Update on my post above regarding my new AC5 and volume and hum:

First of all, all irregular hum is gone. There was some anomaly in my house system.

I emailed George and now I know how this bass really works.

What an amazing bass !!!

Hi Stephen

Yes my basses are lower output than most other modern basses. They have similar output to a Fender passive bass. If you turn all the preamp EQs to full it should be about the same as other basses.
Your basses may have low impedance pickups, which have substantially less or negligible noise.
The single coil mode is louder than the hum-cancelling.
The push-pull pot on the passive tone engages the preamp EQ controls.
Increasing the treble, either preamp EQ or passive tone, will accentuate the magnetic noise.

You will get some magnetic noise as there is a lot of magnetic wire and magnet material in the pickup. It will decrease or disappear if you spin slowly and find a “quiet” spot and/or move away from your amp (or other sources of magnetic interference)

Generally at lower volumes your noise will be less. Use the hum-cancelling mode for less noise. For unbearable noise , use the piezo only; it should be dead quiet. Use the EQ to enhance the tone of the piezos. If you find the piezo harsh, turn back the piezo volume to about ¾.

That was an interesting post from George, not for what he said, but for what he did not say. The things George talked about are very well known to most, if not all of us, and consistent with the answers we have been giving.

o The bass is louder in single coil mode

o The bass is nosier (obviously) in single coil mode than hum cancelling mode.

o The preamp is meant to be used, so a fully boosted Fbass is comparable in volume to other active basses set flat. In my opinion, this helps the Fbass keep its organic tone with the preamp engaged.

o The additional wire makes BN style pickups more sensitive to building wiring, which is another way of saying in some buildings, the pickups are noisier.

o There are buildings where my Fs are silent, and buildings where they are noisier.

o Dialing up the tone control for more highs will give you more noise, whether in passive or active mode.

o When experiencing noise, slowly turning 360 while the bass is plugged in will help you find 2 directions you can face to be more noiseless.

o Engaging the preamp allows you to boost highs, which will make the bass noisier.

However, you wrote, "... there is a noticeable hum when the passive master tone is engaged. [not talking about having the pup in single coil mode]. "

George talked about all the instances where the bass would be noisier, but putting the bass in passive mode wasn't on the list.

Quick Question for ya Couzin~!

as you are the only FBass member that I can remember that has an AC6 with a Hipshot A bridge...by chance do you know the length of the string from end of ball (absolute end) to Nut (tuner side) Im looking for the measurement as you would string through body only.

Hi Tom,

Totally new to the club !! All new information to me. Updated my posts to say that all " irregular " hum is gone. Was an anomaly with my system. Tone control no longer produces any hum !!! Thanks !!!

I can measure if you want, but I use standard Fbass strings with it always and they string through the body just fine, with some to cut off at the end.

I have considered trying other strings, however the action on this neck through is so low, it is actually hard to touch off a harmonic at the 5th fret without unintentionally fretting the string. If I change strings, I don't know what I will get.

Anyway, let me know and I'll pull a string off and measure it from ball to nut.

WOW! THAT didn't come out right!

Yikes!! I have an old red "99" BN5 and if I ever get another Fbass I think I would choose a finish very close to that! It appears to be a VJ model,pick guard or not? I had George put a clear one on mine,that old nitro he used chipped off pretty easily. Beautiful bass:hyper: Jim Edit: In the first pic it looks more brown than the second. Which one is more correct? Maybe a white balance issue with the camera being used.

I should have mentioned in this post that during the time of me selling my BN5 George answered all of my questions in a very speedy manner. Not only do I respect him for the great product he makes but how he conducts his business in the most professional manner!

Top photo is a AC5 Brownburst the other one is a VF5 transparent Redburst. You are right about the white balance of the camera. On other photos I received during the painting process, the red is reder. As for a pickguard, it will be white pearloid.

Hey Fbass guys, dont want to derail your conversation but i have a question.

Im getting into a BN6 in the near future. Can i replace the 19mm b-style hipshot bridge with an a-style bridge to bring the spacing to 18mm?

Are you having your BN6 built or are you buying it from someone? The best thing to do would be to email George directly, as he and his crew would give you the best answer to your question. George and his crew are the best when it comes to customer service and all the help they give us when we have questions....:)
