now, but I'll throw on some DR Sunbeams and see how she "really" sounds.

First impressions are very woody, natural tone similar to my old Ibanez GWB-1 bass. Well balanced across the frequency spectrum. No dead spots or anything. Very easy to play. Still getting used to the piezo, which is a lot more bass-heavy and full-bodied than I was expecting.

It's volume, pickup blend, and tone. I need to play around with the preamp because the piezo is a LOT louder than the magnetic pickup. There should be trim pots in there to balance things out a bit.

Fretless basses built by @tjclem are typically better than basses worth 2-3x the price. The responsiveness of the fingerboard and playability of the neck is always top notch on any fretless you get from him. I've had him build a number of fretless basses for me and as I got better at figuring out what I wanted they've been harder and harder to let go of.

Spending time studying with Gary Willis will make one extremely particular about what they want in a fretless, but whenever I approached Tom to get a bass made for what I was considering, I never had to worry that all the fundamentals would be delivered at a level of quality that is quite unbelievable given the prices!
