I have a Combustion and a D-bird Standard but the pickup selector options are different (3x in my combustion so no all on, no solo middle) and I have a P-tone in the neck of the Combustion. So do they sound alike, well sort of. They do a bit but not really apples to apples, an NG3 should be much closer to the d-bird.

I've had a bit of time with the D-Bird now, the middle pickup soloed sounds a lot like a P bass to me, that and the bridge/middle parallel are great. The bridge on mine is also wired series when soloed I think (I had a quick look but not a full investigation) which makes it quite a useful setting, the sound is very balanced between the first 3 selections. The bridge actually works really well on it's own unlike every other Dingwall I've owned when it's been a bit weedy.

My Combustion is darker sounding than the D-Bird in all settings except for the 'all on' setting on the D-Bird and the bridge solo. But it's a different wood, different pickup settings and a different pickup so hardly a fair comparison.

The 'all on' setting on the D-bird sounds pretty dark to me, I personally find it way too much and won't ever use it. Others seem to love it so YMMV.

I did a few measurements for you, the pickups are a fair bit closer to the bridge on the combustion.

Let's not forget the tonal qualities of the different fingerboard woods, body woods, and even the shape of the body has been known to play a role in tone.

several have replied about the switch differences. is it the position 4 that's different?

@EMoneySC2 I have been using 2 Greenboy Fearless F112s exclusively for 4 years now. No GAS for anything else. I used to have Jule's preamp, but now I'm using a Noble tube preamp on my pedal board, which I also love.

I'm super stoked that I ordered the D-Bird switch in my upcoming ABZs! I've been playing with this NG-3 for a few hours and the "all pickups on" is just MASSIVE sounding! Even in passive mode, it sounds huge and full, but, I can see where it might be a bit dark sounding to some in passive mode. I think that's probably due to the NG/Combustion not having a passive tone control. I think the "all on" setting on the D-Bird will be fine...

Yup. I remember that one from the old Dingwall website forum. I was very tempted a few years back to strike a deal with the fellow. IIRC he wasn’t completely sure about selling back then. Guess it’s official now....

Yes, love the d-bird rotary, it's massive
(My Z3 has d-bird rotary as well

haha, the wallpaper... wish i could just remove/replace it with something plain for better visual but it's also childhood memories so... the struggle is real xD
