Dingwall Owners Club

Just placed the order for a Ferrari Yellow AB1 with Jason at Fretnation. If all goes as planned, it’ll have maple neck with maple fingerboard, the D-Roc rotary along with 3 three-way toggle switches (off/series/parallel) hooked to FD3-FDV-SF2 pickups (bridge to neck). Oh, also requested it be setup to F# standard. It’s going to be a really long winter for me this year waiting while it’s built and the electronics are updated to spec.

Here is a recent review from Dan Veall on an SPJ4 with the same woods and pickups as the one you're considering. Might not be much to go on as it's a lot of talking and Dan uses a super modern sound.

This bass looks so amazing!!!

So… last week i was in a thread saying - buy a fender if you want a “fender type bass”. and kind of thinking people were crazy to do otherwise, especially when prices higher than premium fenders are involved.

And then i was introduced to dingwall. I might need to order a j or p style 4 string now.

Design a 4003 style bass and i am done for.

I mean, it's not unreasonable. If you need something that sounds and/or looks like a Fender, Fenders can usually pull it off. Even MIJ/MIM can be great workhorses.

But yeah, if I could afford a Super or two, I would probably retire my actual Fenders.

Go listen to all the songs @IvanBassist has posted in here and his YouTube channel with his Super P. Gorgeous P tones all over.

The original post was about vintage fender remakes… my view was “if you are going to go as far to recreate it to the exact millimetre, the type of paint, and such… why not get the logo and headstock correct also?”

but my brain has been digesting the dingwalls this week and that ferrari green and matt black super j just have me throwing my old mindset out the window. I went from wanting a combustion 5er… to now wanting to get a super j four instead of a 60’s fender reissue.

I have a stupid question (shocker). When looking at the various control layouts for D-Roc, Combustion and NG3 what does the CW and CCW designation stand for? Before the jokes start I’m assuming it’s not Country/Western and Classic Country/Western .

Duh
Thanks!
Turns out there really is such a thing as a stupid question.
Nah, not stupid. Acronyms are great, when you're part of the "in" crowd that knows them. Being a software engineer, so many acronyms are tossed around constantly... even multiple meanings of the same acronym, so you have to not only know multiple meanings of them, but, you have to be able to place them contextually. It's actually kind of annoying when working between teams and with customers, sometimes.
But, now you know :)

FWIW, I don’t get too much ROI out of TLAs or FLAs anymore. And as an IT person myself, I do get the most value out of REST services (SOA in general) ever since SOAP opened up people’s acceptance to loosely coupled software, CQRS, etc. Creating APIs has become a full time job now requiring more FTEs to ensure the LOE is met, and support no longer struggles with MTTR. Know what I mean?

Sadly, I do...

Thanks for the kind words!

If there is one thing i am hearing… these bases all sound fantastic when the pickups are in series.
I added a bridge pickup to my super P build just in case I need the tone of both pick ups either in series or parallel.
However, I'm mostly using the P-pickup on its own so far, because it just sits too good in the mix.
It's nice to have the options there, but I could definitely live with only the P :)

Now, on my older SJ with slim pickups shells I do like and use the series mode more often. It gives you a more punchier sound.

@BurningSkies thanks for @-ing me!

@NickBassCentral - I can't believe that I still haven't ever been to Bass Central and I have been 2 hours away or less, for most of my life. I will rectify that and reach out prior. As to me looking right now, I know if I go import, I will go nuts until I have a Canadian one because I have bitten that apple and it is SO TASTY. The import basses are awesome no doubt but that doesn't matter to my irrational brain :)

We're the #1 dealer in the nation when it comes to Dingwall basses. We quite literally have hundreds of Dingwalls in stock that you can come get your hands on. We also do orders on Canadian models as well! I've been able to lay my eyes on ONE Canadian Dingwall during the QC process, and I have to say, it was unparalleled in quality and aesthetics! Feel free to stop by whenever you feel like it, we'll be here!

Thanks

Like I said, if the screw is digging into the wood properly, that wouldn't happen. Some strap buttons come with machine screws instead of wood screws. Sometimes the hole was just drilled too wide to begin with. Sometimes, the strap button will get turned by the strap, thus turning the screw. As a tech, I'm sure you know the quick and dirty repair for a stripped strap-button hole (toothpick and glue). What I was I referring to was improbability of the screw itself breaking.

Yes, good point about the type of screw used, the diameter of the hole, etc.. It likely also depends on how hard the wood is to begin with (well, that's my suspicion anyway). Yes, I'm aware of the fix for a stripped strap-button hole. This was my first time acting as a bass tech (though I've done it for 30+ years for myself!). I ended up popping the screw back in and duct-taping the upper-horn for their 2nd show. I know that sounds crazy but this was an incredibly important show for them and the tape came right off afterwards and didn't leave any residue (the audience hadn't even stopped clapping and I was already removing the tape!).

My bad for not catching the part of your post about screws breaking. I have heard of that occurring in the wild, though I've never encountered it myself and I agree that it's very unlikely to happen.
