In principle you're not wrong. However, Albuquerque ain't Denver. The Front Range is a completely different place. For one, we don't have big clubs and theaters like the Denver Metro has. Second, we are basically an island, with the nearest "big" towns no closer than at least 4-5hr in any direction - there's very little opportunity for growth without touring here. Third, the only genre that comes close to generating that kind of response here is latin-based music. I've considered moving North as some of my friends are there (Greg Schochet of Howland Woffard and the High Beams, Katie Glassman, Coral Creek, FY5, etc), but it's the rest of the Front Range I can't deal with (too many people!).

I just don't see this happening in ABQ, and that's because I'm active in the scene here and I've seen many of these types of bands come and go in the blink of an eye.

I have nothing but respect for that CL ad and the band manager with a clear vision and unwilling to compromise.

The bands in my neighborhood who know what they want and stick to their guns are hands down the most popular and most booked/best paid bands in town. We have cover bands like that in the Denver Metro area selling out the big clubs and theaters at $10-$20 ticket prices.

Not your thing? Move along and find something you're comfortable with, it even says so in the ad. But it's kinda pointless to criticize people with high standards. Says a lot more about the critic than the guy who ran the ad.

I appreciate that, good point about the market. It does make a difference, but I still respect the guy for not letting that negatively influence or impact his standards. Who knows, a few bands pop up like the one he's trying to put together, the local scene could change a bit.

And yes, Denver Front Range is off the chain crowded now. It was a really nice place to live when I moved here 24 years ago. My wife and I will be leaving in a few years, and she's a CO native. Very sad about that, it is a beautiful place, but it's just overrun.

I'm not seeing what his standards actually are. I see a lot of insulting comments about various looks, but nothing to what look he actually is going for. He wants someone who can play to a click, and doesn't have certain looks. Your standards for giving respect a clearly lower than mine. He doesn't have high standards - he can't even articulate what he's looking for - not to mention coming off as one of the world's biggest d-bags.

So about 3-4 weeks ago I caused a big uproar on the forums when I posted about set-list conflicts with this band I was auditioning for (there really wasn't a band yet, just a singer looking for people). It was pretty split 50-50 with consensus on that particular subject. Anyways, every so often I like to check out what's going on in the musician section on craigslist and lo-and-behold that guy I turned down is still looking for people and my god I really did dodge a bullet. Ok. That pretty much ruled (his list of who he DOESN'T want). After I was done laughing I had to cut/paste and send it to my lil brother.

No kidding, I talked to this guy for about 1/2 an hour and he kept going on about how this band has no egos and he wanted "real" rockers for this project. I get that looks can play a part in a band but there's no reason why he had to be a jerk about it. Well TB wanted to see his side and here it is.

I got poopie once back in 1995 when I made the mistake of answering an ad for an Alice in Chains cover band. I could tell just by talking to the guy that he was a d-bag. So after I blew him off, he left a very nasty message on our answering machine threatening me. Of course my mom heard it (I was 23 yrs old and just got out of being in the Navy for 5 years so I was living at home). So I had to call the guy, leave HIM a voice mail telling him that when my father got home from work from the POLICE STATION - he doesn't like hearing poopy messages like that on our answering machine. And if I were him - I would just beat feet & disappear.
