I wouldn't call that a transgression. That's a perfectly valid technique if it gives you the sound you're looking for.


And let's peer several years into the future. You have your own band, you're all rich and famous, and you're known for your unique tone that you get from the way you use your fingernails. Wanna bet who'll be taking credit for teaching you?! :p

I'm not bothered by playing with a pick. I like the sharp attack most of the time (I like it when the "THUMP" hits you square in the chest) but there are times when I want something softer. So I'll keep working on finger-style too. I believe both have their places.

That's wild. The bass wouldn't be the same without the outfit.

I'm now going to stand back and watch the CWB goddesses fight over the boots.

Practice tonight got cancelled as our drummer is out of town visiting an old friend/bandmate of ours who is quite ill in hospital. Besides being an incredible guitar player he was a great bass player who was part of the early days of rock & roll, playing bass for Eddie Cochran, Jerry Lee Lewis, Hollywood Argyles and did a lot of studio work with the Beach Boys when they were first recording. Unfortunately a stint in SE Asia left him fighting some demons, sometimes he'd win, sometimes he didn't.

When I first met him he was playing guitar in a band I was asked to join on bass. We hit it off and he taught me a lot about playing bass. Not by showing me lines or theory (well some) but how to "feel" the groove, figure out what the song needs for bass and what to throw out. Thirty years and a lot of playing later, I feel I can finally say I've reached 10% of his ability.

Contrary to the opinions of many, there's nothing wrong with a pick. Use what makes the sound you like and you'll love what you're doing. Glad you're happy with what you did tonight!

Thanks Tat, I appreciate your kind thoughts.

There's 3 of us in my current band that were part of the band I played in with him. A few years ago I came across an old cassette we recorded live off the board at a bar we played. I was so engrossed in the music and the energy coming off the stage it took me a little bit to realize it was our band.

It really brought home to me how special making music is.

I've been fortunate enough to play with some very good musicians over the years, this man ranks right at the very top of them all.

I had a good day. An elderly friend of mine whom I worked with many years ago lives less than a block from me. He is on a walker now. I took him to the bank, to get a haircut, lunch and then grocery shopping. We spent most of the day hanging out and he has a wicked sense of humor. So... it's all good.
