I’ve got photos of 2 4 way rotary switches here. I believ one is the standard 3x and the other the d bird switch. Hence the “3x” and the “dB”. Can someone confirm that the dB means d bird switch vs the 3x?

Yes, you are correct. The one marked "3X" is the "standard" 4-way switch for basses with three pickups like your Z3, and the one marked "DB" is the "D-Bird" switch, which is the one that gives you all three pickups combined in position 4.

Just a headsup that there's a member on the Basschat forum selling an ABI 4 string for silly cheap (£800). Lots of dings and finish chips, for that price is absolutely bonkers. I wish I had the means to get it for myself now. I dunno if linking to a sale on another forum is allowed, but I'll gladly PM anyone the link if they want, though I'm not sure if the seller would be comfortable shipping to America (though I'd be happy to help arrange that, but I'm only in the UK until September 1).

I played a very high-end brand x 5 string this weekend. 35" single scale. The B string is not quite as punchy as a long scale Dingwall (obviously) but very good nevertheless. But what brings me back to my Z3 besides the best B string on the planet is the even string tension and superior tone due to the multiscale. This is especially apparent on the G string of a 35" single scale. Too much tension and less musical sounding than a 34" G.

Very interesting! What type of strings and what gauge did you have on there? Can you elaborate a little in concrete terms on what you mean by less musical?

If you mean what kind of pickups are they, a sure way to find out is to look at the underside of them.

The default for new basses is FDV pickups with rounded shells. So that is likely what you have in the four banger. Don't know what to tell you about the fiver. Is it possible that it is New Old Stock, and was sitting around for awhile? If so, they are probably FD3s.
