I buried a truckload of lemons at the side of my house a few years ago, then built a garage on top of them.

Batting around an idea, but still not sure what to do. I'm thinking of converting my Sklar Sig from 2 pickups to 3. I contacted MO's shop, and the upgrade is doable. The cost of the pickup from Fret Nation and the install work is not cost prohibitive, but one thing has me concerned. The routing even when professionally done, will be slightly different than the original. Since the body is finished, there is no way to add the radius edges on the route. While not a deal breaker, I still am not sure about changing the original look, though having the option of the "J" style (B & N in parallel) or all three pickups together is intriguing. Here is an example of the same mod Mo did and it looks pretty darn good.
I've wrestled (at times) with the same thought, but knowing the "factory configuration" is not reversible, I decided not to do it.
But converting my NG2 to 3X was a super easy decision, the modification is invisible and reversible.
I know exactly what you mean, the original does look pretty sweet.

If at all possible, leaving the Z2 as is and picking out a Z3 is the most logical direction.

Have you priced out the cost of adding a pickup vs just selling the 2x and buying a 3x?

So, if anyone knows of, or is contemplating selling a Super 4, let me know. 4xx is fine, Super P or J ot PJ is also fine. I'm not sure I'll still be gigging by the time import Supers are ever made...
Lol I didn't even notice it. I couldn't wait to plug it back in and go ape poopie for a bit. Anyone with a DROC standard looking for a little more from it really should consider an Audere Classic. You'll get A LOT more from it. Hearing it again makes me less inclined to order FDVs for it. Now that I've had the Dbird custom I can certainly hear the difference in voicings and the FDVs I think are a little more full in the low mids and these with the extra boost seem more raw and aggressive.
The price of a new Sklar is 6-ish plus the 1-2 year wait. I won't even come close to that by selling and upgrading. Also, while another bass I'm sure will be fine, it isn't this one. Once I picked this one up, I stopped looking, as in forever. I sold everything including what I considered the best instrument I had ever laid my hands on, and only kept the Dingwall and a fairly inexpensive spare. I'll keep this one until I no longer have the ability to play or leave this world for good. At first I did not care for the color, but over time the uniqueness grew on me. I also found out, at least by when I inquired, there were only two made in that finish. More than likely there are now more, but it also added to my fondness for it.

When I converted my 4-string Z2 to a Z3, it was an easy choice - the neck pickup is what I use 75% of the time.
In fact, the only reason I parted with my 5-string Z2 was because my Afterburner (with a neck pickup) was getting all my play time.
I suspect you'd be closer than you think on the price given the used prices, but obviously a non starter with this bass. I personally prefer 2x to 3x so I'd keep it as is but I'm a 'set it an forget it' type. I don't wanna be changing the sound very often and more options just means i stand there fiddling with the settings rather than just play.
(This is tangentially relevant to the discussion of adding a 3rd pickup to a Sklar signature)
I have a pair of Nordstrand Big Blades delivering tomorrow to replace the 2 original Bartolini pickups.
Those Bartolini's never held a candle to the P-Tone at the neck, and I got tired of minimizing the P-Tone just to make the Bartolini's work.
When I finally decided to replace the Bartolinis, I said "to heck with balance" and raised the P-Tone closer to the strings. I was rewarded with hearing the P-Tone come alive; tons of grit, thickness and attitude!
Before I did that, my beater P-Bass could easily outmuscle my Z3 (which annoyed me to no end).
But once I got the P-Tone closer to the strings, the Z was just a beast.
For me, despite the fantastic playability and balance, that bass wouldn't be a keeper without the neck pickup.
I do have a P-Tone in my Z3 as well. It does a surprisingly good job at making the Z3 sound like a P-Bass with a modern touch.

I would do it. Mo does incredible work, and looking at it no-one is going to notice that the middle pickup doesn't have radiused edges around it. If it is your forever bass, you don't have to worry about resale value, although I would argue having the third pickup professionally added would actually add value.
I have one of the NG-2s with the square pickups, and I wanted to add a third. I did the routing myself (and was very nervous while doing it lol) but it worked out great. I wouldn't recommend DIYing it unless you have experience with woodworking tools and luthiery though.
